Notes: Summary Cases from the files of Action for Victims of Medical Accidents which had resulted in stillbirth, perinatal or neonatal death and long term mental or physical handicap were reviewed. In 41 cases there was both a detailed letter from the parents and an independent review by a senior obstetrician. The reviewer's main criticisms were of inadequate fetal heart monitoring, lack of involvement of senior staff and inadequate records. The fetal heart trace was missing in 7 cases and over half of the remaining 34 traces available were misinterpreted or not acted on. In 17 cases junior doctors failed to recognize fetal distress and managed a delivery that they did not have the experience to deal with. In a further 6 cases, senior staff were called but did not come. Records were criticized for being incomplete, illegible or missing. In a few cases unjustified alterations appeared to have been made. Women reported that on some occasions staff ignored their worries, were unsympathetic and gave too little information. Some parents also experienced considerable difficulty in obtaining a clear explanation of the nature and cause of their child's condition.

Notes: Abstract Plant height, light-saturated rates of photosynthesis (A max) and foliar nitrogen concentration (N 1) were measured forBartsia trixago under field conditions in Mallorca. All three variables were postively correlated, and were also positively related to the abundance of nitrogen-fixing legumes in the associated vegetation (putative host species).A max forB. trixago ranged from 7.7 to 18.8 μmol m-2 s-1; similar rates were measured for a second hemiparasiteParentucellia viscosa, and both species were within the range of rates measured for six putative hosts (10.6–19.2 μmol m-2 s-1). Fertilization of unattachedB. trixago plants with inorganic nitrogen (ammonium nitrate) elicited neither the growth nor the photosynthetic responses observed in plants considered to be parasitic on legumes and in receipt of an enriched organic nitrogen supply. Both hemiparasites had high diurnal leaf conductances (g s) (469–2291 mmol m-2 s-1) and were at the upper end of the range of those measured in putative hosts (409–879 mmol m-2 s-1). In contrast with the latter, high nocturnal rates ofg s were also recorded for the two hemiparasites (517–1862 mmol m-2 s-1). There was no clear relationship between eitherA max orN 1 and eitherg s, transpiration (E) or water use efficiency (A max/E) inB. trixago plants. The economics of water loss appear to be independent of both the supply of nitrogen from the host and autotrophic carbon fixation.

Notes: Abstract The behaviour of cells of the form Ag(s) |Ag7I4AsO4(s)|M(s), where Ag7I4AsO4 is a vitreous solid electrolyte with high silver ion conductivity and M is an inert anode such as platinum or stainless steel, has been investigated under different levels of d.c. polarisation. It has been shown that electrolytes of this type are not readily electrolysed, even under applications of large fields (despite the negligible impedance of the cathode). On the other hand, the anode is readily depolarised by water vapour, and the resulting cell current is related to the humidity of the gas in contact with it. The applicability of such cells for quantitative humidity determination by amperometry has been assessed.

Notes: Abstract The electrical and electrochemical properties of charge transfer complexes of iodine with o-tolidine, phenothiazine and N-methylphenothiazine have been investigated with a view to determining their suitability as electrodes in cells based on solid electrolytes. Discharge and polarization studies have shown that iodine electrodes based on phenothiazine and N-methylphenothiazine offer excellent prospects as practical cathodes.

Notes: Abstract Kinetics and mechanisms for the electrodeposition of lithium from propylene carbonate and PMMA gelled electrolytes were studied using chronoamperometric, cyclic voltammetric and chronopotentiometric methods at a nickel microelectrode. Nucleation and crystal growth models have been proposed for three salt systems. Exchange current densities, coulombic stripping efficiencies and lithium corrosion rates were evaluated.

Notes: High frequency dielectric measurements in the range 10 MHz to 10 GHz have been performed on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and its complexes with lithium perchlorate using time domain spectroscopy. Measurements were made over a wide polymer-to-salt composition range and in the temperature range 50-75°C. All samples were amorphous. A relaxation was observed for PEO and its complexes with LiClO4 in the GHz region and is attributed to the β (αa) relaxation arising from long-range segmental motion of the polymer or the ion-polymer complex. Good agreement was found between conductivity values determined by TDS and those quoted in the literature An increase in salt concentration in the polymer increases the distribution of relaxation times which may be explained in terms of increased intermolecular and intramolecular transient crosslinks. The dispersion amplitude (ε′0-ε′∫) has a maximum value between an O/Li ratio of 20:1 and 12:1 and shows a similar dependence on salt concentration as the conductivity.
