Notes: We report a new type of paraneoplastic mixed bullous skin disease in a patient with a B-cell lymphoma associated with monoclonal IgM kappa paraproteinaemia. The patient’s clinical and histological features were reminiscent of bullous pemphigoid. Characterization of antiepidermal antibodies by immunoblotting and indirect immunoelectron microscopy demonstrated a novel pattern of reactivity: IgG antibodies were directed against desmoplakins I–II and BPAG2, and were associated with antidesmoglein 3 polyclonal IgM antibodies. Such an autoreactive pattern involving antidesmoplakins, anti-BPAG2 and antidesmoglein 3 antibodies has not been previously reported. It reflects the breakdown of tolerance to multiple epidermal antigens observed in some patients with malignancy.

Notes: Background  Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a potentially life-threatening multifocal neoplasm. Despite the significant decline in the incidence of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related KS with the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), some patients, even those with a good immune restoration, still have aggressive disease. Liposomal anthracyclines or combination chemotherapy are widely used but adverse effects limit their utilization. Objectives  We studied the efficacy and tolerance of docetaxel in the treatment of AIDS-related KS after pretreatment with anthracycline.Patients/methods and main outcome measure  A retrospective cohort study was done. Nine human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients were treated from 1997 to 2002 with docetaxel. Tumour response was evaluated using the AIDS Clinical Trial Group (ACTG) staging criteria. Clinical and biological toxicity was evaluated. AIDS status with HIV viral load and CD4 T-cell count were measured at the beginning and at the end of the treatment. Results  A major (complete or partial) response and a stabilization of the disease were demonstrated in seven and two patients, respectively. Grade 4 neutropenia and thrombocytopenia were observed in four of nine and one of nine patients, respectively. One patient died after sepsis. Conclusions  Docetaxel has a good and rapid efficacy in anthracycline-pretreated patients with severe AIDS-related KS. Phase II/III trials should be done to compare docetaxel with liposomal anthracyclines as a first-line treatment.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR-Brazil produced the first alcohol-powered automobiles after 1980, following a National Plan for reducing oil imports. They proved to be a great success: today 99 per cent of all manufactured vehicles for the internal market run on alcohol. Tropical countries make their sugar and alcohol from ...

Notes: Abstract Piezoelectric properties of quartz and quartz-like materials are strongly related to the impurity content in the crystals and, more especially, to their hydroxyl group (−OH) content. This work has been devoted to the determination of the spatial distribution of this impurity in as-grown crystals of gallium phosphate, GaPO4. The investigation was undertaken by infrared spectroscopy from eight samples with different growth conditions and completed by thermally stimulated current/relaxation map analysis techniques. The results allow the best growth parameters to be defined, leading to crystals with the lowest −OH impurity content.

Notes: Abstract The manual harvest of sugar cane requires the burning of its foliage. This burning has strongly increased in Brazil after the National Alcohol Program was started which substituted automobile gasoline engines for alcohol engines. Presently, the source strength per unit area of this rural pollution is comparable to the well-known biomass burning source in Amazonia. The observed concentrations of CO and O3 in the rural area of the state of São Paulo during the 1988 burning season were twice as large as those reported from an aircraft experiment of 1985 for biomass burnings of the tropical rain forest. Results are reported from airplane measurements and from three fixed ground stations. Mixing ratios of ozone and carbon monoxide in the height range below 6 km are normally less than 40 and 100 ppbv, (parts per billion by volume), respectively, in the absence of burnings. A strong O3 and CO layer was observed during the burning period with peak concentrations of 80 ppbv of ozone and 580 ppbv of CO at about 2 km. The concentrations of CH4 and CO2 were also large, 1756 ppbv and 409 ppmv, respectively, at 1500 m. During the dry season period of the experiment, the ground based O3 average diurnal variations obtained at the rural sites were practically identical to the typical urban variation observed at São José dos Campos, with daytime ozone values between 45 and 60 ppbv. A second three-day airplane excursion to the surgar cane fields in the wet season of 1989 has produces results to be contrasted with the dry (burning) season of 1988 and 1989. Carbon monoxide concentrations were below 100 ppbv at all heights and ozone concentrations were around 30–40 ppbv. The maximum daytime concentrations at the ground station Bauru was 25 ppbv of O3, and at Jaboticabal it was 35 ppbv of O3, only one half of what was observed in the dry season.
