Notes: Aims : To assess if the rising incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in the United States can be accounted for by immigration and an ageing population, or is a true increase among the USA-born residents. Methods : Design– A retrospective chart review. Setting– Urban, multiethnic hospital and specialty clinics in a large indigent health system in Houston, Texas. Subjects– Approximately 23 000 admissions and 143 000 out-patient clinic visits each year from 1992 through 2001 were assessed. A total of 494 patient records were selected and reviewed because of suspicion of hepatocellular carcinoma. Analysis– Hepatocellular carcinoma was confirmed by histopathology, α-fetoprotein level 〉400 ng/mL, and suggestive imaging studies. The age-adjusted incidence was determined and causative factors were identified. Results : About 111 cases of confirmed hepatocellular carcinoma were found. The age-adjusted incidence rose from 3.44 per 100 000 hospital admissions during 1992–1996 (95% confidence interval: 2.86–4.02) to 5.19 during 1997–2001 (95% confidence interval: 4.41–5.97). The proportion of patients of non-USA place of birth decreased between 1992–1996 and 1997–2001 (46–24%, respectively, P = 0.03). Fifty-two per cent and 68% were hepatitis C virus-positive respectively; 37% and 34% were hepatitis B surface antigen-positive respectively; 46% and 59% had a history of alcohol abuse; and 22% and 11% had no identifiable risk factors. Conclusions : The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma within the greater Houston area has increased during the past decade, rising by 51% from 1992–1996 to 1997–2001. This increase is not from immigration or population ageing but represents a true rise among the native born population. Hepatitis C and alcoholic cirrhosis are associated with a majority of cases, particularly in the latter half of the decade.

Notes: Abstract Four tereunsaturated polyesters (TUPs) based on terephthalic acid, maleic anhydride and polyethylene glycol, molecular weight 200 (PEG-200), have been formulated, synthesized and characterised. The effect of variation of styrene monomer and alumina trihydrate (Al2O3·3H2O) filler has been studied on TUP-1 which possesses promising characteristics. Based on these characteristics, TUP-1 (III) with 20% Al2O3·3H2O filler has been selected for inhibition and static evaluation of double-base rocket propellants. The results indicate that it is a potential inhibitor for double-base propellants.

Notes: In the last ten years, a considerable amount of work has been conducted on many different processes distinct from common plastics processing methods such as injection molding, extrusion, and compression molding. Perhaps the most common feature of these new techniques is that they resemble more the methods used for fabricating metallic materials in solid phase. However, there is a lack of uniform terminology. More importantly, the commercial acceptance and applicability of these processes have been slow. This review attempts to summarize the important findings of various publications and, whenever possible, to give information about potential or actual industrial applications. The purpose is to provide a brief overview of the state-of-the-art of the whole technology. Advantages, disadvantages, and the need for more work are pointed out as they relate to different processes and to crystalline and amorphous materials. A few instances where material was heated beyond the melting temperature by a small amount are included in the review when the processing method was similar to solid-phase forming.

Notes: The diffusion coefficients (D) of nitroglycerine (NG) migration through cured non-halo and halo polyesters have been calculated with the help of M∞ determined experimentally and Fick's Law. The calculated NG migrations at different time intervals compare very closely with the corresponding NG migrations determined experimentally. The concentration profiles at various locations in thin sheets of non-halo and halo polyesters have also been calculated.

Notes: Unsaturated halo and nonhalo polyesters, based on tetrachlorophthalic anhydride, tetrabromophthalic anhydride, and phthalic anhydride with diethylene glycol and maleic anhydride, have been synthesized, using a “2-step” polyesterification process. These were mixed with 35% styrene monomer and 0.02% hydroquinone. The structural aspects of halo and nonhalo polyesters have been studied by IR and NMR. Further, these polyesters have been characterized for various properties. A comparison of various properties suggests that tensile strength, bond strength, heat resistance, flame retardance, gel time, and oxygen index follow the order as BP-35 〉 CP-35 〉 NHP-35, whereas the order for other properties, such as exotherm peak temperature, thermal conductivity, % elongation, and nitroglycerine absorption, is BP-35 〈 CP-35 〈 NHP-35. Variation in the properties of cured halo and nonhalo polyesters has been discussed in terms of structural considerations. The nature of P-t profile of inhibited double-base (DB) rocket propellants on static evaluation suggests that CP-35 is a potential inhibitor for DB propellants. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Articles with increased rigidity can be obtained by compression molding at high pressures as shown by experiments with five types of linear polyethylene. The materials, with weight average molecular weight ranging up to 1,000,000 were molded at pressures as high as 80,000 psi. The material temperature was 149-204°C, and the tooling was at 38°C. The duration of load was typically 3 mins, and the thickness of the molded disks was 12.7 mm. The results show that at high molding pressure the tensile modulus of the material is nearly twice that of materials molded conventionally at low pressures. This increase in modulus occurs for all the materials studied and even for a duration of load of only one min. The causes for this large increase in modulus were investigated with the help of density and melting point measurements and optical and electron microscopy. It was observed that the spherulites showed a distinctive and systematic change with the forming pressure. A hypothesis is proposed to explain the high modulus phenomenon on the basis of the kinetics of spherulite formation.

Notes: Seven unsaturated chloropolyesters based on tetrachlorophthalic anhydride (TCPAn) maleic anhydride (MAn), and propylene glycol (PG) (designated as CP-1) and TCPAn, MAn, and polyethylene glycol molecular weight 200 (PEG-200) (designated as CP-2), and TCPAn, MAn, and mixed glycols (PG & PEG-200 in different molar proportions) and designated as CPM-2, CPM-4, CPM-6, etc. (depending upon molar proportions) have been synthesized. The flameretardant characteristics have been assigned by measuring heat resistance (loss in weight) and flame retardance (burning rate), and it is found that in these chloropolyesters thermal stability increases as chlorine percentage increases. In addition, these chloropolyesters have been characterized for gel time, exotherm peak temperature, tensile strength, percentage elongation and bond strength, nitroglycerine absorption, and cross-link density. Based on these properties, CPM-9 with 30% styrene (designated as CPM-9s) has been selected for inhibition and static evaluation trials, after conditioning at ambient, cold (-40°C), and hot (+50°C) temperatures. The nature of pressure-time profiles indicate the suitability of “CPM-9s” for the inhibition of double-base (containing 2-NDPA) propellants.
