Notes: Harwell's primary role. is to serve as the main research laboratory supporting the U. K. nuclear power development programme; in addition it undertakes research and development outside of the nuclear field for Government and industrial customers. Overall, there is the need to manage a very large number of separate and often disparate items of work and to ensure effective communication with senior managers of the nuclear power programme and with commercial customers on allocation of resources and technical progress. This is done through a version of “matrix management”. A large proportion of the technical, commercial and staff management decisions are devolved within Harwell's matrix organisation where teams of staff required for particular items of R & D are formed by arrangements agreed locally between the two axes of the matrix. The smaller groupings of staff created in the matrix are important in providing environments where good staff management practices can be established and where a team spirit aids motivation and technical initiative.

Notes: According to linear interincisal measurements, women have a smaller maximum jaw opening than men. In this study the difference was 2.7%. In contrast, epidemiological surveys indicate that woman have a greater mobility of joints and generally more joint laxity.Covariate analysis was used to test for the difference between sexes in mean maximum passive opening adjusted according to group mean differences in other parameters of body size. The net result was that the values became more equal between sexes.A second method, employing a geometric estimation for the angle of maximum jaw opening, showed that women had a 5.4% wider range of jaw opening than men (P〈0.057). This method avoided the problem of considering relative body size and body factors which generally correlated poorly with maximum opening. It should be noted that an increased range of opening is a measure of hyperextensibility and does not necessarily imply laxity or instability.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this review paper is to give an overview of the development and implications of nanotechnology in photocatalysis. The topics covered include a detailed look at the unique properties of nanoparticles and their relation to photocatalytic properties. Current applications of and research into the use of nanoparticles as photocatalysts has also been reviewed. Also covered is the utilization of nanoparticles in doped, coupled, capped, sensitized and organic–inorganic nanocomposite semiconductor systems, with an effort to enhance photocatalytic and/or optical properties of commonly used semiconductor materials. The use of nanocrystalline thin films in electrochemically assisted photocatalytic processes has been included. Finally, the use of nanoparticles has made a significant contribution in providing definitive mechanistic information regarding the photocatalytic process.

Notes: Abstract Generic lifecycle methodologies for object-oriented development have, to date, not given serious consideration to the need for persistence; either in terms of storage of objects in a relational database or in an objectbase. Here, consideration of traditional staged database design methodologies identifies features currently lacking in object-oriented lifecycle methodologies. A new generic methodology (or metamethodology) is proposed which offers more complete support for an information systems development involving persistent objects.

Notes: Summary Nickel dithiocarbamate complexes derived from some sympathomimetic drugs are examined on silica Radial-Pak columns using binary solvents containing a small percentage of an organic polar modifier. Both the type and concentration of this modifier was found to influence the separation of the ternary from the parent binary complexes. When the two ligands in a ternary complex are racemic to each other, separation of the ternary complex is only possible when certain structural requirements of the molecule are fulfilled. Ternary complexes which contain structurally similar, but nonracemic ligands, are shown to be readily separated from binary complexes. When two such complexes differ only in that one of the ligands in one is enantiomeric to a ligand in the second complex, then it can be shown that the ternary complex with the (+) enantiomer ligand elutes faster from the silica column than the one with the (−) enantiomer ligand. An example of the use of ternary complexes for the identification of optical and structurally related impurities in pharmaceutical products is also given.

Notes: Summary The presence of high concentrations of chloride in urine and seawater samples interferes with the separation of arsenic species by ion chromatography; single peaks may be split into two or more discrete peaks, as a result of the large differences in the ionic strengths of the mobile and injection solvents. A simple model is proposed to explain this phenomenon.
