Notes: A formalism based on the superlattice crystal coordinate representation, which is valid for arbitrary well and barrier widths, is developed and applied to the Wannier exciton problem. A simple model for the electron-hole Coulomb interaction within the independent subband approximation permits nonvariational calculation of exciton binding energies, oscillator strengths, and optical absorption of both bound and continuum exciton states. The effects of growth axis directed electric and magnetic fields are emphasized. Numerical results for GaAs/ Ga1−xAlxAs and In1−xGaxAs/GaAs exciton binding energies and oscillator strengths as functions of well width, barrier width, and electric and magnetic field strengths show excellent agreement with experiment.

Notes: A variety of superlattices is predicted to exhibit high-speed carrier-activated light modulation. The proposal is based on the large, tunable, and very narrow absorption peak for transitions between the two lowest conduction subbands. The theory, which is demonstrated to be predictive, also suggests correspondingly large variations of the refractive index.

Notes: Novel features are predicted in the infrared absorption spectrum of an interacting electron gas in a parabolic quantum well with two characteristic curvatures (biparabolic quantum well). A series of well-defined absorption peaks appears below the frequency of the usual center-of-mass absorption. These subfundamental peaks correspond to modes of the coupled electron gas and light system, and lie beyond the usual treatment of light absorption within first-order perturbation theory.

Notes: We analyze resonant phenomena in finite quantum wells involving intersubband transitions from the ground state into the continuum spectrum. The momentum matrix element is shown to exhibit oscillatory behavior due to the presence of virtual levels. Estimates of the momentum matrix element based on the infinite quantum-well approximation are found to be inaccurate.

Notes: Abstract A two-part study was conducted in which post-mortem changes were investigated in the baboon outflow system. It was found that the meshwork cells closest to the chamber angle were particularly susceptible to post-mortem advance. Post-mortem vacuoles developed in the endothelium of Schlemm's canal and by light microscopy these structures could be mistaken for giant vacuoles. On the other hand it was shown by electron microscopy that the giant vacuoles which have been implicated in the transendothelial transfer of aqueous humour and post-mortem vacuoles were distinct and separate entities.

Notes: Summary Hyperplasia of endocrine cells in the lung of the adult rat exposed to asbestos has only been characterised so far by electron microscopy as there is a lack of reliable staining techniques for their demonstration at light microscopical level. Neuron specific enolase (NSE), an isoenzyme of the glycolytic enzyme enolase has recently been shown to be present in lung endocrine cells. In this study we reveal a marked endocrine cell hyperplasia at light microscopical level in the lungs of adult rats exposed to asbestos using antibodies to NSE. Very large groups of NSE-immunoreactive cells (20–80) were only observed in the lungs of rats exposed to asbestos for 12 months. In addition smaller groups of cells (2–10) known to be present normally and to decrease with age, were rarely noted in the controls but were frequently detected in the treated rats. Immunoreactive NSE is therefore a very good marker for endocrine cell hyperplasia and thus of early neoplastic changes.

Notes: Summary In the normal rabbit retina glycogen particles were only observed in the Müller cell. The glycogen was evenly distribution throughout the cytoplasm. The inner retina contained large amounts of Müller cell cytoplasm and consequently possessed substantial quantities of glycogen. The outer retina contained little Müller cell cytoplasm and only small amounts of Glycogen. Following total acute ischaemia induced by high intraocular pressure, the amount of glycogen in the retina fell rapidly so that by 45–60 min of ischaemia it was absent from the Müller cell. In the rabbit, ischaemia preferentially damaged the outer retina and especially the visual cells. This pattern of damage was thought to be a reflection of the amount of glycogen present in the different regions of the retina.

Notes: Summary The retinae of anaesthetised Dutch rabbits were exposed to light of various known intensities for a period of 1 h. After this period the animals were sacrificed and tissue taken for investigation by light and electron microscopy. Changes were apparent in the visual cells and retinal pigment epithelium only at the highest intensities employed. The retinal pigment epithelium and the outer nuclear layer exhibited mild oedematous changes. The major components to be affected were the visual cell outer segments. Marked disruption and vesiculation were features of the cone outer segments, which was in distinct contrast to the focal damage observed in the rod outer segments.
