    Notes: The dc to ac radiation converter is a new device in which a relativistic ionization front directly converts the static electric field of an array of alternatively biased capacitors into a pulse of tunable radiation. In a proof-of-principle experiment frequencies between 6 and 21 GHz were generated with plasma densities in the 1012 cm−3 range and a capacitor period 2d=9.4 cm. In the present experiment, short pulses with frequencies between 39 and 84 GHz are generated in a structure with 2d=2 cm. The frequency spectra of these pulses are measured using a diffraction grating. The spectra are discrete, and their center frequency varies linearly with the gas pressure prior to ionization (or plasma density), as expected from theory. Their relative spectral width is around 18%, consistent with the expected number of cycles (six) contained in the pulses. An upper limit of 750 psec (bandwidth detection limited) is placed on the pulses length. The emitted frequency increases from 53 to 93 GHz when the capacitors are connected by pair to obtain a effective array period of 4 cm. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: It is shown that the transition functions that give the global structure of the fiber bundle play an important role in the construction of the metric. The invariance properties of this metric under general gauge transformations are discussed and it is found that the usual requirement of a gauge-invariant metric leads to severe constraints on the gauge fields. To avoid them, it is shown that the metric should instead be covariant with respect to these transformations. Moreover the existence of global actions that are essential in the context of the consistency problem is also discussed. The presence of such actions is studied in both the principal and their associated bundles. In the case of a homogeneous bundle with G/H as the typical fiber, it is shown that a "spliced'' bundle with G×N(H)/H as the structure group has to be used. The unified space is then taken as the bundle space of its associated bundle.

    Notes: The nonrelativistic propagator is derived by formulating the generalized Aharonov–Bohm effect, valid for any gauge group in a general multiply connected manifold, as a gauge artifact in the universal covering space. The loop phase factors and the free homotopy propagators arise naturally. An explicit expression for the propagator when there are two solenoids present is given.

    Notes: To evaluate Helicobacter pylori primary resistance and its clinical impact on the efficacy of two lansoprazole-based eradication triple therapies.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods: H. pylori-positive patients (n=228) were randomized to receive one of the 1-week regimens: lansoprazole 30 mg, clarithromycin 500 mg and amoxicillin 1 g (LAC), or lansoprazole 30 mg, clarithromycin 500 mg and metronidazole 500 mg (LMC), each given twice daily. H. pylori status was assessed by 13C-urea breath test and culture at diagnosis and by 13C-urea breath test 6 weeks after therapy. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined by E-test (n=98).〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:The eradication rates with per protocol/ intention-to-treat analyses were: LAC (n=95/114) 83%/69% and LMC (n=96/114) 85%/72%. Primary resistance was 11% for clarithromycin, 41% for metronidazole and 0% for amoxicillin. Eradication in metronidazole-susceptible/-resistant strains was 85%/82% in LAC and 83%/63% in LMC. Significantly lower cure rates were observed in clarithromycin-resistant patients treated with LAC (95% vs. 0%, P 〈 0.001) and LMC (86% vs. 0%, P 〈 0.001).〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:One-week LAC and LMC are similarly effective therapies. Clarithromycin resistance significantly affected H. pylori eradication in both regimens.

    Notes: Prevotella intermedia, a putative periodontopathic microorganism, requires iron for growth. Hemoglobin can be a major source of iron for bacterial growth in vivo since it is present in the crevicular fluid collected from periodontitis sites. Experiments studying the growth of P. intermedia in iron-depleted Todd-Hewitt broth supplemented with human hemoglobin showed that the bacteria were able to utilize human hemoglobin as a source of iron. The uptake of iron from hemoglobin by P. intermedia appears to be initiated by the binding of hemoglobin to the bacteria as shown by direct binding studies using 125I-labeled human hemoglobin. Scatchard analysis of saturation binding data revealed that 125I-labeled human hemoglobin had a dissociation constant (Kd) of 2.53×10−8 M for the receptor on P. intermedia. Binding of labeled hemoglobin to P. intermedia was competitively inhibited by unlabeled human hemoglobin showing that the binding was specific. The ability of bovine hemoglobin, but not hemin or non-hemoglobin heme-containing compounds, to inhibit binding competitively suggested that the globin moiety of the hemoglobin molecule is recognized by the hemoglobin binding receptors.

    Notes: Abstract Circulating antibody levels to four strains of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) were determined by means of an indirect immunofluorescent technique in three groups of 21 subjects each, including one with juvenile periodontitis (JP), one with chronic periodontitis (CP) and one free of periodontal disease (N). Mean levels of antibody to Aa were significantly elevated in the JP group as compared to the CP and N groups with respect to strains Y4, 29522 and 29524, but not strain 29523. Since strains Y4, 29522 and 29524 contain a leukotoxin that is missing from strain 29523, the results suggest that the leukotoxin could account for the difference in the immune response among the three groups of subjects. Varying the end-point considered to represent positive fluorescence did not significantly affect the results, although discrimination among the three groups appeared to be somewhat better at lower intensities of fluorescence. Because of wide variations in antibody titers recorded in individual subjects, elevated levels of antibody to certain strains of Aa may not be useful as a primary diagnostic test for JP, but may be of value in confirming an otherwise uncertain clinical diagnosis.

    Notes: Abstract 13 patients with untreated adult periodontitis (AP) were compared to 8 subjects free of periodontal disease (H) with respect to plaque index (P1I), gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD) and differential counts of subgingival bacterial morphotypes from a pooled sample of 6 surfaces with the greatest probing depth. Serum antibody levels to T. vincentii and T. denticola strains were also determined in these subjects as well as in the sera from 5 subjects with localized juvenile periodontitis (UP). Subjects with AP had significantly elevated proportions of spirochetes and motile rods and lower proportions of coccoid cells than H subjects. They also exhibited significantly higher P1I and GI scores and greater probing depths. Antibody levels were normalized against a standard serum and expressed as ELISA units (EU). IgA and IgG antibody levels to all tested spirochete strains were significantly elevated in AP subjects as compared to subjects in group H or subjects with LJP. No significant differences in antibody liters were detectable between the H and LJP groups with respect to any of the tested strains. No significant correlation could be demonstrated between serum antibody titers to any of the oral spirochete strains tested and the proportions of oral spirochetes determined microscopically.
