Notes: We have built a millimeter wave polarimeter which measures wave polarization parameters: the polarization angle, and the ellipticity including field spin direction in an evacuated high-power system. The polarimeter was applied to diagnose the 1 MW level electron-cyclotron plasma heating system at 110 GHz for the DIII-D tokamak. We have observed the time-dependent behavior of the gyrotrons and have characterized and calibrated the high-power transmission system which consists of grooved mirror polarizers, miter bends, switches, and corrugated wave guides. This article describes the principle of operation and the design method of the polarimeter and the examples of measurements. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Relict eclogites and associated high-pressure rocks are present in the Eastern Segment of the SW Swedish gneiss region (the tectonic counterpart of the Parautochthonous Belt of the Canadian Grenville). These rocks give evidence of Sveconorwegian eclogite facies metamorphism and subsequent pervasive reworking and deformation at granulite and amphibolite facies conditions. The best-preserved eclogite relics suggest a clockwise P–T –t history, beginning in the amphibolite facies, progressing through the eclogite facies, decompressing and partially reequilibrating through the high- and medium-pressure granulite facies, before cooling through the amphibolite facies. Textures demonstrate the former coexistence of the plagioclase-free assemblages garnet+clinopyroxene+quartz+rutile+ilmenite, garnet+clinopyroxene+ kyanite+rutile, and garnet+kyanite+quartz+rutile. The former existence of omphacite is evidenced by up to 45 vol.% plagioclase expelled as small grains within large clinopyroxene. Matrix plagioclase is secondary and occurs expelled from clinopyroxene or in fine-grained, granulite facies reaction domains formed during resorption of garnet and kyanite. Garnet shows preserved prograde growth zoning with rimward increasing pyrope content, decreasing spessartine content and decreasing Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratio, but is partly resorbed and reequilibrated at the rims. P–T estimates from microdomains with clinopyroxene+plagioclase+quartz+garnet indicate pressures of 9.5–12 kbar and temperatures of 705–795 °C for a stage of the granulite facies decompression. The preservation of the prograde zoning suggests that the rocks did not reside at these high temperatures for more than a few million years, and chemical disequilibrium and ‘frozen’ reaction textures indicate heterogeneous reaction progress and overstepping of reactions during the decompression through the granulite facies. Together these features suggest a rapid tectonic exhumation. The eclogite relics occur within a high-grade deformation zone with WNW–ESE stretching and associated oblique normal-sense, top-to-the-east (sensu lato) displacement, suggesting that extension was a main cause for the decompression and exhumation. Probable tectonic scenarios for this deformation are Sveconorwegian late-orogenic gravitational collapse or overall WNW–ESE extension.

Notes: Mafic granulite, garnet amphibolite and charnockite occur in the southwest Swedish part of the Baltic Shield. This part is generally considered to be the continuation of the Grenville collisional belt in Canada. The area with granulite facies rocks, the Southwest Swedish Granulite Region (SGR), is considerably larger than previously thought. The SGR is bounded to the east and west by two major tectonic zones. The first quantitative age data and P–T determinations for the high-grade metamorphism in the SGR are presented.Conventional geothermobarometry was applied to mafic granulites from five localities. The estimated P–T conditions for the peak of metamorphism range from 705°C and 8.1 kbar at Hallandsås in the south, to 770°C and 10.5 kbar at Ullared in the north (medium- to high-P granulite facies conditions). Sm–Nd geochronology on minerals from the mafic granulites at Hallandsås and Ullared give late Sveconorwegian (Grenville) ages of 907 ± 12 and 916 ± 11 Ma for the high-grade metamorphism, which is considerably younger than previously thought. Our results stress the hitherto underestimated importance of the late Sveconorwegian high-grade metamorphism in the southwestern part of the Baltic Shield.

Notes: We report optically pumped lasing at λ∼3.4 μm from an integrated absorber structure in which the electrons confined in the InAs quantum wells recombine with holes in adjacent InGaAsSb layers to provide the gain. This type-II laser exhibits an estimated photon-to-photon conversion rate of ∼24% at 85 K. The self-consistent empirical pseudopotential method calculations suggest that Coulomb attraction can lead to a strong enhancement in carrier overlap, and the resulting small shift in transition energy is consistent with that observed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In a double blind manner 38 children with hayfever due to birch pollinosis and weighing 25–80 kg (mean 45 kg) were treated with either astemizole 5 mg/d or placebo for 2 wks before the start of the birch pollen season. At the start of the season all children were given astemizole in doses increasing every week, i. e. 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg/d. This part of the study was blind in that patients did not know the actual dose administered and the physiscians did not know the plasma concentrations of the drug. Blood was drawn before the start of the medication and after each week in the single blind phase of the trial. Despite the long half-life of astemizole. prophylactic treatment gave no improvement during the first week of the pollen season. Increasing daily doses from 0. 1 mg/kg body weight gave i'ewer hayfever symptoms up to 0. 25 mg/kg, corresponding to a plasma concentration of 4 ng/ml of astemizole plus hydroxyluted metabolites. Still higher doses up to 40 mg/d, corresponding to 0. 5–1. 6 mg/kg/d. gave littie improvement. Sedation and other side effects did not increase with higher doses. Analyses of various laboratory tests did not reveal any abnormalities that were judged to be a result of the medication. However, liver enzymes increased during the treatment period although all values were within normal limits. Thus, astemizole is safe even in higher doses, but neither prophylactic treatment nor daily doses above 0. 25 mg/kg/d improve treatment results in hayfever. The statistical lime series model used correlating symptoms with pollen exposure allowed a good evaluation of the dose-response of astemizole in hayfever despite the limited number of patients

Notes: During the season 65 children, 7–19) yours old, with conjunctivitis due to birch pollinosis were treated with eyedrops, either levocabastine b. i. d. (+ placebo b. i. d.) (n=32), or cromoglycate q. i. d. (n= 33). Beclomethasone was given to children with rhinitis. Symptoms of conjunctivitis and sedation as well as pollen counts were assessed daily. Blood was drawn before and at the end of the treatment. When mean weekly scores for symptoms of conjunctivitis or sedation were evaluated there were no significant differences between the treatments. A dynamic statistical method correlating symptoms with pollen counts on the same and previous days was applied showing that the children treated with levocabastine had a quicker reduction of their conjunctivis symptoms after a pollen peak (p 〈 0.05) but were tired for a longer period (p 〈 0.01). Other side effects were few and similar in the groups. No significant changes were seen in the blood safety data. The differences between the groups were small, and from a clinical point of view the conclusion is that levocabastine taken twice daily is as effective and as free of side effects as cromoglycate taken 4 times a day.

Notes: The prevalence and level of sensitivity to indoor allergens were studied in relation to current exposure at home in 124 children with perennial asthma living in three climatic zones of Sweden. The house dust mite (HDM) allergen levels were higher in the South than in the North (p 〈 0.001), while cat and dog allergen levels tended to be higher in the North than the South (n. s.). Thirty-four percent of the children were sensitive to the HDM Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, as determined by IgE antibodies in vitro, 27% were sensitive to D. farinae, 57% to cat and 55% to dog. Sensitivity to HDM was significantly more prevalent in Southern, than in Central and Northern Sweden (p=0.001) where the children were more often sensitive to pets (cat p=0.005, dog p= 0.002). A significant association between the concentration of Der p I and DerfI in the house dust and both the prevalence of sensitivity to HDM and the IgE antibody levels against mites was found even at concentrations well below the commonly suggested risk level for sensitisation of 2 μg/g dust. No relationship was found between pet allergen concentration in the home dust and sensitivity to pets, possibly because of exposure outside home, e. g. in schools and meeting places for leisure activities. Similarly, there was no consistent association between the level of mite or pet allergen exposure at home and asthma severity as judged by symptom and medication score. The study indicates that there is no threshold value for sensitisation to mite allergens in asthmatic children, and therefore, dust allergen levels at home should be kept as low as possible in homes of children at risk for asthma.

Notes: Thirty-nine children with birch pollinosis were given immunotherapy (IT) for 3 years with a purified, characterized and biologically standardized pollen preparation made from either birch or a mixture of birch, alder and hazel. Levels of IgE antibodies against birch, alder and oak increased early during IT (P 〈 0.01) and then decreased below the initial level (P 〈 0.01). Birch-specific IgG antibodies also increased (P 〈 0.01) but not as rapidly as birch-specific IgE antibodies and the levels remained increased throughout IT. There were only weak correlations between immunochemical findings before IT or during early IT on one hand and the improvement during IT on the other hand. The ratio birch-specific IgG: IgE after 1.5 and 2.5 years of IT correlated with symptom scores the following season (P 〈 0.01). In 60% of the children below 13 years of age, new IgE specificities developed during IT as demonstrated with crossed radio-immunoelectrophoresis. No such new IgE specificities were found in older children. These ‘new sensitivities’ did not appear to have any clinical implication.

Notes: This was a multicentre, double-blind, randomized group comparative study in which 77 children, aged 6–16 years, received 2% nedocromil sodium eye drops and 72 received placebo, one drop into each eye twice daily. The treatment period was 4 weeks, covering the peak birch pollen season. Prior to the start or the season, patients who had mended the clinic the previous 2 years because of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC) to birch pollen, entered a one week baseline period during which symptoms were assessed, diary cards completed, and routine sampling of blood and urine earned out. The double-blind treatment period then commenced at the onset of the birch pollen season. Patients parents kept daily diary record cards of eye symptom severity and concomitant therapy. Conjunctivitis was mild in both treatment groups but nedocromil sodium was more effective than placebo in controlling symptoms. During the 2–3 weeks of peak pollen counts, this therapeutic effect was statistically significant for itching (P 〈0–01), watering (P 〈0.05) and total symptom score (P 〈0.01), but was not significant for grittiness (P= 0.08) or redness (P = 0.06). Global opinions of efficacy showed no difference between treatments, due to a high placebo effect (however, the diary card data indicated a significant improvement with nedocromil sodium). We therefore conclude that nedocromil sodium 2% eye drops, administered twice daily, is an effective treatment for SAC in children.
