    Notes: To attain reproducible and stable contacts to compound semiconductor devices, it is necessary to achieve thermodynamically stable phases after the reaction of metals with the compound semiconductor. In this study, the final phases produced by the reactions between GaAs and thin metal films of Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd, and Pt have been investigated. They are identified as MGa for M=Co, Rh, Ni, Pd, and Pt, monoarsenides of Co and Ni, diarsenides of Rh, Ir, Pd, and Pt, and Ir3Ga5. These phases, if deposited directly onto GaAs, will produce thermally stable contacts. In addition to the identification of these stable phases, analyses of the products of thin-film M/GaAs reactions by transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry reveal the distribution, grain size, and crystallographic texture of these end phases. Trends in these observations across the six metal/GaAs reactions studied are explained by considering the effects of bond strength and the relative diffusivities of the reacting species. The role of film thickness in determining the final phases and the phase distribution is also considered.

    Notes: The enthalpy of the reaction Ba(g)+2C(graph.)=BaC2(g) has been determined by Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry over a barium alloy with noble metals contained in a graphite cell. The value ΔH(open circle)0 =252.5± 11.5kJ mol−1 has been obtained from second- and third-law evaluations of the equilibrium vapor in the temperature range 1778–2286 K. This reaction enthalpy has been combined with ancillary literature data to derive the following thermodynamic properties in kJ mol−1 of gaseous BaC2: the atomization energy, ΔatH(open circle)0 , 1180.9±12.2; the standard heat of formation, ΔfH(open circle)298 , 437.1±14.2; the enthalpy of sublimation of BaC2(s), ΔsubH(open circle)298 , 511.2±17.1; and the bond dissociation energy, D(open circle)0 (Ba–C2), 581.7±14.8. The results are discussed with regard to their possible significance in reactor technology.

    Notes: The three-dimensional magnetic structure and reversal mechanism of patterned Co/Pt multilayers, were imaged using complementary Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (in-plane component) and magnetic transmission x-ray microscopy (perpendicular magnetization). The Co/Pt films with perpendicular anisotropy were patterned by ion irradiation through a stencil mask to produce in-plane magnetization in the irradiated regions. The boundaries of the patterns, defined by the transition from out-of-plane to in-plane magnetization, were found to be determined by the stencil mask. The nucleation fields were substantially reduced to 50 Oe for the in-plane regions and 1 kOe for the perpendicular regions, comparing to 4.5 kOe for the as-grown film. The perpendicular reversals were found to always originate at the pattern boundaries. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on the growth of high-quality diamond using a microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system in which the feed gas contains no hydrocarbons, but instead the source of carbon is a graphite piece which resides within the plasma volume. Results of experiments using this technique by itself and in combination with the normal methane feed gas method are described. The samples were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Diamond grown in this way was found to be particularly pure and of high crystallinity.

    Notes: A standard assumption of disaggregate mode-choice models is that an individual faced with a choice among several available alternative transportation modes compares their utilities. These utilities are almost always expressed as a linear composite measure of various perceived benefits which are assumed constant. However, the individual's perceptions change as he learns, acquires new habits, or adapts to different physical, economic, and social circumstances. In order to account for these changes, two dynamic models of model-choice behavior are developed herein. These two models are based on two common postulates. (1) One alternative is preferred over another only if the absolute difference in their utilities exceeds a positive constant; otherwise, the decision maker is indifferent toward the two alternatives. (2) If an alternative is preferred, it will be chosen with certainty.In the indifference state, the individual is postulated to randomly choose one of the two alternatives (Model 1) or choose the same alternative as was most recently chosen (Model 2). Choice probabilities derived from these two models are shown to differ from those obtained using the conventional logit model. If there is a strong loyalty toward a mode, the logit model underestimates its choice probability when that mode is less attractive than the competing mode. The results are illustrated using numerical examples.

    Notes: Certain motor vehicle safety standards stipulate a collision test speed and a set of performance criteria that vehicles must satisfy during or after the collision test. For example, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 301 requires a 30 mile per hour (mph) barrier collision and specifies a certain maximum allowable limit on the total spillage of fuel. Vehicle designs are required to meet this standard; however, when collision tests are conducted at speeds higher than the standard, vehicles do not always satisfy the performance criteria. This paper develops a mathematical model for estimating the probability of meeting the standard by using a Bayesian framework to incorporate engineering judgment with collision test results. The model is based on the idea that there are random features to a vehicle's ability to meet performance standards in a collision, especially at such elevated speeds. Example calculations are included to illustrate the estimation of the probability of meeting the standard and to compare it with a maximum likelihood approach.

    Notes: : In this study the estimation of parameters in water quality models represented by linear first order partial differential equations is investigated. Two sets of simulated input-output data, one with input noise and the other with output measurement error, were used. The parameters were estimated by a gradient technique (Bard's method) and a pattern search technique. The results indicate that the output measurement error significantly affects the values of parameter estimates as compared to the noise added to the input. Bard's method consistently gave results with a smaller sum of square value.
