Notes: Optimum conditions for the preparation of a hydrolysate from a slurry made with whole potatoes were studied. The spray-dried powder was light yellow, slightly sweet, relatively bland in taste, readily soluble in water, had a dextrose equivalent of 26, and contained 8.4% protein, 86% carbohydrate and 6.0% ash. Most of the amino acids from the potato were in the hydrolysate. Substitution of 33% of the sucrose with an equal weight of hydrolysate in chocolate milk resulted in only a slight loss in desirability. A commercial dehydrated vegetable soup mix containing up to an equal weight of the hydrolysate showed no decrease in the desirability of the product.

Notes: We have developed a set of four synthetic standards for the rare earth and high field strength elements designed for use in the determination of those elements in silicates. The base material is a glass nominally at the eutectic of the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 ternary system. The nominal doping level was 2 wt% of the elements as oxides. To avoid problems associated with peak interference, the elements were doped in four separate glasses.

Notes: Background Our aim was to demonstrate that the treatment of individual cases is effective, but not sufficient, to control endemic Pediculus capitis, and that eradication of the epidemiologic school focus may lower significantly the prevalence of infestation. Statistical data on the degree of infestation relating to socio-economic and cultural variables were also updated. Therapeutic effects and educational impact were evaluated. Methods An educational and motivational program was designed for pupils, parents, and teachers: 326 children and 15 adults were subjected to clinical and parasitologic evaluation. The recorded parameters included the age, sex, hair style and length, presence of other dermatologic diseases, degree of infestation, clinical remission, parasitologic remission, dwelling type and features, need to share a bed with co-dwellers, availability of home tap water supply, level of family income, and periodic medical controls. The entire population received treatment with neutral shampoo and rinsing cream containing 1% permethrin. Exclusion criteria were the presence of acute scalp inflammation and a history of pyrethrin and/or pyrethroid sensitivity. Statistical analysis was performed as required on data expressed as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations by chi-square and Fisher exact tests. Results The overall infestation prevalence rate was 81.5%, the highest values corresponding to children from 6 to 11 years of age, with a slight predominance in males (55.4% vs. 44.6%). A significantly greater rate of clinical remission was observed in subjects enjoying home tap water supplies (p〈0.01). Conclusions The model of research plus action adopted allows the following conclusions to be drawn; (i) individual and isolated treatments for pediculosis are useful, but will not by themselves allow for the epidemiologic control of this parasitosis; (ii) massive, complete, and simultaneous treatments lead to a significant decrease in infestation prevalence; (iii) educational measures tending to foster collective awareness enable greater epidemiologic surveillance to be achieved; (iv) careful inspection of the entire scalp is essential with the use of a powerful light source and lenses with high magnification, as the parasite has no predilection for any given area; (iv) socio-economic and cultural conditions are not relevant for infestation, although a good home tap water supply is essential for treatment.

Notes: [Auszug] It is generally believed that animals make decisions about the selection of mates, kin or food on the basis of pre-constructed recognition templates. These templates can be innate or acquired through experience. An example of an acquired template is the feeding preference exhibited by larvae of ...

Notes: Abstract The host range of Manduca sexta L. (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) is restricted in nature to plants in the family Solanaceae. However, naive hatchling larvae often accept and continue their development on foliage from a wide spectrum of unrelated plants. In contrast, solanaceous-experienced larvae refuse to feed on other plants. Experiments were designed to explore the role of constituents of various plants in this behavioral phenomenon. Fourth instar larvae reared on solanaceous hosts: tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), or tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.), and the leguminous non-host cowpea (Vigna sinensis Savi), or on artificial diet based on wheat germ were tested for their acceptance or preference when offered a new diet in both choice and no-choice situations. Under no-choice conditions, acceptability of cowpea foliage was strongly affected by the larval dietary experience. Most larvae reared on solanaceous foliage did not feed, whereas those larvae reared on non-solanaceous food readily accepted cowpea. Moreover, solanaceous foliage, leaf discs and extracts were readily accepted by larvae regardless of their dietary experience. Larvae reared on any of the solanaceous plants strongly preferred cowpea discs that were treated with solanaceous extract, while larvae reared on non-solanaceous diets did not discriminate between treated and control discs. Assays of cowpea extracts as well as acceptance of cowpea discs treated with solanaceous extract indicated a lack of detectable deterrent in cowpea. Our results suggest that the mechanism for induced host specificity in M. sexta larvae involves development of a dependence on solanaceous chemical constituents. We argue that this dependence on host plant chemistry has adaptive significance.

Notes: Abstract The paper presents a new, non-traditional method for the synthesis of barium metaniobate, BaNb2O6, and of a mixed barium-strontium metaniobate, Ba0.29Sr0.71Nb2O6, through the thermal decomposition of coprecipitation products. The conditions of quantitative precipitation of the metals as niobic acid and barium or barium-strontium oxalate were established. The mechanism of thermal decomposition of the coprecipitate was deduced from differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction date. Barium metaniobate forms at 470°C, below the temperature required in the synthesis based upon the solid-state reaction between Nb2O5 and BaCO3 (1100°C). The mixed barium-strontium compound is formed at 700°C, below the 1100°C used in the reaction between Nb2O5, BaCO3 and SrCO3.
