Notes: [Auszug] If an aqueous solution of chymotrypsinogen is allowed to evaporate on a glass slide at a temperature of about 20 C very small crystallites are produced. Using carbon films and platinum shadowing it is possible to examine the morphology of replicas by low-magnification electron microscopy, some ...

Notes: Abstract Al2O3-ZrO2 (AZ) eutectic fibres containing 41.05 wt% ZrO2 and 2.03 wt% Y2O3 were produced via inviscid melt spinning (IMS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the morphology of the as-spun AZ fibre. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to investigate the phase transformations in this fibre. The XRD pattern of the as-spun AZ fibre showed tetragonal ZrO2, α-Al2O3, and non-equilibrium δ-Al2O3 phase formation. The DTA curve of the as-spun AZ fibre showed only one endothermic peak representing the phase transformation of δ-Al2O3 to α-Al2O3. This phase transformation was confirmed by analysing the XRD pattern of heat-treated AZ fibre.

Notes: Abstract Inviscid melt-spun calcia-alumina fibre-reinforced aluminium-silicon alloy (4032) composites were produced using a melt-infiltration technique. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to investigate interfacial wetting and interphase formation, and identify the crystalline phase of the interphase of these composites. The composites processed at 700°C showed a good interfacial wetting and silicon accumulation at the interface. The composites processed at 927°C showed formation of an interphase region of about 10–20 μm thick, as well as excellent interfacial wetting. EDS analysis gave averaged compositions of this interphase region at 74 wt % Al and 26 wt % Si, which corresponds to the composition of mullite (3Al2O3 · 2SiO2). The formation of mullite at the interface was confirmed by XRD analysis.

Notes: Epitaxial deposition of homopolymers from solution [polyethylene, isotactic polystyrene, poly-3,3-bischloromethyloxacyclobutane (Penton) and polypropylene] was found on the (001) faces of cleaved alkali halide single crystals. Electron and optical microscopy studies have shown that the polymer usually grew from small, rodlike crystallites which were oriented in (110) directions of the halide crystal. Large oriented, four-leaved, “rose” structures also were observed for polyethylene. Electron diffraction studies indicate that the polymer chain axes for polyethylene, isotactic polystyrene, and Penton generally lie parallel to the (001) faces of the halide crystal and are also oriented in the 〈110〉 directions of the crystal face. Investigations on the effect of various halide substrates upon the epitaxial crystallization habit of polyethylene inferes that lattice matching does not play the major role in orientation. Two possible explanations are offered for this epitaxial behavior.

Notes: We are interested in using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) to measure the degree of cure achieved by aqueous phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resole resins as a result of previous exposures to various temperature-humidity-time regimes. We developed procedures that permit the obtaining of data that properly characterize and quantify the DMA behavior of these aqueous systems. Particularly important factors are substrate selection, sample clamping geometry, and sample humidification prior to analysis. In this report, we illustrate the problems encountered and the steps that we adopted to resolve them. We also present preliminary DMA data that illustrate some approaches for measuring the degree of cure achieved during previous resin exposures. One especially promising approach employs the area under the tan delta curve during isothermal scanning as an inverse measure of precure. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Differential thermal analysis, creep measurements, and gas permeation rates are used to confirm the existence of a transition zone in three butadiene acrylonitrile copolymers in a temperature region that starts at roughly 15° to 25°C above the main glass transition temperatures of the copolymers and extends over a broad temperature range. The change appears to be slightly endothermic and softens the copolymers upon heating. It is speculated that the copolymers are in a mesomorphic state above their main glass temperature in which there is either a degree of ordering or a low-grade crystallinity of polybutadiene units along the copolymer chains. It is not until the copolymers are 50° to 75°C above their main glass temperature that they become truly amorphous.
