Notes: [Auszug] The catalytic subunit of the neuronal Cdc2-like kinase has been isolated previously9'11 13. Using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we have now cloned the p25 regulatory subunit by 3'- and 5'-RACE (rapid amplification of cDNA ends). The longest PCR fragment isolated did not extend to an ...

Notes: Abstract Recently, Mandelbrot has encountered and numerically investigated a probability densityp d (t) on the nonnegative reals, where, 0〈D〈1. This density has Fourier transform 1/f d (-is), wheref d (z)=−Dz d γ(−D, z) and γ(·.·) is an incomplete gamma function. Previously, Darling had met this density, but had not studied its form. We expressf d (z) as a confluent hypergeometric function, then locate and approximate its zeros, thereby improving some results of Buchholz. Via properties of Laplace transforms, we approximatep d (t) asymptotically ast→0+ and +∞, then note some implications asD→0+ and 1−.

Notes: Summary A recent note of Ih-Ching Hsu poses an unsolved problem, to wit, the general solution of the functional equation g(x1, x2) + g(φ1(x1), φ2(x2)) = g(x1, φ2(x2)) + g(φ1(x1),x2), where the φi are given functions. This short paper obtains the general solution. It gives conditions which imply that anycontinuous solution has form g1(x1) + g2(x2).

Notes: Abstract A generalization of theD [X] /D/1 queue is investigated, where independent and identically distributed (i.i.d) batches of customers arrive at a single-server queue periodically. The service requirement of a customer is a fixed constant equal for all the customers. In the time between two successive arrivals, the server can accommodate exactlyK≥1 customers. The queue size and the waiting time distributions for the infinite buffer queue are derived. Important numerical aspects are addressed and simple approximations for light and heavy traffic for various values ofK and Poisson distributed batches are proposed. Finally, the analysis for the finite queue is highlighted and its blocking probability derived.

Notes: Abstract An asymptotic expansion for large λ of functions I(λ) defined by definite integrals of the form $$I(\lambda ) = \mathop \smallint \limits_0^\infty h(\lambda t)f(t)dt$$ is obtained in the case where h(t)=O(exp(-βt p )) as t→∞ with β, ϱ〉0. To obtain the expansion for such integral transforms, I(λ) is first represented as a contour integral involving M [h; z], the Mellin transform of the kernel h(t) evaluated at z, and M[f; 1-z], the Mellin transform of the function f(t) evaluated at 1-z. By assuming a rather general asymptotic expansion for f(t) near t=0, it is shown that M[f; 1-z] can be continued into the right-half plane as a meromorphic function with poles that can be located and classified. The desired asymptotic expansion of I is then obtained by systematically moving the contour in its integral representation to the right. Each term in the expansion arises as a residue contribution corresponding to a pole of M[f; 1-z]. It is then shown how the expansion, originally found for large positive λ, can be extended to complex λ. Finally several examples are considered which illustrate the scope of our expansion theorems.

Notes: Antibodies to both the C-terminal and the N-terminal regions of the 34 kd serinethreonine specific protein kinase, p34cdc2, were used to study the distribution of this protein in dividing cells and isolated chromosomes of the Indian muntjac. p34cdc2 was found to be present throughout the cytoplasm of dividing cells. In addition, a portion of cellular p34cdc2 was localized to the centrosome, kinetochore, and intercellular bridge and along kinetochore-to-pole microtubules during cell division. Tubulin-denuded metaphase kinetochores retained their association with p34cdc2. The detection of p34cdc2 within a variety of domains of the mitotic apparatus, in addition to the previous reported association with the centrosome [Bailly et al., EMBO J. 8:3985-3995, 1989; Raibowol et al., Cell 57:393-401, 1989] suggests that p34cdc2 may play a role in events associated with anaphases A and B as well as with the transition between interphase and mitosis.
