Notizen: An approximate analytical model describing transport of chloride in a concrete wall from a wet face in contact with salt solution to an internal liquid/gas interface located near a drying face (wick action) is presented. A constant concentration of the solution is assumed for the wet face of the concrete, and continuity of fluxes is assumed at the interface. The model is shown to be reasonably accurate over a practical range of the Peclet number, a transport parameter which shows the balance between convection and diffusion. Predictions of the model are compared with experimental data, a numerical solution, and an asymptotic solution, and good agreement is obtained. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Wick action is the transport of water and any species it may contain through a concrete element from a face in contact with water to a drying face. Analytical models are presented for chloride transport in concrete due to wick action. Two cases are considered for convection-controlled systems: (1) No precipitation of chloride salt at a wet-dry interface, and (2) precipitation of chloride salt at the interface. For both cases, a constant concentration of chloride salt is assumed for the face of the concrete in contact with salt solution, while at the interface continuity of fluxes is assumed for Case 1, and a constant chloride saturation level for Case 2. Perturbation techniques are used to solve the transient problems for the two cases investigated. The perturbation solution is compared with experimental and numerical results and good agreement is found when chloride binding is accounted for. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Summary. The 16 989 singleton births in one week of March, 1958, studied by the British Perinatal Mortality Survey, were subjected to an analysis of covariance, which showed that major factors associated with birthweight of the infant were: maternal height, history of smoking in pregnancy, parity and history of pre-eclampsia during the pregnancy. The same analysis was repeated on the data collected on 16 792 singletons born 12 years later in one week of April, 1970 and studied by the British Births Survey. In spite of major changes in obstetric practice and in the maternal population, the same factors were shown to be highly significant and the magnitude of the associations had changed little.

Notizen: A zero Reynolds number approximation to the Orr–Sommerfeld equation is used to assess the effects that viscosity stratification has on the stability of a very viscous flow on an incline when surface tension is negligible. Results indicate that for a two-layer system with uniform density, the flow is always unstable when the viscosity of the upper layer is greater than that of the lower layer, regardless of the thickness of the upper layer. The wavenumber of the fastest growing mode is on the order of the inverse of the thickness of the upper layer, implying that the instability is manifested in waves having finite wavelength, whereas previous research on this topic has focused on a long wavelength approximation. It is further shown that neutral stability is independent of the angle of inclination of the underlying slope, although the growth rate of any instability is not. The results suggest that the transverse surficial ridges, which commonly occur on the surfaces of rock glacier forms, may be the product of a flow instability arising from the differing viscosities of the layers that comprise such features.

Notizen: The spin coating of polymer solutions is discussed, with emphasis on the nature of the evaporation boundary condition. A dimensional analysis reveals that the appropriate condition is a constant small evaporation rate, which is determined by the mass transfer in the adjacent atmosphere. An error in previous work [Phys. Fluids 31, 2786 (1988)] is brought to light, and it is shown that the previous paper would be valid for rapid evaporation, such as might occur if the ambient condition were near vacuum. The transport of solvent in the liquid film is described by a boundary layer diffusion equation with large Peclet number P0. When the dimensionless evaporation rate eˆ is small, the diffusion equation has a self-similar solution in which the boundary layer thickness and polymer concentration increase in proportion to the decrease in film thickness. The final film thickness is determined by the boundary layer thickness, which is controlled by P0 and is independent of eˆ. Thus the final film thickness is found to be the same as for the case of rapid evaporation.

Notizen: The process of spin coating is described, with particular attention to applications in microelectronics. The physical mechanisms involved in the process are discussed and those mechanisms that affect the final state are identified, viz., centrifugal and viscous forces, solute diffusion, and solvent evaporation: A model is proposed that incorporates only the latter mechanisms, with viscosity and diffusivity depending on solute concentration. The evaporation of solvent during spinning causes the solution viscosity to increase and the flow is reduced. The thickness of the final solid film is related to the thickness of a diffusion boundary layer near the free surface. The model predicts the final dry film thickness in terms of the primary process variables, spin speed, and initial polymer concentration. A similarity boundary-layer analysis leads to a simple approximate result for the final film thickness that is consistent with limited experimental data, hf ∼KC0(ν0D0)1/4/Ω1/2, where K is a number of order unity and the other quantities are, respectively, the initial polymer concentration, the kinematic viscosity, the solute diffusivity, and the spin speed. The dependence on diffusivity has not previously been described theoretically. The total spin time is shown to be proportional to Ω−1, in agreement with experiment. The rate of solvent evaporation is shown to be proportional to Ω, which contradicts previous assumptions.

Notizen: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study we investigated the effect of a single pre-induction intravenous dose of dexmedetomidine 2 μg.kg−1 on anaesthetic requirements and peri-operative haemodynamic stability in 50 patients undergoing minor orthopaedic and general surgery. Patients were anaesthetised with nitrous oxide/oxygen/fentanyl, supplemented if necessary with isoflurane. The mean (SD) intra-operative isoflurane concentration was lower in the dexmedetomidine-treated patients than controls (0.01 (0.03)% compared to 0.1 (0.1)%; p = 0.001) although six of the 25 treated patients required isoflurane at some stage. The haemodynamic response to tracheal intubation and extubation was reduced in the dexmedetomidine group as was intra-operative heart rate variability; postoperative analgesic and anti-emetic requirements and peri-operative serum catecholamine concentrations were lower in the dexmedetomidine group. Hypotension and bradycardia occurred more frequently after dexmedetomidine.
