Notes: Background Multiple population studies have shown the presence of a sibling effect on atopic disease. However, it is unclear if the sibling effect is also of importance in subjects who are genetically at high risk for the development of atopy. Objective To study the presence of a sibling effect on markers of atopy (serum total IgE, specific IgE, skin tests) and asthma (bronchial hyper-responsiveness to histamine) in families ascertained through a parent with asthma. Methods First-degree offspring in 200 asthma families were studied (n = 541). Mixed effects regression models were used to account for the dependence of the observations within a family, and to adjust for possible confounding variables. Results Multiple regression analysis showed that having older siblings was inversely related to atopy, defined as ≥ 2, ≥ 3, ≥ 4, or ≥ 5 skin tests (P = 0.07–0.009). In addition, family size (number of siblings) had a significant protective effect on the presence of specific IgE to common aeroallergens (P = 0.03). Exposure to cigarette smoke in the first 3 years of life significantly increased the risk of having specific IgE to common aeroallergens (P = 0.04). No sibling effect was detected for serum total IgE or bronchial hyper-responsiveness to histamine. Conclusions This study shows a protective sibling effect on the presence and severity of atopy but not on bronchial hyper-responsiveness in children who are genetically at risk. The identification of the sibling effect in high-risk families stresses the need to understand the basis of this effect, in order to design future prevention programmes.

Notes: Type VI collagen was immunolocalized in several soft connective tissues at the light and electron microscopic level. Positive labeling was found in all tissues examined, periodontal ligament, gingiva, mesenterium and periosteum. The labeled structures could be divided into 2 categories: microfibrils intermingling with collagen fibrils, and those that formed bundles (oxytalan fibres and elastin-associated microfibrils). Control sections incubated with antibody pre-absorbed to purified type VI collagen, or with non-immune antibody, proved to be negative. Our observations indicate that the structural organization of type VI collagen varies from small microfibrillar structures associated with the collagen and elastin fibre systems to highly ordered parallel arrays of oxytalan bundles.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary. A treatment protocol is demonstrated, consisting of an osteotomy, either proximal or distal, of the bone defect with subsequent segmental transport via an anteromedially (tibia) or laterally (femur) mounted AO external fixation over an unreamed interlocking nail (monorail system). Twenty patients were treated by this method with indications as follows: 13 had a segmental bone defect of the tibia, 3 of the femur. Three patients showed post-traumatic and postinfectious leg-length discrepancies and one was treated for hypertrophic non-union of the femur. Defect distance varied between 5 and 18.5 cm and average time for transport was 19,42 days/cm for the tibial shaft, 15,93 days/cm for the femur. Two patients developed deep infection, which required change of treatment, removing the monorail system and application of an Ilizarov apparatus. Despite complications using the monorail system, all patients healed and no amputations were required. The monorail system can be used as an alternative to the Ilizarov method under certain criteria of patient selection; these criteria are shown by an algorithm for segmental bone defects without infection, respecting the soft-tissue status with or without neurovascular compromise.

Notes: Abstract Geotomographic imaging is a technique which allows seismic waves to be used to gain information about the internal structure of rock masses, in a way conceptually similar to medical CAT scanning. Traditional approaches to the study of mining-induced seismic phenomena have concentrated on using passive monitoring methods. This paper gives an overview of the developments in the acquisition, processing and interpretation of geotomographic data and outlines how images can be used in conjunction with passive techniques to study mining-induced seismicity.

Notes: Abstract The progress made on three phases of a research project, started in 1986 to investigate mining induced seismicity/rockburst phenomena using concurrent geotomographic imaging and microseismic monitoring techniques, is described. Phase I is the geotomographic software development and laboratory calibration trials. Phase II is the enhancement of traditional microseismic monitoring instrumentation with a waveform acquisition system, so that source mechanism studies can be carried out on mining induced seismic events. Phase III is the field trials of the hybrid technique which will be used to monitor changing rock mass physical properties, in response to mining. Preliminary results from all three phases are given, together with an outline of current and future research planned.

Notes: Abstract The Currant Clearwing Moth is a serious pest of currant and other soft fruit shrubs in the Netherlands intensifying damages since conditions of cultivating have been changed about ten years ago. Studies were made on bionomy and chemical control of this pest. Bait traps proved to be useful for recording the flight as well the quota of females but not for controlling. In 1981 in glasshouses two maxima of flight took place: at 13. and 22. of May. Applying pyrethroids when larvae already live inside of brushes was uneffective. On the contrary the pyrethroids (Deltamethrin) showed best results when sprayed during the flight period ofS. tipuliformis.
