Notes: Intra- and inter-sample similarities for four populations of the annual grass weed Phalaris minor from Haryana state, India, were examined using inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) DNA markers. Levels of polymorphism within and between populations were low in comparison with values reported from other grassy weed species. Analysis of inter-population similarities allowed a partial differentiation of the four populations and of pairs of populations classified by cropping system. Analysis of the intra-population similarity data showed a weak but consistent and statistically significant negative correlation between the molecular similarity of seedlings and the physical distance between their mother plants over distances up to 40 m (the maximum separation tested) in all four populations. The consistency of the observed relationship between molecular similarity and physical separation, and the differences in cultivation practices at the four sites, suggested that the relationship may be a result of localized out-crossing, rather than an effect of localized seed rain. The results of the analyses are discussed in relation to the potential for evolution of multiple traits in the weed in response to changes in the wheat production system in the region.

Notes: Summary The effect of some sugars in different concentrations and some nitrogeneous organic constituents in 2% yeast extract (basal medium) on production of cyclopiazonic acid (CA) by Penicillium verrucosum var. cyclopium was studied at room temperature. Maximum CA production was observed after 14 days in a medium containing 2% yeast extract +2.5% sucrose. Ammonium lactate had a negative effect on the production of CA by the test culture. Nitrogeneous organic constituents such as peptone and tryptone did not enhance the yield of CA in the medium. After an initial drop in the pH, a general increase in pH was observed as the incubation time increased. Curdled milk was also found to be a suitable medium for the production of CA by the mold culture.

Notes: Summary A numerical soil moisture dynamics model was developed for; wheat crop using either observed or generated root length densities with root sink incorporating diminishing rate of water uptake by plant roots due to decreasing soil moisture in drying cycles and loss of absorptive power of roots due to ageing. The simulated soil moisture contents were overestimated by 6.0 and 9.6% on an overall basis by the model when observed and generated root length densities were used, respectively, in comparison to observed moisture contents. The model using generated root length densities simulated less water uptake in comparison with the model which utilized observed root length densities.

Notes: Cultivation of Trichoderma reesei QM 9414 on 3% (w/v) cellulose medium (C/N ratio = 8.5) produced 4.5 IU/ml celulase 180 hr at a cell growth of 8.0 g/liter (0.266 g cell/g cellulose). It corresponded to an average cellulase productivity 25.0 IU/liter/hr (3.5 IU/g cell/hr). In the same medium 9.5 g/liter cell mass (0.316 g cell/g cellulose), 6.2 IU/ml cellulase, and 38.75 IU/liter/hr (4.0 IU/g cell/hr) cellulase productivity could be obtained using pH cycling condition during cultivation. Cell mass, cellulase yield, and productivity were further increased to 10.0 g/liter, 7.2 IU/ml, and 44.0 IU/liter/hr (4.5 IU/g cell/hr), respectively, by simultaneous pH cycling and temperature profiling strategy. Results are described.
