    Notizen: Video detection experiments from 0.7 to 30 THz and mixing experiments at 30 THz have been performed with GaAs Schottky-barrier diodes and W-Ni metal-insulator-metal (MIM) diodes. Above approximately 12 THz the MIM diode is the more sensitive video detector (a factor of 5–10 at 30 THz). Difference frequencies up to 34 GHz were generated by mixing the radiation of two adjacent CO2 laser lines and a microwave source in a Schottky-barrier diode. The dependence of the mixing signal on different diode parameters (doping density, plasma frequency, cutoff frequency) and on bias current was measured. Compared with MIM diodes at 30 THz the Schottky-barrier diodes are less efficient for mixing (a factor of 104). The results suggest that thermionic emission is the dominant physical mechanism responsible for video detection and mixing at 30 THz.

    Notizen: A laser magnetic resonance spectrometer for the far-infrared region is described. It is based on an optically pumped far-infrared laser. Zeeman tuning of the energy levels of the investigated molecule is achieved by using permanent magnets. With this setup it is possible to reach a magnetic flux density as high as 0.5 T. The design of the spectrometer is very compact compared to conventional laser magnetic resonance spectrometers based on superconducting or watercooled electromagnets. This makes it a promising tool for analytic purposes either in the laboratory or for field studies. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A mechanism for the generation of population inversion and far-infrared emission in Si with shallow donors is investigated. By optically pumping a phosphorus doped Si crystal with a CO2 laser it was possible to achieve population inversion between the metastable 2p0 state and the 1s(E) and 1s(T) states. Spontaneous emission from these transitions was detected. Frequency measurements of this emission are in agreement with the expected transition frequency. Absorption measurements with a far-infrared probe laser confirm the existence of population inversion between the 2p0 state and the 1s(E) and 1s(T) states. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The dependence on temperature of the Schottky barrier height of Pt on n-GaAs is reported. Two different behaviors are observed. The Schottky contacts of one group have a mean barrier height of 1.018 eV and a temperature coefficient of −0.23 meV/K while the contacts of the other group have a significantly lower barrier height of 0.922 eV which is almost independent of the temperature. These results are interpreted on the basis of recent models of Fermi level pinning. While the Fermi level in the diodes of the first group is pinned to a charge neutrality level, it is pinned by defects in the diodes of the second group. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

The absorption kinetic of59Fe-(FeCl3) and60Co-(CoCl2) 10 min after administration of increasing doses (0.5–1,000 nmoles metal) into tied-off duodenal segments of normal and iron-deficient rats shows saturation characteristic for both metals; in iron-deficient rats the absorption of both metals was enhanced. 2. The addition of increasing amounts of cobalt to the59Fe-containing test solutions caused a decrease of the absorption of iron. 3. The study of the time dependence of this interaction in iron-deficient rats revealed, that cobalt inhibits the release of iron from mucosal cells into the blood, whereas the uptake of iron from the lumen into the mucosal cells did not differ from the controls without administration of cobalt. 4. The subcellular distribution of59Fe and60Co in mucosal cell homogenates of iron-deficient rats after ultracentrifugation on a polyvinylpyrrolidone-CsCl solution shows a similar pattern for both metals; in the presence of cobalt the subcellular distribution of59Fe is not changed. 5. From these results the conclusion is drawn that cobalt inhibits iron absorption not by an interference with iron binding sites on or in the luminal membranes of the mucosal cells but by an interaction with the releasing process at the contraluminal side.
    Notizen: Zusammenfassung 1. 10 min nach Verabfolgung steigender Dosen59Fe-(FeCl3) und60Co-(CoCl2) (0,5-1000 nMol Metall) in abgebundene Duodenumschlingen normaler und eisenarmer Ratten zeigt die Resorptionskinetik für beide Metalle Sättigungscharakteristik; bei eisenarmen Ratten war die Resorption beider Metalle gesteigert. 2. Zusätze von Kobalt zu den59Fe-haltigen Testlösungen hemmten die Eisenresorption. 3. Die Untersuchung des zeitlichen Verlaufes dieser Interaktion an eisenarmen Ratten machte deutlich, da\ Kobalt die Abgabe von Eisen an das Blut hemmt; die Eisenaufnahme aus dem Lumen in die Mucosazellen war hingegen nicht betroffen. 4. Die subzelluläre Verteilung von59Fe und60Co in Mucosazellhomogenaten eisenarmer Ratten zeigt nach Ultrazentrifugation auf einer Polyvinylpyrrolidon-CsCl-Lösung ein ähnliches Verteilungsmuster für beide Metalle; in Anwesenheit von Kobalt ist die subzelluläre Verteilung von59Fe nicht geändert. 5.     Notizen: Summary Iron absorption in the iron-deficient rat was compared with that in the normal rat to better understand the regulation of this dynamic process. It was found that: Iron uptake by the iron-deficient intestinal mucosa was prolonged as a result of slower gastric release, particularly when larger doses of iron were employed. The increased mucosal uptake of ionized iron was not the result of increased adsorption, but instead appeared related to a metabolically active uptake process, whereas the increased mucosal uptake of transferrin iron was associated with increased numbers of mucosal cell membrane transferrin receptors. Mucosal ferritin acted as an iron storage protein, but its iron uptake did not explain the lower iron absorption in the normal rat. Iron loading the mucosal cell (by presenting a large iron dose to the intestinal lumen) decreased absorption for 3 to 4 days. Iron loading of the mucosal cell from circulating plasma transferrin was proportionate to the plasma iron concentration. Mucosal iron content was the composite of iron loading from the lumen and loading from plasma transferrin versus release of iron into the body. These studies imply that an enhanced uptake-throughput mechanism causes the increased iron absorption in the iron-deficient rat. Results were consistent with the existence of a regulating mechanism for iron absorption that responds to change in mucosal cell iron, which is best reflected by mucosal ferritin.

    Notizen: Summary Body iron content and iron balance were studied in the spider (D. hentzi). 1. Total iron content of individual male and female spiders averaged 350 μg. 2. Food intake consisted of domestic crickets. Iron content of crickets averaged 12.4 μg/cricket of which 8.7 μg was absorbed by the spiders. The average number of crickets ingested during a period of six months was 14, amounting to 124 μg of iron absorbed. 3. Most of the iron was localized in the opisthosoma. In four female spiders a mean of 85% of the radioiron still present 13 to 15 months after ingestion was found there. 4. Iron excretion in urine and feces was 19.9 μg/month or 119 μg for a six month period. The excretion of radioiron followed in four females showed a halflife of six months. 5. Molts showed an average iron content of 41.3 μg. These large spiders may molt every year or at considerably longer intervals. If iron lost in the molt is added to other iron loss, it appears to exceed the estimated intake, but by a negligible fraction. 6. Cell free normal blood revealed that iron is present to the extent of 85 μg/100 ml and is bound to two proteins. Some of the properties of the proteins are reported. Saturation with radioiron showed that the blood could take up another 21 μg iron/100 ml.

    Notizen: Summary Manduca sexta larvae accumulate large amounts of iron during their larval feeding period. When59Fe was fed to 5th instar larvae, it was evenly distributed among the hemolymph, gut and carcass until the cessation of feeding. By pupation 95% of the labelled iron was found in the fat body. In the adult a significant portion of this iron was found in flight muscle. Studies of the hemolymph disclosed two ironcontaining proteins. The first was composed of a single polypeptide chain of 80 kD, containing one atom of iron. This protein bound ionic iron in vitro and was able to transfer this iron to ferritin when incubated with fat body in vitro. Therefore, it appeared to serve a transport function. The second protein had a molecular weight of 490 kD with subunits of 24 and 26 kD and contained 220 μg of iron/mg protein. Its chemical and ultrastructural characteristics were those of ferritin. These studies demonstrate the presence of both a transport protein and a unique circulating ferritin inManduca sexta, the latter serving a storage function during development and possibly also a transport function.
