Notes: A stress-operated memory device consisting of an ellipsoidal magnetic particle array and an electrostrictive grid is proposed. In the device, the magnetic state of the particle can be controlled only by the magnetostriction effect. Each particle is located at the intersection of the grid and has an in-plane uniaxial anisotropy. A pair of electric contacts is connected to the end of each wire. In the writing process, the driving voltages are simultaneously applied to two pairs of the selected contacts. This allows to apply a local electric field whose direction and amplitude can be regulated by varying the voltage intensity and polarity. The exerting stress on the magnetic particle results in the linear magnetostriction and hence an additional anisotropy energy in the particle. The in-plane total energy minimum, corresponding to the magnetization direction, follows the local electric field. Consequently the magnetization of the single magnetic particle located at the intersection can therefore be selectively switched. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We investigated iodine doping in mercury cadmium telluride (Hg1−xCdxTe) grown by direct alloy growth using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition, with isopropyl-iodine (IPI) as the dopant source. The memory effect in iodine doping is much smaller than that in indium doping. We confirmed by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) measurement that sharp dopant transitions (0.2 μm/decade) were obtained by switching off the IPI during growth. The electron concentration at 77 K was linearly proportional to the dopant partial pressure from 5×1015 to 2×1018 cm−3. We confirmed by SIMS that 20%–100% of the iodine was active as a donor. The Hall coefficient shows classical n-type extrinsic behavior from 20 to 300 K. The electron mobility was as high as that in an indium-doped sample. The layer with a Cd fraction of x=0.23, doped to 5×1016 cm−3, exhibited a mobility of 4.7×104 cm2/V s at 77 K and 6.9×104 cm2/V s at 20 K. The iodine in the HgCdTe layers was thermally stable. We found no variation in the electrical properties and the iodine depth profile after annealing at 400 °C for 2 h.

Notes: We have found the effects of HgTe layers on dislocations of (111)B HgCdTe layers grown on Si substrates by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The dislocations in HgCdTe layers were reduced by inserting thin HgTe layers between HgCdTe and CdTe buffer layers. Using this method, the dislocation density of 2.3×106 cm−2 was obtained, which is less than quarter that of HgCdTe layers without HgTe. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The crystallographic texture of heat-treated Cu thin films and its effects on stress-migration resistance were studied as a function of film thickness within a range of 50–900 nm. All as-deposited films had (111) texture. After heat treatment at 723 K, texture transition from (111) to (100) was observed in films of thickness greater than 300 nm. The (111) texture films after heat treatment showed severe stress migration; in contrast, the (100) texture films showed no noticeable stress migration. The observed stress-migration resistance in the (100) texture films can be attributed to the absence of twins and to lower thermal stress as compared with the (111) texture films. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Transverse magneto-optical Kerr hysteresis loops were observed on pure iron single crystals. They exhibit a steplike behavior of magnetization different from that of the bulk. The hysteresis loop is compared with those magnetization curves which are obtained on the same sample by x-ray resonant magnetic scattering measurement and by the vibrating sample magnetometry. The magnetization process is discussed in terms of the components of magnetization parallel and perpendicular to magnetic field. The nature of the steplike magnetization was revealed to be characterized by the wall displacement of fracturized magnetic domains in the surface region. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Mass production of rotifers is essential as live food during the larval rearing season, but a major problem of rotifer culture is unpredictable culture collapse. If mass-produced rotifers could be kept alive at low temperature for an extended period of time, they could be supplied as live food to cultured marine fish larvae without interruption. Four experiments were performed to test this possibility in six strains of Brachionus plicatilis O. F. Müller and eight strains of Brachionus rotundiformis Tschugunoff. The results showed that: (1) B. rotundiformis strains were less tolerant to 4 °C than B. plicatilis strains. Among the B. rotundiformis strains, the strains known as SS type were the most susceptible and showed the lowest survival. (2) Exchange of culture media during the incubation at 4 °C in B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis resulted in higher survival than not changing the culture media, but there were no differences in the regression slope with or without changing the culture media. (3) Acclimation at 15 °C for 96 h for B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis before transfer to 4 °C resulted in higher survival rates than acclimation at 10 °C. (4) The combination of frequent exchange of culture media and acclimation significantly improved the survival of B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis compared with controls that were maintained at 4 °C without exchange of the culture media. Large-scale trials using B. plicatilis (Kamiura strain) cultured in 30-L tanks were conducted in a hatchery at a density of 2000–20 000 individuals mL−1. Rotifers were transferred directly from 25 °C to 4 °C. About 50% of the rotifers at 20 000 individuals mL−1 survived after 14 days at 4 °C. These preserved rotifers could be cultured at 20 °C, recovering within 4 days.

Notes: Intact ovarian follicles, obtained from untreated and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) treated Japanese yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata during different maturational stages, were incubated with radioactive [3H]pregnenolone, [3H]17-hydroxyprogesterone or [14C] androstenedione and steroid metabolites identified by thin layer chromatography (TLC) followed by recrystallization to constant specific activity. In untreated late vitellogenic (0 h) follicles, androstenedione was the major product with smaller amounts of testosterone and oestradiol-17α. In post-vitellogenic (12 h post-injection) intact follicles, androstenedione predominated, and although testosterone and oestradiol-17α were not produced, there were small amounts of 17, 20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20β-P) and 17,21-dihydroxy-4-pregnene-3, 20-dione (11-deoxycortisol). In HCG-treated fish, a steroidogenic shift resulted in the disappearance of testosterone and oestradiol-17 coinciding with the appearance of 17, 20β-P. During early and late final oocyte maturation FOM (24 and 36 h post-injection), there was a five- to seven-fold increase in the production of 17, 20β-P, whereas production of 11-deoxycortisol remained almost the same. During FOM, in addition to 17,20β-P, its 5β-reduced metabolite, 17,20β-dihydroxy-5β-pregnan-3-one (5β-17,20β-P) was synthesized, suggesting a decrease in maturation-inducing 17,20β-P activity. 17, 20β,21-Trihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (20β-S) was not synthesized by ovarian fragments in Japanese yellowtail at any maturational stage. The metabolites identified on TLC during FOM were tested to evaluate their maturation-inducing activity in an in vitro bioassay. Of the steroids tested, 17,20β-P was the most effective inducer of germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD), followed by 5β-17,20β-P. Timely synthesis of 17,20β-P immediately prior to and during FOM as well as its great potency in inducing GVBD in vitro supports the evidence for a physiological role of 17,20β-P as a maturation-inducing hormone in Japanese yellowtail.
