Notes: Immunoglobulin was obtained from a hybridoma cell line, which was a reclone of a hybrid between a rabbit cell and mouse myeloma cell (X63-Ag8). The immunoglobulin, isolated from the cell culture medium was found to be homogeneous by isoelectrofocusing and immunoelectrophoresis and consisted of mouse heavy and rabbit light chains, linked by disulphide bonds. All immunoglobulin molecules carried both mouse and rabbit determinants; mouse determinants were associated only with the heavy chains while rabbit determinants were only associated with the light chains. The rabbit light chains were of Ab4 allotypical specificity, but possess only some of the Ab4 determinants normally present in Ab4/Ab4 animals. It was sugested that the restriction in allotypical specificity may be a general property of light chain Ab allotypes; the normal serum immunoglobulins may be heterogeneous with respect to the allotypic determinants and any one molecule may possess only a proportion of determinants detected by a conventional anti-allotype antiserum.

Notes: Summary Between 1970 and 1979, 123 synovectomies of the ankle joint were performed on 99 patients. Sixty two of these patients (81 ankles) were followed up for an average period of four years. Using Steinbrocker's classification 10 ankles had Stage I disease, 34 had Stage II, 33 had Stage III and 4 had Stage IV. In more than 80% of the joints pain and swelling significantly decreased after operation, with improvement in te range of motion and of the gait pattern. However the procedure did not change the walking distance or dependency upon walking aids, probably because the ankle joint was rarely the only joint of the lower extremity affected by rheumatoid arthritis.

Notes: Abstract Glycerinated myocardial fibres treated with a detergent (Lubrol WX) and suspended in ATP salt solution produce half maximum isometric tension at pCa 6.2 (at pH 6.7). After addition of cyclic AMP (1–100 μM), the pCa required for half maximum activation is 5.9. c-AMP in concentrations of 1–100 μM induces a dose dependent inhibition (up to 40$ at pCa 6), and this effect can be amplified by the phosphodiesterase inhibitor IBMX (3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine) 10−4 M. The effect is similar in presence and absence of sodium fluoride 10 mM. Since in detergent treated skinned fibres the cell membrane and the sarcoplasmic reticulum are extracted and since the Ca2+ ion concentration was kept constant and buffered, we propose that c-AMP does not act via the cell membrane or the sarcoplasmic reticulum, but via phosphorylation of troponin I. The latter is the only component which becomes phosphorylated in skinned fibres during c-AMP induced relaxation, an effect which is also responsible for the inhibition of actomyosin ATPase at constant Ca2+ ion concentration (cf. Ray and England 1976).

Notes: Abstract The role of the tumour-suppressor gene p53 in the tumorigenesis of head and neck cancer has been well established, but the clinical significance of p53 alteration is still unclear. A group of 50 patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) were investigated for p53 alterations. DNA was extracted from fresh tumour samples and polymerase chain reaction/single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis was used to detect p53 gene mutations in the region from exon 5 to exon 9. In addition, p53 protein overexpression was assessed by immunohistochemistry using the monoclonal antibody DO-7 on paraffin-embedded tissue sections. p53 gene mutations were found in 45% and p53 protein expression was detected in 61.2% of tumour samples. While p53 protein expression was not correlated with any clinical factors, p53 gene mutations indicated local regional recurrences of HNSCC. The risk of locoregional recurrence was significantly greater in patients with a p53 gene mutation than in patients with the wild-type p53 gene (P = 0.001). Multivariate analysis confirmed p53 gene mutation to be an independently predictive factor for the tumour recurrence (P = 0.0064). When we analysed p53 gene mutation in 12 patients with primary and recurrent tumours, we found that 4 patients (33.3%) had a different p53 gene mutation in the recurrent tumour from that in the original primary tumour. The results indicate that p53 gene mutations and not protein overexpression are valuable predictors for tumour recurrences and for differential diagnosis of a second primary HNSCC.

Notes: Summary Biomass and energy budgets and food utilization efficiencies of laboratory and wild populations of three Central European grasshopper species, Chorthippus parallelus (Zetterstedt), C. biguttulus (L.), and Gomphocerus rufus (L.), were studied between 1979 and 1984. Larval consumption is relatively low in C. biguttulus (C=4.3 kJ/ind.) compared with C. parallelus and G. rufus (4.9 kJ/ind.). In the adult phase (maturity) consumption rates of C. biguttulus and G. rufus (6.9 kJ/ind.) are similar, but higher in C. parallelus (7.3 kJ/ind.). The energy content decreases from the egg (23.2–24.3 J/mg dw) and body tissue (22.1–23.2 J/mg dw) to faeces (16.6–18.1 J/mg dw). The energy contents of faeces differ significantly between the species, indicating different rates of food conversion (on Dactylis glomerata). On average, the assimilation rates are about 30%, slightly lower in G. rufus. Approximate digestibility (A/C) ranges from 28.2 (G. rufus) to 35.7 (C. biguttulus) without great differences between larvae and adults. In contrast, the efficiency of conversion of ingested food (P/C) differs significantly between larval (10–11) and adult stages (3.4–3.6), and so to a much higher degree does the efficiency of conversion of digested food (P/A), from 30.3–33.5 in the larval to 9.5–14.9 in the adult period. Based on 5-year (C. parallelus) and 2-year studies (G. rufus) of the population dynamics and life tables, the energy budgets of wild populations were calculated and summarized into diagrams. Depending on the annually fluctuating densities, in both populations about 1%–2% of net primary production was consumed, and another 5%–9% was cut and dropped. The proportion of production of the grasshopper populations (body tissue) used for egg production differs in C. parallelus (28%) and G. rufus (44%). The energy cycling owing to energy storage in the living eggs amounts to 2%–3% of the total energy consumed by the population. The results are compared with the available data for grasshoppers in the literature.

Notes: Abstract In the St. Andreasberg ore district, southwest Harz, at some time between the main and subsequent stages of mineralization sensu Wilke (1952), potassium feldspar (adularia) was formed hydrothermally. Based on isotopic dating (Rb/Sr, 40Ar/39Ar), the formation of this mineral is ascribed to the Early Cretaceous. Thus, part of the St. Andreasberg mineralization is proved to have been formed in the Late Mesozoic. The mineralization process forming feldspar does not coincide with magmatic phases of the area.

Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.
