    Notes: Summary An expression is presented which relates the experimentally observed melting point depression in crystallizable, compatible polymer blends to changes in lamellar thickness and thermodynamic considerations. Considering a given crystallization temperature, this relationship suggests that one should observe a depressed blend melting point, despite an increase in lamellar thickness over the pure crystallizable material. Possible explanations for the melting point elevation observed in some compatible blends are discussed.

    Notes: Summary The flow of a fluid, containing a reactant, past a solid catalytic particle on which a reaction takes place is considered for large Péclet number. The concentration of the reactant is given by the diffusion boundary-layer equation, and this is solved in the case when the rate of reaction on the particle surface and the rate of diffusion of reactant onto the surface are of the same order of magnitude. For a spherical particle, a series solution for the concentration is found for the case of Stokes flow, and numerical solutions are found for Stokes flow and for flow at higher Reynolds numbers (up to Re=10). To examine the effect of particle shape, numerical solutions are found for prolate and oblate spheroids in Stokes flow.

    Notes: Abstract Three procedures, matrix matching, plasma optimisation and single-point standard-addition, have been evaluated to ascertain the best procedure for simultaneous multi-element analysis of industrial soils by ICP-AES with CCD detection. A standard reference material, CRM143 from the Bureau Communautaire de Réference (BCR), has been analysed for Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni and Pb using the three different matrix interference correction procedures. All three procedures give comparable results which are in good agreement with the BCR values, except for Cr. The single-point standard addition procedure was chosen, on the basis of economy and ease of implementation, to correct for matrix interferences in the determination of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sn and V in soil samples collected from an industrial site in England. Concentrations of some of the elements were found to vary greatly with sampling depth. For example, the concentration of Mn, determined using the atomic line at 279.920 nm, increased from 426 ± 3 μg/g at a depth of 18–28 cm to 5996 ± 144 μg/g at 60–85 cm.

    Notes: This paper reviews the basic theoretical approach to describing light scattering in filled materials with nearly matching refractive indices (Rayleigh-Gans-Debye Theory). The modifications necessary to handle high filler concentrations (interparticle interference and multiple scattering) are included empirically. The primary result of this analysis is an expression for the optical transmission of a polymer composite as a function of particle size, volume fraction, composite thickness, and refractive index difference between the components. The angular dependence of the scattering is included so that scattered light which falls within the aperture of the transmission detector can be accounted for, Particular attention is given to including the temperature dependence of the refractive index and the effect of fillers on the thermal expansion properties of the polymer matrix in order to predict the temperature range over which the composite will be optically useful. Similarity to analyses of the Christiansen filter is discussed.
