Notes: An evolution equation of microcracks for brittle cracked materials subjected to an applied dynamic tensile pressure is presented. The influence of inertial effects (or kinetics) on the dynamic growth of microcracks, which is a major characteristic of intense dynamic loading, is taken into account. Numerical analysis of the evolution equation clearly indicates that microcrack growth at high strain rate (ε(overdot)≥103 s−1) is unstable. The critical condition for microcrack dynamic growth is obtained. It is predicted that the threshold stress for dynamic growth of microcracks is dependent on the average strain rate at super-high strain rate (ε(overdot)≥106 s−1); however, numerical result is also shown that when the average strain rate ≤105 s−1, the threshold stress can be, approximately, taken to be a constant. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Boron was implanted into the p-type Hg0.7Cd0.3Te epitaxial crystals. The implantation was carried out using a fluence of 1.45×1015 cm−2 and an energy of 100 keV. The implanted specimens, as well as unimplanted ones, were annealed without encapsulation by one-zone annealing in an atmosphere of mercury vapor supplied from liquid mercury at temperatures from 250–500 °C. From the annealing of unimplanted specimens, a p-n transition at 350 °C is observed. On the other hand, from the annealing of implanted specimens, it is found that the n-type conductivity induced by implantation damage is gradually reduced with the increase of annealing temperature until a minimum appears around 350 °C, and then increases again. An enhancement of n-type conductivity can be further observed from annealing under a reduced pressure of mercury. A similar result is also obtained from the annealing of implanted specimens using a HgTe compound as the mercury reservoir instead of liquid mercury. The results suggest that the implanted borons become activated dopants after annealing at high temperature. A mechanism on the activation of boron in HgCdTe is thus proposed, and the experimental results can be satisfactorily explained by the mechanism.

Notes: We report a case of pleomorphic adenoma with extensive squamous metaplasia in the palate of a 52-year-old Chinese man. The dimensions of the tumor were 15x13x13 mm. More than 95% of the epithelial element in the tumor was composed of sheets of squamous cells with cyst formation. The pathogenesis, potential diagnostic pitfalls, proliferative activity and cytokeratin expression of this tumor are discussed.

Notes: Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland: an entity with aggressive clinical behaviour and distinctive cytokeratin expression profiles Aims: Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland is uncommon. This study aims to identify the clinicopathological features and the pattern of expression of cytokeratins and oncoproteins in this tumour. Methods and results: Histological slides from Chinese patients with thyroid cancer treated in our institution from 1980 to 1999 were reviewed. Patients with primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid were identified and their clinical records were analysed. The expression of cytokeratins (CKs), p53 and p21 in these cases were also studied by an immunohistochemical method. Four women (mean age 71 years) with squamous cell carcinoma of thyroid were found. The main presenting features were signs and symptoms of airway obstruction in three patients and neck swelling in one. The tumours were located at the right lobe (n=2), left lobe (n=1) or in both lobes of the thyroid (n=1). One patient died shortly after admission and the other three died within 4 months after thyroidectomy. The p53 protein was positive in 50% (2/4) of the tumours and p53+ tumours were poorly differentiated. The tumours were negative for p21. CK19 was expressed in all the tumours while CK7 expression was noted in 3/4 of the tumours. One carcinoma showed focal positivity to CK18. The tumours were negative for CKs 1, 4, 6, 10/13 and 20. The pattern of cytokeratin expression in squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland was different from carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) of the thyroid gland and oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Conclusions: Squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid has aggressive clinical behaviour and characteristic CK expression pattern. p53 over-expression in these tumours was associated with tumour differentiation.

Notes: Abstract The crack band and the fictitious crack line models of the fracture process zone in cementitious materials are discussed. The two methods are quite similar. However, the fictitious crack model is shown to lend itself to a simple K-superposition method which makes use of known analytical expressions. This method is shown to give very similar results to a finite-element analysis of the fictitious crack model and has the advantage that it can be programmed for a personal computer. The predictive capability of the fictitious crack model is demonstrated by comparison of the experimental load-deflection curve for a small notch bend mortar specimen with a theoretical curve calculated from data obtained from larger beams. It is suggested that the RILEM test method for the determination of the fracture energy should be used also to establish a bilinear stress-displacement relationship for the strain-softening of the fracture process zone.

Notes: Summary Treated herein is an elastica under a point load. One end of the elastica is fully restrained against translation, and elastically restrained against rotation, while the other end portion is allowed to slide over a friction support. The considered elastica problem belongs to the class of large-deflection beam problems with variable deformed arc-lengths between the supports. To solve the governing nonlinear differential equation together with the boundary conditions, the elliptic integral method has been used. The method yields closed-form solutions that are expressed in a set of transcendental equations in terms of elliptic integrals. Using an iterative scheme, pertinent bending results are computed for different values of coefficient of friction, elastic rotational spring constant and loading position, so that their effects may be examined. Also, these accurate solutions provide useful reference sources for checking the convergence, accuracy and validity of results obtained from numerical methods and software for large deflection beam analysis. It is interesting to note that this class of elastica problem may have two equilibrium states; a stable one and an unstable one.
