Notes: The effect of two-wavelength oscillation for short-optical-pulse generation in laser diodes by sinusoidal current modulation has been investigated using a rate equation analysis. A high peak power and short pulse without a tail can be generated at the shorter wavelength λ2 with the help of carrier damping through carrier-photon conversion at the longer wavelength λ1. This can be obtained provided that the cw threshold current for λ1 is lower than that for λ2 and the gain g2 larger than g1 at the high carrier excitation levels that occur under the conditions of gain switching.

Notes: Short optical pulse generation from an external-cavity laser diode (LD) by optical pulse pumping has been investigated for the first time. An optical pulse train (pulse duration ∼40 ps) generated by a gain-switched LD was injected into a LD with an external cavity (slave LD) which was biased just below the laser threshold. The wavelength of the injected optical pulse was chosen to be slightly shorter than that of the slave LD. When the repetition rate of the optical injection pulse was nearly equal to the round trip time of the external cavity, the slave LD showed stable mode locking with the shorter pulse duration (∼22 ps) than that of the pumping pulse. At both the upper and lower repetition rates, the pulse duration of the slave LD also became shorter than that of the pumping pulse.

Notes: Optical demultiplexing characteristics are studied using a multielectrode distributed feedback laser amplifier. The gain maximum frequency is tunable over 20.6 GHz with a constant insertion gain (9.7±1.2 dB) and a constant gain bandwidth (2.9 GHz), without any mode jump, by changing the driving current of the divided two electrodes. A single optical signal can be selected from two optical inputs separated by 15.4 GHz with an extinction ratio of better than −20 dB.

Notes: A new, incoherent, optical negative feedback method is proposed and demonstrated for spectral linewidth reduction and optical frequency stabilization of distributed feedback lasers. The spectral linewidth and the optical frequency drift are simultaneously reduced to about 50 kHz and less than 10 MHz, respectively.

Notes: We have applied a coherent photon seeding technique to actively mode locked laser diodes for the first time and successfully achieved a single longitudinal laser diode mode operation with a side mode suppression ratio of −20 dB. We have also proposed a new kind of pulse compressor consisting of a grating and a plane mirror, which gives positive group velocity dispersion. We obtained 11 ps pulses with spectral width of 0.32 nm. This gives us a time bandwidth product of 0.63, which is approximately twice the transform limited value for a sech2 pulse.

Notes: Abstract Recent progress in the study of both absorptive and dispersive bistability in semiconductor injection lasers is reported. Inhomogeneously excited semiconductor lasers as an absorptive case, and laser diode optical amplifiers and optical injection locking systems of laser diodes as dispersive cases, are described. Applications of bistable semiconductor lasers, such as optical memories, optical regenerative amplifiers and all-optical switching, are also discussed.
