    Notes: The effect of the Ba/Ti ratio on microstructure, dielectric/ferroelectric properties, and domain width was studied using optical microscopy, ɛ(T) curves, D–E hysteresis, and transmission electron microscopy. Although Ti-excess samples showed abnormal grain growth and a decrease of room-temperature permittivity due to a liquid phase at grain boundaries, its ferroelectric properties were similar to those of stoichiometric BaTiO3 ceramics. However, in Ba-excess samples, an increase of permittivity and ferroelectric properties different from those of stoichiometry were found. Changes in domain width and ferroelectric transition behavior indicated that the variation of dielectric properties was related to the internal stress. It is proposed that this internal stress originated from differences in the thermal expansion coefficient between the matrix and the second phase.

    Notes: Low-temperature-sinterable (Zr0.8Sn0.2)TiO4 powders were prepared using 3 mol% Zn(NO3)2 additive and then compared with powders prepared using 3 mol% ZnO additive and no additives. Sintering at 1200°C for 2 h produced a dielectric ceramic with ρ= 98.6% of theoretical density (TD), ɛr= 38.4, Q×f (GHz) = 42000, and τf=−1 ppm/°C. Sintering at 1250°C resulted in an excellent dielectric with ρ= 99% of TD, epsilonr= 40.9, Q×f (GHz) = 49000, and τf=−2 ppm/°C. Scanning electron microscopy showed a microstructure with grains measuring 0.5 to 1 μm, and transmission electron microscopy revealed secondary phase in the grain boundaries.

    Notes: Polycrystalline BaTiO3 thin films with thickness ranging from 2100 to 20 000 Å were prepared on platinum substrates using off-axis radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. The variation in room temperature permittivity of the films was investigated with respect to thickness using x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. All films were ferroelectric and their room temperature permittivity, which was significantly higher than previously reported values, showed a strong dependence on film thickness. Higher permittivity was attributed primarily to the presence of ferroelectric domains. The room temperature permittivity of the thin films showed large variations with grain size, as in the case of BaTiO3 ceramics. The increase in permittivity with increasing film thickness was attributed to the decrease in defect concentration with grain growth. The 20 000 Å film showed an abrupt decrease in permittivity and the presence of an intergranular phase having titanium-excess composition; these phenomena are discussed in terms of domain boundary pinning and recrystallization. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A method is introduced to prepare almost-spherical submicrometer-sized α-alumina via surface modification of γ-alumina with an alumina sol. Milled γ-alumina, in the presence of 3 wt% of α-alumina with a median particle size (d50) of 0.32 μm (AKP-30), produced irregularly shaped α-alumina with d50∼0.3 μm after heat treatment at 1100°C for 1 h. γ-alumina that had been surface-modified by milling in the presence of 3 wt% of the alumina sol resulted in almost-monosized, spherical α-alumina ∼0.3 μm in size after heat treatment at 1100°C for 1 h. Furthermore, almost-spherical α-alumina 0.1—0.2 μm in size was obtained by milling γ-alumina with 3 wt% of AKP-30 alumina in the presence of 3 wt% of the alumina sol, followed by heat treatment at 1100°C for 1 h. The alumina sol that has been introduced in this work seems to act as a dispersant, in addition to helping to form a spherical shape.

    Notes: The effect of an external electric field on the grain-boundary migration in Al2O3 ceramics has been investigated. The boundary migration is dependent on the direction and magnitude of the applied bias, and the observed boundary migration behavior is attributed to the presence of an electrostatic potential that inherently forms at the grain boundaries of Al2O3 ceramics. The results give experimental evidence that the boundary phenomena in oxide ceramics are related to the grain-boundary potential.

    Notes: The diagnostic ability of the restriction fragment length dimorphism–polymerase chain reaction (RFLD–PCR) method was evaluated. Seven primer pairs, newly designed from 44 β-lactamase genes encoding extended-spectrum β-lactamases not related to TEM- and SHV-types, were used to differentiate OXA-2, FOX-3, CMY-3, IMP-1, and IMI-1 β-lactamases. The RFLD–PCR was carried out successfully, and these genes were differentiated by the sizes of their PCR products and by the difference in restriction fragment length when each amplicon was digested with a unique restriction enzyme. This discriminatory detection of the genes was confirmed by sequencing the PCR products.

    Notes: The effects of growth rate and nutrient feed rate on the production of actinorhodin (Act) and undecylprodigiosin (Red) were determined in Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) and in a congenic relA null-mutant known to be deficient in ppGpp synthesis and antibiotic production under conditions of nitrogen limitation. In the relA+ strain, Act production was inversely related to specific growth rate in continuous cultures limited by glucose, ammonium, or phosphate, while Red biosynthesis was optimal at 0.05 h−1 regardless of the specific nutrient limitation. Production of Act and Red in the relA mutant was lower than that of the parental strain, particularly under conditions of glucose- and ammonium-limitation, indicating an important and general role for ppGpp in determining the onset of the antibiotic biosynthesis under conditions of nutrient limitation. At constant growth rate, but with varying nutrient feed rates, the specific rate of Act production was adversely influenced by increasing levels of glucose, ammonium, and phosphate, with phosphate having the greatest inhibitory effect. Under the same conditions, the specific rate of Red production was stimulated by increasing glucose levels, but markedly decreased by increased levels of phosphate.

    Notes: Abstract Experiments in which bulk MoO3 has been diluted in silica or alumina reveal a “corrected” TPR pattern in which the bulk oxide reduces at the same temperature as the supported crystalline phase. The reduction patterns for diluted bulk MoO3, in conjunction with an XRD study of the reduction process and a recent comprehensive speciation theory have greatly assisted the assignment of peaks for silica and alumina supported samples. A simple interpretation of TPR patterns has been applied with good agreement to the body of MoO3 TPR literature. With consistent interpretation, temperature programmed reduction might be employed with increased confidence to characterize supported MoO3 and perhaps other supported oxides.

    Notes: The effect of chemical pretreatments on the electrochemical etching behavior ofaluminum was investigated with the topographic studies of surface and the analysis of initialpotential transients. Two-step pretreatments with H3PO4 and H2SiF6 result in a high density ofpre-etch pits on aluminum surface by the incorporation of phosphate ion inside the oxide film andthe removal of surface layer by aggressive fluorosilicic acid solution. It generates a high density ofetch pits during electrochemical etching and results in the capacitance increase of etched Alelectrode by expanding the surface area, up to 61.3 μF/cm2 with the pretreatment solution of 0.5MH3PO4 at 65℃ and 10 mM H2SiF6 at 45℃

    Notes: The bending moment test used by the specimens with partial and circumferential wallthinning was carried out to obtain the AE signal. The time-frequency analysis method for theinvestigation of the frequency characteristics of the AE signal was applied. The results of thewavelet analysis were compared with those of the bending moment test for the structural integrityof tube. The result of the frequency characteristics by applying wavelet analysis method anddropping ball test was presented similarly to those of bending moment test. It is considered that thissimple method with combination of dropping ball test and wavelet analysis is very useful schemefor investigating the structural integrity
