Notes: We have implemented interference imaging mode as well as Lorentz imaging mode on a scanning transmission electron microscope (HITACHI HF-2000 with a scanning option; 200 kV accelerating voltage). In the interference mode, a pair of mutually coherent fine probes scan simultaneously across the region of magnetic induction. By monitoring the relative phase change occurring in the probe pair, the variation of the magnetic flux bound by the probe trajectories can be sensed by the universal unit of e/h (−||e||: electron charge and h: Planck's constant). The combined use of this imaging mode with the Lorentz mode which is based on the detection of the probe deflection by Lorentz force facilitates detailed analyses of fringing field around magnetic materials and magnetic induction inside magnetic films. The microscope described above is particularly suited for the study of magnetic storage devices whose microscopic magnetic properties are drawing much attention recently. We show here the results of its application to the observation of field distributions near the MR (magnetoresistive) heads and induction distributions associated with high density longitudinal and perpendicular recording media. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new optical method is established to measure the crack length and its velocity in transparent crystals by utilizing the total reflection of light beam at the cleavage crack plane. The optical system is constructed by using a laser, a PIN photodiode sensor, and a wave memory. With the apparatus the crack propagation velocity can be measured at any desired position inside the specimen with a time resolution of less than 1 μs. The measurement on a cleavage crack in NaCl reveals that the maximum speed of the crack is about 800 m/s and the fluctuation of the velocity occurs prior to the arrest.

Notes: We fabricate semi-insulating InGaAs/GaAs multiple quantum wells and observe the excitonic enhancement of the photorefractivity in the Franz–Keldysh geometry at wavelengths of 0.92–0.94 μm. A maximum two-wave mixing gain of 138 cm−1 and a maximum diffraction efficiency of 1.5×10−4 are obtained. The saturation intensity and the spatial resolution are also measured by four-wave mixing. The diffraction efficiency is saturated at a high external electric field. The dominant cause of this saturation is the deviation of the excitonic electroabsorption from its quadratic law. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have studied the superconducting properties of Nd(Ba1−xNdx)2Cu3O7−δ (Nd123, x≈0.1) single crystals grown by the traveling-solvent floating-zone method under 0.1% O2 in Ar atmosphere. An anomalous peak effect in the magnetization hysteresis (M–B) loop is observed in the Nd123 single crystals as well as in the Nd123 bulk crystals prepared by the oxygen-controlled melt growth (OCMG) method. The critical current density (Jc) of the Nd123 single crystals is 70 600 A/cm2 in 1.0 T at 77 K for the applied field perpendicular to the a-b plane. Uniform flux density distribution with the same shape as the sample is observed in the field perpendicular to the a-b plane by the magneto-optical flux-density observation. Finely dispersed white regions in the dark-field image due to Nd substitutions for Ba are observed in the Nd123 matrix by the transmission electron microscopy. The high Jc value of the Nd123 single crystals in the applied field is explained by the field-induced pinning centers caused by the Nd–Ba substitutions in the Nd123 matrix. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetism of high-Tc superconductors is still the subject of intensive investigation. Zn substitution for Cu together with removal of oxygen suppresses the superconductivity quickly. We prepared two crystals to perform a neutron scattering study of the spin fluctuations of La2−xSrxCu1−yZnyO4−δ. One is a Zn-doped and deoxygenated crystal La1.86Sr0.14Cu0.988Zn0.012O4−δ (#1) which does not show superconductivity above 1.5 K. The other is a Zn-doped crystal La1.86Sr0.14Cu0.988Zn0.012O4 (#2) which shows superconductivity below 16 K. The incommensurate spin excitations observed previously in superconducting samples1,2 containing no Zn remain in both samples. However, there is significant difference in the spectral weight χ‘(q,ω) at low temperatures between the non-superconducting and superconducting Zn-doped crystals. In crystal #1 the spectral weight at low temperatures is qualitatively similar to that of Zn-undoped non-superconducting samples.3 In crystal #2 the spectral weight at low temperatures is qualitatively similar to that of Zn-undoped superconducting samples.1,2 These results demonstrate that there is an intimate relationship between the magnetism and the superconductivity. We are in the process of further measurements.

Notes: We have designed and constructed an improved two-dimensional X pendulum vibration–isolation table. It achieved a lower resonant frequency (7 s) than previous prototypes, and the effects of many parasitic elastic resonances have been reduced by careful balancing, leading to much improved vibration isolation around a few hertz. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Highly flat, clean, and stable surfaces of as-prepared Nd1Ba2Cu3Oy (Nd123) single crystals have been studied using an ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope/spectroscopy (UHV-STM/STS) system. The results of large area STM scans together with the results of STS measurements, magnetization loops measured at several temperatures below Tc, and critical current density measurements reveal the presence of a new magnetic flux pinning center in Nd123 single crystals prepared in a reduced oxygen partial pressure. This pinning center is more conductive on the surface than the matrix and has a size ranging from several to several tens of nanometers as seen by STM. Similar pinning center may be introduced to other high temperature superconductors to increase their critical current densities in an applied magnetic field. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary Background Pemphigus is an antidesmoglein (Dsg) autoimmune disease that is divided into two major subtypes: pemphigus foliaceus (PF) and pemphigus vulgaris (PV). We previously developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) using recombinant Dsg1 and Dsg3 to detect IgG autoantibodies in patients with pemphigus. The protocol for the ELISAs was optimized for serological diagnosis, but under the conditions used, these assays were not particularly useful for monitoring disease activity in certain patients. That is, the sera from some patients with high-titre antibodies continued to show high index values in the ELISA after clinical improvement. Objectives In the study reported here, we modified the ELISA protocol to obtain ‘true’ index values that exhibit a better correlation with disease activity. Methods We tested two cases of pemphigus foliaceus (PF) and four cases of pemphigus vulgaris (PV), each with ELISA index values greater than 150 for Dsg1 or Dsg3. We ran an ELISA with sera from these patients serially diluted from 1 : 100 to 1 : 12,800. We then performed ELISA with a series of PV No. 1 sera diluted to 1 : 800 and PV No. 2–4 and PF No. 1–2 sera diluted to 1 : 1600, after which we plotted the ELISA index values against the time course of disease activity. Results In each of these cases, there was no apparent decline, over the course of the disease activity, in the ELISA index values at a serum dilution of 1 : 100, probably because the antigen–antibody reaction was saturated at that dilution. After running an ELISA with sera serially diluted from 1 : 100 to 1 : 12,800 we found that a linear dose-dependency between the dilution value and the index value was only observed when sera were diluted to 1 : 800 or more in one case (PV No.1) and to 1 : 1600 or more in the other five cases (PV No. 2–4, PF No. 1–2). After performing ELISA with these series as outlined above we plotted the ELISA index values against the time course of disease activity and found that the index values obtained from these appropriately diluted sera fluctuated in parallel with disease activity, and declined with clinical improvement. Conclusions These findings indicate that when appropriate dilutions are used in Dsg1 and Dsg3 ELISA, these assays can provide useful serological information for assessing disease activity in PF and PV.

Notes: Summary We report a patient with melorheostosis in whom increased procollagen α1(I) mRNA expression and α1(I), α2(I) and α1(III) collagen secretion were observed in dermal fibroblasts obtained from a skin biopsy overlying the involved bone. The patient was a 53-year-old man with melorheostosis lesions over the left knee joint. Multiple pigmented macules were present on the medial aspect of the lower left leg. Hyperpigmentation of the basal keratinocytes, thick-walled vessels in the reticular dermis, and proliferation of normal-appearing collagen around the hair follicles were observed histologically.

Notes: A 42-year-old man presented with painful erythema with pustules and multiple small ulcers on the shins. He had suffered from ulcerative colitis (UC) and received oral glucocorticosteroid and salicylazosulfapyridine therapies for 7 years. Biopsy of the lesion demonstrated mixed cellular infiltrates with dominant neutrophils. The patient was diagnosed with pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) and underwent leukocytapheresis (LCAP), an extracorporeal leucocyte removal therapy, once a week for 5 weeks without changing the doses of the oral medications. The skin lesions as well as clinical signs of UC rapidly improved after LCAP, and no recurrence was seen during a follow-up period. There were no major complications during LCAP. LCAP will provide an effective and safe tool for the treatment of PG.
