Notes: C2H2 is prepared in the 2030000 (five quanta of C–H stretch) vibrational state and photodissociated by 243.135 nm photons that also probe the H photofragments via (2+1) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The production of H atoms is greatly enhanced upon rovibrational excitation. The REMPI action spectrum shows the characteristic features of a Σu+–Σg+ band and mimics the absorption spectrum, except that the R(13) line intensity is an order of magnitude higher than that expected for a Boltzmann distribution. The maximum translational energy of the H atoms obtained from dissociation of the regularly distributed rotational states is 0.67±0.10, whereas for R(13) it is 1.34±0.10 eV. The observed intensities and linewidths indicate the existence of two photodissociation pathways following the preparation of C2H2, where the C2H fragment is produced in two different states. In the R(13) pathway an additional bent state is prepared, or an accidental coincidence resonance is involved. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Two all-organic complexes, MC+TCNQ and BBDN+TCNQ, with electrical bistable states at room temperature have been discovered. The resistivity of these thin films prepared in vacuum can be transferred from high to low under a voltage of few volts. The transition time is 〈100 ns. Therefore, both materials are suitable for making write-once read-only memories. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Currently there are no adequate control measures for the cotton fungal diseases Verticillium wilt and Fusarium wilt, which are important factors limiting yield under certain conditions. In this study the gene encoding a Gastrodia anti-fungal protein was introduced into three cultivars of coloured cotton using the method of pollen-tube pathway transformation, with the purpose of obtaining transgenic plants with improved resistance to wilt. Of the 121 herbicide-resistant cotton plants two, LB-5-8 and ZB-1-49, were scored as transgenic based on Southern blot, RT-PCR analysis and in vitro anti-fungal activity assay. Field analysis demonstrated that the transgenic lines LB-5-8 and ZB-1-49 possess an increased resistance to wilt. After 2 years of breeding, the progeny of LB-5-8 and ZB-1-49 lines still showed a stable and strong resistance to Verticillium wilt. Lines with high levels of resistance to Verticillium wilt obtained from the present study may be widely planted and help to reduce the future impact of cotton wilt on cotton production resulting in increased yields.

Notes: The study of diffusion and permeation of methane, nitrogen, and helium in miscible blends of poly(styrene-stat-acrylonitrile) (PSAN) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) at 35-140°C shows that permeation coefficients (P) of helium followed the linear logarithmic mixing rule. Positive deviations from the linear logarithmic mixing rule were observed for permeation and diffusion coefficients (D) of methane and nitrogen below the glass transition temperature (Tg). The deviations decreased with increasing temperature and disappeared above Tg. The experimental results were analyzed by free volume and activated state theories. The Arrnenius plots of log D or log P vs. the reciprocal of temperature exhibited discontinuities in the glass transition region for all gases and blend compositions. The discontinuities are caused by large thermal expansion coefficient differences between the rubbery and glassy states of PSAN and PMMA. The sorption of methane in 50/50 PSAN/PMMA has dual-mode characteristics below Tg.

Notes: Gas diffusion through miscible blends of polystyrene (PS) with poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) and poly(styrene-stat-acrylonitrile) (PSAN) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is studied from temperatures below the corresponding lower critical solution temperature (LCST) to temperatures above. The Arrhenius equation describes the temperature dependence of diffusion coefficients of pure components. Diffusion coefficients of methane in the 20/80 PS/PVME blend also follow the Arrhenius equation in the temperature ranges above and below their corresponding LCST; however, discontinuity is observed in the LCST region. In contrast to the PS/PVME blend, discontinuity in the LCST region is not obvious for nitrogen and methane in the 50/50 PSAN/PMMA blend. These phenomena are discussed in terms of free volume and morphology changes in the LCST region.
