    Notes: A detailed systematic study on the growth morphology of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on Si in atmospheric pressure thermal chemical vapor deposition was undertaken. The role of NH3 for vertical alignment of CNTs was investigated. The direct cause for the alignment was a dense distribution of the catalytic metal particles, but that the particles are maintained catalytically active under amorphous carbon deposits was established by NH3. It allows a dense nucleation of the CNTs, and consequently, assists vertical alignment through entanglement and mechanical leaning among the tubes. The CNTs grew in a base growth mode. Since Ni is consumed both by silicide reaction and by capture into the growing tube, the growth stops when Ni is totally depleted. It occurs earlier for smaller particles, and thus a long time of growth results in a thin bottom with poor adhesion. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Effects of the Cr75Ti25/CoTi bilayer on the magnetic and crystallographic properties in CoCrPt longitudinal recording media were investigated. CoCrPt(30 nm)/Cr75Ti25(X nm)/CoTi(50 nm) films were deposited on glass substrates heated at 250 °C by a dc magnetron sputtering method. Coercivity increased from 2200 to 3200 Oe by incorporating a 50 nm thick Cr75Ti25 intermediate layer between the CoCrPt magnetic layer and the CoTi underlayer. From x-ray analyses, the rather strong Co(101¯0) diffraction was developed in addition to Co(112¯0) diffraction in CoCrPt/Cr75Ti25/CoTi films, while only Co(112¯0) diffraction was observed in CoCrPt/CoTi films. Transmission electron microscopy image confirmed that the small grain size of 18 nm in both types of films. This enhancement of the coercivity can be attributed to the increase of magnetic decoupling effect through the Cr segregation at the grain boundaries of the magnetic layer. In addition, the presence of the Co(101¯0) plane, and small grain size due to the B2 structure intermetallic compound underlayer should influence the magnetic properties of CoCrPt/Cr75Ti25/CoTi films. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: mRNA expression of urokinase and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 in human crescentic glomerulonephritis Aims: Weak staining for urokinase-plasminogen activator (uPA), tissue type plasminogen activator (tPA), or plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) confined to crescents has been described in a few cases of severe crescentic glomerulonephritis. We evaluated the molecular mechanism by which these proteins are increased or induced within crescents. Methods and results: We examined uPA, tPA and PAI-1 mRNA expression in 12 renal biopsies with crescentic glomerulonephritis, and in six control renal biopsies with no detectable abnormalities by RNA in-situ hybridization. The expressions of uPA, tPA and PAI-1 proteins were also assessed by immunofluorescence. To better determine the cellular origin of uPA and PAI-1 transcripts, CD68 protein was studied by immunohistochemistry on the same sections on which in-situ hybridization had been performed. In controls, there were very low level signals of uPA and PAI-1 mRNAs in a few glomerular epithelial cells (GECs). Specific signals of uPA and PAI-1 mRNAs were detected in the cells forming crescents in all the cases with crescentic glomerulonephritis. However, weak expression of mRNA for tPA was detected in two cases only. Immunostaining for uPA and PAI-1 was positive in some but not all, cases of crescentic glomerulonephritis. A double-labelling study showed that the signal for PAI-1 and uPA mRNAs was mainly in CD68− cells. Conclusions: Local accumulation of uPA or PAI-1 in crescents is associated with enhanced mRNA expression of these proteins. The up-regulation of PAI-1 mRNA by GECs, in particular, could play a major role in the formation of persistent fibrin deposits and progression of the lesions in crescents. Whether up-regulation of uPA is an epiphenomenon or plays a pathogenic role in the formation of crescents remains to be clarified.

    Notes: Abstract  While it is a clean alternative to conventional machining using environmentally polluting cutting oils and emulsions, cryogenic machining using liquid nitrogen has been reported to increase cutting forces and shorten tool life when cutting AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel. This paper presents improved results by using an economical cryogenic cooling approach designed after studying the cryogenic properties of the stainless steel material. By injecting a small amount of liquid nitrogen to the chip–tool interface, but not to the workpiece, this approach yielded a 67% tool-life improvement at 3.82 m/s and a 43% improvement at the medium speed of 3.40 m/s when compared with conventional emulsion cooling. It improved machining productivity and reduced production cost. In this study, different cryogenic machining approaches were compared in the machining test using commercial carbide inserts. The results show the cooling approach is crucial in attaining the benefits of cryogenic machining in cutting stainless steel.

    Notes: Abstract The complete larval development of Euphausia pacifica in the Yellow Sea is described and the stages are compared with larvae of E. nana. Euphausiid larvae examined in the present study were collected at 30 stations in the Yellow Sea in 1989. During the stages of Calyptopis III to Furcilia II, E. pacifica larvae are smaller than E. nana larvae but they are larger from Furcilia III onward. There are geographical variations in body size of Calyptopis III among the southern California waters, the eastern Japan waters, the Japan Sea, and the Yellow Sea; body size is smallest in the Yellow Sea and Japan Sea, while it is largest in southern California waters and intermediate in eastern Japan waters. Segmentation of antennal endopods was observed in the 5″6 to 5″1 furcilia forms in the Yellow Sea population, suggesting that this characteristic is not as reliable for identification of furcilia stages as the pleopods and terminal telson spines. Thus, we propose here that there are six furcilia stages of E. pacifica, instead of the seven previously reported by Boden (1950).

    Notes: Abstract A recombinant strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, GAL-GO2, was developed to facilitate the production of extracellular glucose oxidase (GOD). The recombinant strain secreted 85% (8.7 U/ml) of the total GOD (10.3 U/ml) produced in shake flask culture. For further enhancement of GOD production, optimization of the speed of agitation and the rate of aeration in a stirred tank fermentor was carried out. Response surface methodology with appropriate statistical experimental design was employed for this purpose. The maximal level of extracellular GOD was achieved when the speed of agitation and the rate of aeration were 420 rpm and 0.25 vvm, respectively. The enzyme production was increased by 74% compared to the level obtained under unoptimized conditions.
