Notes: The pressure effect on the superconducting transition temperature (dTc/dP) has been measured for Dy1−xPrxBa2Cu3O7−δ with x=0, 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, and 0.3. Although the Tc suppression by Pr is in a different fashion for Y1−xPrxBa2Cu3O7−δ and Dy1−xPrxBa2Cu3O7−δ, the dTc/dP is similar in these two systems, with respect to x. The measured dTc/dP is positive at small x but becomes negative for x≥0.2 which is associated with the pressure effect on the normal-state resistivity (1/R)(dR/dP). The positive (1/R)(dR/dP) at x≥0.2 indicates that the number of carriers is decreasing under pressure and it supports the picture of hole localization through the hybridization of Pr-4f and O-2p bands. The mechanical pressure has a negative effect on Tc for x≥0.2, but chemical pressure has a positive effect on Tc according to the results of chemical substitution. This suggests that the large R (=rare earth element) may possibly reduce the Pr-O distance, and increase the hybridization of Pr-4f and O-2p bands.

Notes: Current–voltage (I–V) characteristics of Pr0.5Sr0.3Ca0.2MnO3 are measured at different temperatures and different fields. Our data of I–V curves show a crossover from linear to nonlinear behavior at the temperature lower than the charge ordering temperature. New findings in this work include (i) abrupt jumps/drops of voltage in each I–V curve below 100 K and (ii) an enhancement of magnetoresistance (MR) ratio from 15% to 20% which is associated with the unusual voltage jumps/drops in I–V curves. The enhancement of MR ratio evidences the existence of an intermediate state between the charge ordering state and the charge ordering breakdown state. Most importantly, the existence of such intermediate state provides a new route to achieve a low field colossal magnetoresistance for future applications of spintronics. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Current–voltage (I–V) relations of Nd0.5(Ca,Sr)0.5MnO3 are investigated near its percolation threshold. Resistivity and I–V relations reveal the unstable nature of Nd0.5(Ca,Sr)0.5MnO3. A large slope change in the I–V curve is observable for low (I〈15 mA) applied current by manipulating the applied magnetic field at 85 K. Our results indicate that the external applied current can assist not only an insulator to metal transition but also a metal to insulator transition. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High quality Y3Fe5O12/Gd3Ga5O12 (YIG/GGG) superlattices have been grown on (111)GGG substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The superlattices are investigated with the thickness of the YIG layer varied from six to one unit cells while keeping the GGG layer fixed at one unit cell. The thicknesses of the YIG and GGG layers are confirmed with grazing angle x-ray reflectivity (GAXR). The good quality of the samples is indicated by the small interface roughness, no more than 6 A(ring), also measured with GAXR. While the magnetization of the samples decreases when the thickness of the YIG layer is decreased, the superlattice remains magnetic even when the YIG layer is only one unit cell. Ferrimagnetic resonance indicates that there exists a surface anisotropy favoring in-plane magnetization. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background: Xiao-qing-long-tang (XQLT sho-seiru-to), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used to treat patients with bronchial asthma in Oriental countries for several centuries. However, the therapeutic mechanisms of this Chinese medicine remain a matter of considerable debate. Therefore, a series of experiments using ovalbumin-sensitized guinea pigs was performed to elucidate the possible antiasthmatic effect of XQLT. Methods: The effect of XQLT on ovalbumin-induced airway inflammation in a guinea pig model of allergic asthma was examined, and early and late asthmatic responses were measured in terms of airway resistance and extent of eosinophil infiltration. Furthermore, the bronchorelaxing effect of XQLT was measured in isolated guinea pig trachea. Results: XQLT significantly inhibited the antigen-induced immediate asthmatic response (IAR) and late asthmatic response (LAR) in actively sensitized guinea pigs. Cumulative administration of XQLT caused concentration-dependent relaxation of the carbachol-precontracted guinea pig trachea. The bronchorelaxing effect of XQLT was reversed by ICI-118551, a selective β2-adrenoceptor antagonist. Furthermore, examination of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) revealed that XQLT significantly suppressed the increase in eosinophils (24 h after antigen challenge) in the airway. In addition, XQLT significantly attenuated the increase in eosinophils at 1, 6, 24, 48, and 72 h after antigen challenge when it was administered once daily from the day of sensitization to the day of challenge. Histopathologic examination results showed that XQLT suppressed eosinophil infiltration into lung tissue. Conclusions: These results demonstrate that the antiasthmatic effects of XQLT appear to be partly mediated by stimulation of β2-adrenoceptors, leading to bronchorelaxation, and that XQLT inhibits the infiltration of eosinophils into the airway. Thus, XQLT may be useful for the prevention or treatment of asthma.

Notes: Summary Acupuncture at the Zhongwan acupoint has been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine to relieve symptoms of diabetes mellitus. Our study investigated the effect on plasma glucose of electroacupuncture applied at the Zhongwan acupoint in rat diabetic models. Plasma concentrations of insulin, glucagon and β-endorphin were also determined using radioimmunoassay. A decrease in plasma glucose was observed in rats after electroacupuncture (15 Hz, 10 mA) for 30 min at the Zhongwan acupoint. This was observed in normal rats and rat models with Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. No significant effect on plasma glucose was observed in rat models with Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus; neither the streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats nor the genetic (BB/W) rats. Further, the hypoglycaemic action of electroacupuncture stimulation disappeared in rats with insulin-resistance induced by an injection of human long-acting insulin repeated daily to cause the loss of tolbutamide-induced hypoglycaemia. An insulin-related action can thus be hypothesised. This hypothesis is supported by an increase in plasma insulin-like immunoreactivity after electroacupuncture stimulation in normal rats. Participation of glucagon was ruled out because there was no change in plasma glucagon-like immunoreactivity resulting from electroacupuncture stimulation. In addition to an increase in plasma β-endorphin-like immunoreactivity, the plasma glucose lowering action of electroacupuncture stimulation at Zhongwan acupoint was abolished by naloxone in a sufficient dose to block opioid receptors. Thus we suggest that electroacupuncture stimulation at the Zhongwan acupoint induces secretion of endogenous β-endorphin which reduces plasma glucose concentration in an insulin-dependent manner. Notes: Abstract The slip behaviour of the zirconia/colloidal zirconia binder sol system has been characterized by rheological measurements. The effects of slip solid loading and methylcellulose polymer addition on rheology and on rheology as a function of ageing time have been examined. The optimum conditions for suitable slips used in the dip-coating process have been determined from the rheological properties of the slips.
