Notes: Abstract The oral health of 402 12-year-old Black schoolchildren was studied. Dental caries was seen in 65.6%, but 58.2% had a DMFT of less than 6, while the mean DMFT was 2.3. Few teeth were missing or filled, the majority being decayed. No significant association was found between DMFT and sex, ethnic group or father's occupation. Periodontal disease was seen in 40.3% and malocclusions were rare, being present in only 11.1%.

Notes: Nitrous oxide concentrations (V/V) at the delivery Rotameters block, nasal mask, pharynx and venous blood, were compared. There was a dilution of approximately 50% of the delivered nitrous oxide at the nasal mask which was further reduced in the pharynx. Venous blood concentrations 10 minutes after inhalation of nitrous oxide were low but as would be calculated from pharyngeal concentrations. After 5 minutes of oxygenation venous blood nitrous oxide concentrations were still relatively high. A total of 92% of subjects experienced a satisfactory effect with 30% nitrous oxide or less in the pharynx.

Notes: Abstract This paper reports an examination of dental caries in the primary dentition of 2–5-yr-oId white children in an industrialized South African city, in 1981 and 1983. There was a decrease in dental caries prevalence over the 2-yr period accompanied by an increase in dental treatment in 3–5-yr-olds. Treatment, however, remains low. Socioeconomic status had a varying effect on the trends, but in general there was a greater reduction in dental caries in the lower socioeconomic areas.

Notes: Abstract— A clinical survey of 1466 children of typical South African communities showed a prevalence rate of primary tooth trauma of 15%. Trauma was least common at age 1–2 years (10.7%) and most common at 4–5 years (20.6%). The commonest trauma seen was fracture of enamel only (71.8%) followed by fracture of dentine (11.2%), tooth loss (8.2%) and discolouration without other sign of injury (5.6%).

Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the degree of fluorosis in the primary dentition and the accompanying caries patterns in groups of preschool-children in high and low fluoride areas. Among 331 coloured children, aged 1 -5 years, living in an area with water F concentrations ranging from 2.2 to 4.1 parts/106, 82% were caries free and the dmft values ranged from 0 to 15 with a mean dmft of 0.8 ± 2.1. Varying degrees of fluorosis in the primary teeth were present in 50.6% of the children. In 177 coloured children of similar ages from an adjacent area with 0.2 parts/106 F in the drinking water the dmft values ranged from 0 to 20 with a mean dmft of 5.4 ± 5.8. Only 28% of the children were caries free. None of the children in this area had fluorosis. The caries prevalence was significantly higher in the low fluoride area than in the high fluoride area. The degree of fluorosis found in the primary dentition in the children from the high fluoride area was higher than had been anticipated and was accompanied by a very low caries prevalence.

Notes: Abstract A new visible light-cured composite resin, Fotofil®, has been developed for the esthetic restoration of anterior teeth. The pulpal responses elicited by this material in unlined cavities and cavities lined with Dycal® were compared with those elicited by a negative control consisting of modified zinc oxide-eugenol cement Nobetec® and a silicate cement Syntrex®. The pulpal responses were evaluated in the permanent maxillary and mandibular incisors in vervet monkeys using labial Class V cavities prepared in a total of 240 teeth. Two teeth were filled with each material in each monkey. Groups of 10 monkeys were killed at intervals of 2 days, and 2 and 8 weeks after restoration of the teeth. The most severe pulpal responses were elicited by the unlined Fotofil® and Syntrex® restorations at all three time intervals. The Dycal® lined Fotofil® restorations elicited a milder pulp response than the Nobetec ® at 2 days and 2 weeks. No pulpal response was elicited by the latter two materials at 8 weeks. These results clearly showed that Fotofil® and Syntrex® are irritant to the dental pulp up to 8 weeks. The placement of a Dycal® liner beneath Fotofil® restorations reduced the pulpal irritation elicited by this material to levels which were lower than those elicited by the Nobetec® control at 2 days and 2 weeks.

Notes: A conventional low copper amalgam was placed in cavities with and without smear layer removol and the amlagam restorations were covered with a resin overlay. The restored teeth were retrieved at 2, 28 and 56 days postoperatively in order to test for leakage and then pulpal reactions. More inflammation was seen in the teeth from which the smear layer had been removed. Abscesses were present in 6 teeth at 28 days but only one was associated with demonstrable bacteria. This study does not support smear layer removal before insertion of low copper amalgam restorations.

Notes: The sample to be analysed, and a standard of known composition, were irradiated simultaneously in the poolside facility of a nuclear reactor for 130 hours in a thermal neutron flux of approximately 2×1013 n.cm−2. sec−1, and the induced radioactivity compared after a cooling period of four weeks. The investigation was done with a high resolution Ge(Li) detector coupled to a fully transistorized 4000 channel analyser. The concentration of five elements, namely Sb, Ag, Zn, Co and Fe, was determined in human dental calculus by instrumental activation analysis and found to be 0,68 ppm, 0,18 ppm, 174 ppm, 0,08 ppm and 54 ppm respectively.

Notes: Abstract. A new composite restorative material, Enamelite, has recently been introduced for the conservative treatment of cervical erosion and hypoplastic enamel surfaces. The pulpal response elided by the restorative material was investigated in teeth of the vervet monkey and compared to a modified zinc oxide-eugenol cement.Buccal or labial Class V cavities were prepared in 128 teeth in six vervet monkeys. The teeth in contralateral segments were restored with the restorative and control materials, respectively. The experimental animals were killed at 4, 14 and 42 days. The restorative and control materials exhibited about the same minimal degree of cellular displacement and inflammatory response at each of the three postoperative time intervals. The percentage of specimens with reparative dentin increased progressively with time. At all three intervals the restorative material elicited a greater response than the control zinc oxide-eugenol cement. The results suggest that the clinical application of the restorative material on cervical eroded or hypoplastic enamel surfaces without a protective lining is a safe procedure.

Notes: Abstract The investigation was undertaken to determine the response to Nobetec®, a modified zinc oxide-eugenol cement, widely used as a negative control material in pulpal studies, under conditions of high- and low-speed cavity preparation, with and without a cavity liner Dycal®. The pulpal responses were evaluated at intervals of 2 days, 2 weeks and 8 weeks in the permanent maxillary and mandibular incisors in 26 vervet monkeys using labial Class V cavities prepared in 208 teeth. Nobetec® was found to be more irritant to the dental pulp than Dycal® although this difference was not statistically significant and the degree of irritation was low. The pulpal irritation caused by high- and low-speed cavity preparation was similar and choice of speed should be a matter of personal preference.
