    Notes: Cell suspensions (0.2 ml each) of three lactic streptococci were freeze-dried from distilled water. In order to determine the optimum conditions of rehydration the effect of different factors such as composition, temperature, and pH of rehydrating media on viability of the freeze-dried cells of the lactic streptococci has been studied. Rehydration of freeze-dried cells with 10% solution of dextrose, sucrose or reconstituted skim milk at pH 6.5 and 22°C can be recommended as optimum conditions for maximum recovery of viable cells.

    Notes: Abstract Multiple shoots were obtained from nodal and shoot tip segments of 10 to 15-day-old seedlings of Syzygium cuminii L. on Murashige & Skoog (MS) revised medium supplemented with 6-benzyladenine (BA) (0.23–8.90 μM) singly or in combination with α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) or indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). Excised shoots were placed for root induction on MS medium containing NAA and/or IBA and then transferred to MS basal medium to form complete plantlets. The regenerated plantlets have been acclimatized and successfully transferred into the soil.

    Notes: Abstract Analysis by Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence spectroscopy of monazite ores from Kerala /Chavara and Manavalakurichi/, Orissa /Chattrapur/ and Tamil Nadu /Tirunelveli/ has been carried out for the determination of their elemental composition using109Cd /annular/ and241Am /disc/ radioisotope sources. The elements Y, Zr, Mo, Pb, Th and U were analyzed using a109Cd source, and the elements La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd and Dy were analyzed using the241Am source in side source geometry. Quntitative results on these 13 elements present in these ores were obtained by the EDXRF technique. It was seen that despite the diverse geological settings, there is remarkable similarity in the elemental composition of these ores, although some trace elements do show certain variations from sample to sample. These results are presented and discussed in this paper.

    Notes: Abstract Tungsten ores from Degana, Rajashthan State, India are studied using Mössbauer spectroscopy. The low grade ore exhibits two types of mineral assemblages as per chemical states of iron. The relation between ferrous/ferric ratio and tungsten concentration also supports the existence of two types of mineral assemblages. The Mössbauer spectroscopy of concentrate ore samples has shown the absence of iron. The energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy on the contrary has evidenced the presence of iron in concentrate ore samples but at lower concentration on comparison with low grade ores. These differences in behaviour in the above spectroscopic studies may be additionally due to higher attenuation of γ-radiations and higher atomic weight material in the ore concentrates.

    Notes: Abstract The possible determination of tungsten in low grade ores from Northern India, Rajasthan State has been explored by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis /EDXRF/ technique using radioisotope based excitation of W L X-rays and high resolution Si/Li/ detector system. Finely powdered ore has been diluted with optimal quantity of cellulose and converted into pellets to make it suitable for X-ray analysis after homogenization. The experiments have shown the minimum detectable limit of 33 ppm in diluted matrix. The results are compared with the spectrophotometric stannous chloride-thiocyanate method. EDXRF appears to be encouraging for routine and precise analysis of tungsten in low grade ores.

    Notes: Abstract Phthalimide treatments at 125, 250 and 500 mg 1−1 to female plants of dioecious Morus nigra L. induced intersex and male flowers. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of acid phosphatase in male and female flower buds showed that the male flower had significantly higher levels of the enzyme activity than the female flower buds. The level of acid phosphatase activity significantly increased in intersex and male flowers induced on female plants after phthalimide treatments.

    Notes: A close-coupled side-source geometrical configuration is proposed for obtaining a high detection sensitivity for rare earth elements (57 ≤ Z ≤ 69) by radioisotope-excited energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry. In this configuration a disc source of241 Am (100 mCi), a high-purity germanium detector and thin samles of rare earth elements on a Mylar backing are employed in an optimized geometry to achieve detection limits in the range 20-50 ng for these elements in a counting time of 1 h.

    Notes: A method of sample excitation is proposed for obtaining good sensitivity and detection limits for rare earth elements (57 ≤ Z ≤ 69) by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis using a 241Am radioisotope source. Detection limits of about 100 - 300 ng for most of the elements using a thin multi-element sample on a Mylar backing are obtained for a counting time of 1 h with a 100 mCi source. The configuration employed is a close-coupled collimated side source geometry in which the sample is mounted at 45° to the plane of the detector. This geometry was found to be superior to the commonly used wide annular geometry in terms of the detection limits obtained for the analysis of rare earth elements. A comparative study of the performance of different source geometries using both Mylar- and cellulose-based samples is described.

    Notes: Rare earth molybdate crystals such as those based on lanthanum, neodymium and some mixed molybdates, grown by the gel method, were analysed for major and trace impurity elemental concentrations using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry in order to understand the characteristics of the material in terms of structural perfection and composition. The method used permits the simultaneous determination of rare earth elements such as La and Nd and also Mo and impurities such as Fe and Zn. Based on the observed concentrations of major elements, it is shown that the formulae so far assumed for some of these composites may be incorrect and may need a major refinement. Monoenergetic X-rays of 22.1 and 59.6 keV were employed for fluorescence excitation and optimum detection efficiency was obtained for a large number of elements. Pulverized samples mixed with cellulose powder and specimens prepared in the form of pellets were used. The fundamental parameter method was used for the quantitative estimation of elemental concentration.
