Notes: We present the circuit design of a unit for medium-frequency modulated direct-current (dc) reactive sputter deposition of electrical insulators. The unit is connected in series between a commercial dc sputtering power supply and a sputtering cathode (target). It modulates the voltage applied to the sputtering cathode in a pulsed, asymmetric bipolar fashion. The pulsing effectively eliminates the problem of arcing at the target surface. The simple circuit is a low-cost, flexible alternative to commercially available units. To demonstrate its utility, we deposited a film of 5 SiO2/TiO2 bilayers, forming a highly reflective dielectric optical mirror with a stop band centered near a wavelength in air of 600 nm. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe modifications to an Oxford Model TLE 400 dilution refrigerator permitting measurements of microwave response at X-band. Coupling to the cavity is accomplished with a Gordon coupler involving a 1/4-in. access hole and a 1/4-in. dielectric rod running coaxial with the circular waveguide which feeds the microwave cavity. The rod extends through a vacuum load lock and may be removed. A stainless-steel sample insertion rod may then be inserted allowing top loading of specimens directly into the cavity; the samples themselves are attached to a copper fixture, involving a combination of left- and right-hand threads which may be reversibly screwed into and out of the bottom of the cavity. Preliminary surface impedance studies of s-wave superconductors (Sn, Zn, and In) and the heavy fermion UPt3 superconductor have been performed with this spectrometer.

Notes: A versatile, compact, constant current-voltage, bipolar power source for quasi-static or derivative measurements of the characteristics of superconducting junctions has been developed. The circuitry is based on a negative feedback strategy that is effective in maintaining constant current-voltage behavior at the junction itself and all lead resistances are included in the feedback loop. Constant currents and voltages can be delivered of up to ±0.5 A and ±0.75 V, respectively. Both fast and slow sweeps, as well as a single sweep mode, are available in variable ranges. The single sweep feature is used to avoid heating effects in low resistance junctions which are not in good thermal contact with a thermal reservoir (e.g., liquid 4 He).
