    Notes: Summary Investigations on young Japanese larch trees growing on a heterogeneous site, have revealed significant linear correlations between the height of the trees and concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and ash in the needles, but only doubtfully so in the case of calcium. Analysis of the multiple regression of height on the concentrations of these nutrients suggests that only the contributions made by nitrogen and potassium are significant and a regression equation relating height to the concentration of these two nutrients in the needles has been calculated. The function 123.27% N + 188.69% K − 180.91 provides an estimate of tree height with a standard error of ± 40.9 cm and with a highly significant multiple correlation coefficient of .916. It is argued from these results that, under the conditions of the experiment and the range of concentrations encountered, the height growth of the trees is limited by deficiencies in both nitrogen and potassium.

    Notes: The participation of acrosin in mammalian sperm penetration through the zona pellucida has been amply debated. In this paper we report the immunolocalization - by silver enhanced immunogold technique using ACRO-8C10 monoclonal antibody to human acrosin - of proacrosin/acrosin on ejaculated rabbit spermatozoa incubated in vitro in a capacitating medium and on spermatozoa recovered from the perivitelline space. After incubation in a capacitating medium, four different patterns were observed: (1) no labeling on acrosome intact spermatozoa; (2) labeling on the rim of the head; (3) labeling on the whole acrosome area; and (4) no labeling on acrosome reacted spermatozoa. At the start of incubation, spermatozoa with pattern 1 were the most abundant, whereas at the end of the 32 h incubation period, patterns 2 and 3 were the most frequent. On the other hand, 625 perivitelline spermatozoa were recovered from 17 fertilized rabbit eggs, of which 26% were labeled with the anti-acrosin monoclonal antibody ACRO-8C10 in two different areas: (1) only on the equatorial region; and (2) only on the postacrosomal area. These results are consistent with the idea that proacrosin/acrosin remains associated to the acrosome reacted spermatozoa for long periods of time, and that proacrosin/acrosin associated to perivitelline spermatozoa could be responsible for the second penetration of fresh rabbit eggs by perivitelline spermatozoa. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: A number of mammalian sperm plasma membrane antigens have been implicated as playing a functional role in sperm-egg interaction, by virtue of the fact that antibodies against these antigens interfere with fertilization. Two such muse sperm plasma membrane antigens are M42, a 200/220 kD glycoprotein doublet, and M5, a 150-160 kD glycoprotein. We show that both of these antigens are concentrated on the posterior region of caudal epididymal and capacitated mouse sperm heads and are relatively diffusible, as determined by fluorescence recovery after photobleaching measurements (D = 3-8 × 10-9 cm2/s with ∼ 23% diffusing). Crosslinking of these antigens with bivalent antibodies causes them to redistribute into the anterior region (acrosomal crescent) of the sperm head. In contrast, we describe a third antigen, P220, which is also localized to the posterior region of the sperm head on caudal epididymal sperm but which exhibits very little diffusion and does not redistribute upon crosslinking. Bivalent anti-M42 blocks the ZP3-induced acrosome reaction. We have found that monovalent Fab fragments of anti-M42 do not block the ZP3-induced acrosome reaction, but that inhibition is restored by addition of a second antibody which crosslinks the Fabs. Thus, crosslinking is required for both inhibition of the acrosome reaction and redistribution. This suggests that redistribution of antigen away from the posterior region of the head may be part of the mechanism of inhibition of the ZP3-induced acrosome reaction. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
