Notizen: Summary Bilateral renal hypoplasia with oligomeganephronia, associated with bilateral tapetoretinal degeneration was observed in a child; this association has been reported only once before. Light, ultrastructural and immunofluorescent microscopic studies of the renal tissue were performed. The glomeruli were few and hypertrophic, with numerous mesangial cells, mesangial deposits, focal glomerular sclerosis and prominent thickened basement membrane. Two types of tubular changes were observed: focal necrosis of proximal tubules and focal atrophy of tubules surrounded by a thickened basement membrane. Mild fibrosis with few lymphocytes could be observed in the interstitium. A congenital reduction in the number of nephrons, related to a yet unknown pathological process may explain these morphological changes in part.

Notizen: Abstract Using thermally stimulated depolarization currents of PET-a electrets formed by the windowing polarization technique, the effect of the storage time previous to depolarization on the free charge relaxation, ρ, has been studied. It was noted that the temperature at which the relaxation maximum appears increases with the storage time, whereas the intensity of the maximum decreases. This behaviour depends on both the polarization temperature and the polarizing field. It was also observed that there is a polarization temperature, the optimal polarization temperature, for which the relaxation maximum temperature does not depend on the polarizing field.

Notizen: Abstract The purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that a higher hepatic glycogen level is associated with higher glucagon-induced hepatic glycogen depletion. Four groups of anesthetized rats received three injections (at times 0, 30, and 60 min) of glucagon (intravenously, 20 μg/kg). Among these groups, hepatic glycogen levels had previously been manipulated either by an overloading diet (Fast-refed), a reduction in food intake (1/2-fast), or exercise (75 min of running, 26 m/min, 0% grade). A fourth group had normal hepatic glycogen levels. A fifth group of rats was injected only with saline (0.9% NaCl). Liver glycogen concentrations were measured every 30 min during the course of the 90-min experiment, using liver samples obtained from the open liver biopsy technique. Plasma glucagon concentrations were significantly higher (P 〈 0.05) in the glucagon-injected groups than in the saline-injected group. As expected, liver glycogen levels were significantly higher (P 〈 0.01; 1.6-fold) in the Fast-refed group than in all other groups. Glucagon-induced decreases in liver glycogen concentrations were similar in Fast-refed than in normally fed and exercised rats when the overall 90-min period was considered. However, during the course of the last 30-min period, liver glycogen was significantly (P 〈 0.01) decreased only in the Fast-refed group. The Fast-refed, normally fed, and exercised groups had a similar glucagon-induced hyperglycemia that was significantly more elevated (P 〈 0.01) than glucose levels measured in the saline-injected group. Glucagon-induced reactive hyperinsulinemia was observed only in the Fast-refed and normally fed rats, and not in the exercised and 1/2-fast rats. It is concluded that supranormal levels of liver glycogen may be associated with a larger hyperglucagonemia-induced liver glycogen breakdown.

Notizen: Absorption spectra, and hence the dielectric properties, of poly(vinylidene fluoride-tri-fluoroethylene) copolymers have been obtained by far infrared spectroscopy in the frequency range 15-55 cm-1. We have studied the evolutions of the absorption coefficient and imaginary part of the dielectric constant as a function of poling field and copolymer composition. During the phase transition from form II to form I, the whole absorption presents a strong increase. This behavior is explained by polarizability changes at phase transition.

Notizen: Far infrared spectra of poly(vinylidene fluoride) and several copolymers (with hexafluoropropylene, chlorotrifluoroethylene, and tetrafluoroethylene) have been obtained between 15 and 55 cm-1. After correction of the interference phenomenon affecting the measurements, the absorption coefficient and the imaginary part of the dielectric constant have been calculated. We show how these parameters are affected by the chain conformation and copolymer composition. The behavior of the crystalline and amorphous phases have been studied. The effects of mechanical and electrical stresses are considered.

Notizen: The thermal and dielectric behaviors of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) copolymers near the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition are investigated for samples with 20, 25, 30, and 40 mol% trifluoroethylene (TrFE). The data suggest that the transition becomes continuous for a particular composition near 50 mol% TrFE. Experimental data are sensitive to thermal history (kinetics of crystallization, and kinetics and cycling over the structural transition). It is found that several anomalies are present at the structural change, and in particular the 30 mol% TrFE sample shows the most marked anomalies. These phenomena can be attributed to defects, but another possibility would be the existence of an intemediate supplementary phase. Both hypotheses are discussed.

Notizen: Thermally stimulated depolarization (TSD) measurements with superimposed “piezoelectric noise” allow us to identify the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition in vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (VDF/TrFE) copolymers with different molar ratios. In addition, a new transition which did not change the ferroelectric features of the material has also been detected. Long relaxation processes always accompany these transitions. By the initial-rise method we calculated the activation energies for these relaxations as 0.73 eV for the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric transition and 0.33 eV for the ferroelectric-to-ferroelectric one.

Notizen: Polarized and unpolarized far-infrared transmission spectra of poly(vinylidene fluoride) powders and films in the range 40-400 cm-1 are examined in terms of the α, β, and γ forms of this polymer. The bands which appear allow us to discuss various theoretical models. An interpretation of the polymer's configuration along and between chains including defects is proposed. Relations between the crystal form and treatments applied to the sample during its manufacture are demonstrated. In the same way the tttgtttg′ conformation previously reported by some authors for the γ form is corroborated.

Notizen: Far-infrared (FIR) Fourier-transform transmission spectra and x-ray diagrams of poly(vinylidene fluoride) films are examined in terms of poling-field action on the crystalline phase (α and β forms) and on the amorphous phase. We show that the poling field induces an increase of crystallinity in the α phase as well as in the β phase, and for the latter an orientation of dipoles in the field direction. For samples containing a mixture of phases α and β we note an α to β phase transition, a rotation of the dipoles in the β phase, and an increase of the crystallinity of the sample. Part of the β phase is generated from the amorphous phase.
