    Notes: Real-time Raman measurements have been performed on Si(111) under Ar+ ion irradiation with a time resolution of 15 s. Ion flux of 3×1011 ions cm−2 s−1 and ion energy of 3 and 5 keV are used. Decrease in the intensity of the TO line (at 521 cm−1) has been observed as irradiation time increases. The reduction rate of 5-keV irradiation is larger than that of 3-keV irradiation.

    Notes: Oxidation of silicon in a radio frequency discharge oxygen plasma was studied using in situ during process rapid ellipsometry (1 s resolution and interval). Plasma characteristics were also determined by the Langmuir probe method and emission spectroscopy. From the measurement of in situ during process rapid ellipsometry, oxidized film thickness of silicon increased steeply right after starting rf discharge and slowly after ≈3000 s. It was found that thickness change rate measured by in situ during process rapid ellipsometry immediately after starting the rf discharge was strongly proportional to O2+ ions density.

    Notes: Gaseous SiO formation by silicon surface oxidation has been measured using a multiphoton ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The long induction time of the SiO formation and the adsorption of the O2 beam have been observed in the time dependence of the SiO+, Si+, and O+2 signals during surface oxidation. The nonlinear dependence of the SiO and Si atom densities on O2 gas pressure has been observed in the low O2 pressure range of 10−6–10−4 Pa and suggests that the Si atoms are mainly due to the photodissociation of gaseous SiO molecules.

    Notes: The Raman spectra of MoO3 implanted with 1, 2, and 4×1016 H+/cm2 have been recorded at room temperature. It was found that most of the Raman modes of Ag and Bg symmetry, which are observed between 100 and 1100 cm−1, decrease in intensity by the electronic screening of phonons as a result of the electron transfer from hydrogen to Mo. In addition, both Raman modes of Ag symmetry at 998 and 811 cm−1 for MoO3 noticeably stiffened at 4×1016 H+/cm2, while the orthorhombic structure of MoO3 remains unchanged exhibiting no significant change in lattice parameters except for any possible distortion of the MoO6 octahedron. The present results are compared with previous studies, in reference to structural information of the hydrogen molybdenum bronzes as well as MoO3. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of defects on the dynamics of photoexcited carriers and coherent acoustic phonon in graphite is investigated by means of reflectivity measurements with femtosecond time resolution. Point defects are introduced by irradiating graphite with 5 keV He+ ions. Introduction of the defects enhances the carrier relaxation by opening a decay channel via vacancy states, which competes efficiently with carrier–phonon scattering. The coherent phonon relaxation is also accelerated due to an additional scattering by defects. The linear fluence dependence of the decay rate is understood as scattering of propagating acoustic phonon by single vacancies. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: First principle quantum chemical calculations have been performed on a hydrogen molecule in the silicon crystal using the cluster model of Si10H16. The ab initio molecular orbital theory and the density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been examined. In all calculations, the tetrahedral site is the most stable trapping site for the hydrogen molecule. The DFT calculations with generalized gradient approximation show that the bond length of H2 in the silicon crystal is comparable to that of gaseous H2. The calculated vibrational frequency of H2 in the silicon crystal agrees well with the experimental value obtained by Murakami et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 3161 (1996)]. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Aim:  To demonstrate the antitumour effects of nobiletin (5,6,7,8,3′,4′-hexamethoxyflavone), a citrus flavonoid extracted from Citrus depressa Hayata, on human gastric cancer cell lines TMK-1, MKN-45, MKN-74 and KATO-III.Materials and methods:  3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, the TdT-mediated dUTP biotin nick-end labelling (TUNEL) method and cell-cycle analysis revealed that nobiletin acted on these cells in several ways, namely by direct cytotoxicity, induction of apoptosis and modulation of cell cycle. The efficacy of combined treatment of nobiletin with a conventional anticancer drug, CDDP, was also examined. Treatment with nobiletin 24 h prior to CDDP administration showed a synergistic effect compared to the control.Conclusions:  Although the effective dose and administration route of nobiletin require further investigation, our study represents a potential successful linking of this compound with the treatment of gastric cancer.

    Notes: Background: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes capable of degrading collagens and other extracellular matrix components, have been implicated in gastric ulcer formation. However, the effect on MMP expression of Helicobacter pylori, also implicated in these lesions, has not been studied to our knowledge. Aim: To seek links between H. pylori and MMP expression likely to affect gastric ulcer formation. After fibroblasts from human gastric wall were cocultured with H. pylori, concentrations of MMP-1 and -2 in the medium were determined by enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assays. Results: Whereas MMP-1 was not detected in media from fibroblasts or H. pylori culture alone, MMP-1 was detected in cocultures (P 〈 0.01). Similar amounts of MMP-2 were detected in medium from fibroblasts cultured alone and with H. pylori. No MMP-2 production by H. pylori cultured alone was detected. Conclusions: MMP-1 appears to be important in gastric ulcer pathogenesis, and MMP-1 induction by H. pylori may impede gastric ulcer healing.

    Notes: Recently, chicken egg yolk was recognized as an inexpensive antibody source, and the therapeutic usefulness of egg yolk immunoglobulin Y (IgY) in oral passive immunization has been investigated. Although multiple antibiotic treatments eradicate most Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections, therapy fails in 10–15% of cases due to the development of drug resistance. Consequently, it is important that new, more broadly based therapies for the treatment of H. pylori infection should be identified. The present study evaluated the effect, on H. pylori infection, of IgY prepared from egg yolk of hens immunized with H. pylori urease (anti-HpU IgY). Seventeen asymptomatic volunteers diagnosed as H. pylori-positive by the 13C-urea breath test (UBT) were orally administered anti-HpU IgY for 4 weeks. Four weeks later, UBT values were significantly decreased although no case showed H. pylori eradication. An H. pylori-positive 53-year-old female gastritis patient administered anti-HpU IgY plus lansoprazole for 8 weeks showed a decrease in serum pepsinogen (PG) I and UBT values as well as an increase in the PG I/II ratio. In conclusion, anti-HpU IgY may mitigate H. pylori-associated gastritis and partially attenuate gastric urease activity. Furthermore, anti-HpU IgY combined with antacids appears to ameliorate gastric inflammation. These encouraging results may represent a novel approach to the management of H. pylori-associated gastroduodenal disease.
