Notes: [Auszug] The donor-acceptor pair were cast in poly(methyl methacrylate) films. This copolymer has polyene groups along the main chain as well as the pendant phenyl units. It has a much stronger emission spectrum than polystyrene and is thus more suitable for using in energy transfer studies. The results ...

Notes: [Auszug] For homogeneous decomposition reactions which evolve volatile products and leave a residue, for example, the thermal decomposition of polymers, the thermobalance results are analysed in the following way (1) where (dC/dt) is the rate of fractional conversion, k is denned as the rate constant ...

Notes: The rate equations for the thermal decomposition of a polymer by a random scission reaction followed by rapid depolymerization of a constant number of monomer units from both fragments together with rapid evaporation of low molecular weight species are solved by using a different approach from that used by previous workers. The results obtained are more specific and differ slightly from previous treatments.

Notes: A survey is made of vinyl-type polymers in which there appear to be links more susceptible to scission (during thermal degradation) than the normal links. The presence of such links is indicated by an examination of the change in molecular weight during the course of the reaction. A theoretical expression is used which assumes that both normal, and weak link scission, are random processes. Apart from the polymers already known to have weak links, polystyrene, polyethylene, polymethylene, and polypropylene, it appears that poly(methyl methacrylate) also contains such links. It is suggested that an alternative explanation may account for the apparent presence of weak links in so many polymers.

Notes: A survey is made of the experimental and theoretical studies of the thermal degradation of poly(methyl methacrylate). The mechanism proposed by GORDON is shown to be incorrect. At 300°C the reaction causing complete depolymerisation of the fraction of a polymer sample which is stable at 270°C. is initiated at random in the polymer molecules. It is shown that care must be taken when interpreting percentage molecular weight versus percentage degradation plots as a guide to mechanism of a depolymerisation reaction.
