    Notes: Pockel's electro-optic coefficients r31 and r33 of Li2B4O7 have been measured with an improved interferometric (Mach–Zehnder) method. The effective rc coefficient has also been measured by a polarimetric setup which, within the experimental error, has given the same value as that of the interferometric method. Attempts to measure the r42 coefficient with either the interferometric or the polarimetric method have given a value below the detection limit of our setups. All coefficients are given in terms of the published values of the piezoelectric coefficient d13. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An atomic beam polarized ion source, used heavily since 1989 for producing polarized H± and D± beams for experiments between 25 keV and 20 MeV, has been modified to accept a Lamb shift, spin-filter polarimeter. In this source, polarized ground-state H or D atoms enter an electron cyclotron resonance ionizer where they are stripped to produce an outgoing positive polarized ion beam. When negative ions are desired, cesium vapor is introduced into a downstream charge-exchange canal. The polarimeter, based on an atomic physics concept first developed to produce nuclear-spin-polarized beams at Los Alamos, is designed to monitor the polarization of 2S1/2 metastable H or D atoms emerging from the cesium canal. Metastable 2S1/2 atoms created by electron pickup in a collision with cesium are "filtered'' by the polarimeter according to magnetic substate, as the magnetic field imposed on the polarimeter cavity is tuned between 53 and 61 mT. Photons produced by subsequent quenching of these filtered atoms to their ground state are monitored downstream by a phototube to reveal the magnetic substate population of the incident positive beam. To install the polarimeter cavity and phototube assembly, the existing polarized ion source was lengthened by 30 cm. Installation is complete, and comparisons with calibrated nuclear polarimeters have shown agreement to better than 0.023. Principles of operation, a description of the hardware, measurements for cross calibration, and impressions gained from its use are all presented. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The stability of fixed volume phase holograms in lithium niobate is studied. The new measurement method is able to distinguish between electronic compensation and true erasure. It is found that at temperatures in the range of 70–120 °C both electronic thermal detrapping and ionic movement are active effects. The actual lifetime of fixed holograms is determined in this temperature range. From these measurements, we extrapolate a lifetime for the fixed hologram refractive index change of 3.7 years at room temperature. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: : A loafing or sacrifice lot is an area located outside of the free stall barn, where a dairy herd spends several hours per day. Sacrifice lots are usually denuded of vegetation and have high concentrations of manure and urine that can contribute significant amounts of sediment, nutrients, and pathogens to nearby surface waters. In this study, stream water quality impacted by direct runoff from a sacrifice lot was monitored for a period of 20 months. Ambient stream water quality was monitored by grab sampling upstream and downstream of the sacrifice lot. During runoff events, stream water quality downstream of the sacrifice lot was monitored with an automatic sampler. Laboratory analyses were conducted for total suspended solids and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus compounds). A grass filter strip (GFS) was installed as a buffer downslope of the sacrifice lot 10 months into the study period. The impact of the buffer strip on the standardized pollutant concentrations and loads was evaluated using the non-parametric Wilcoxon test. The Wilcoxon test indicated that there was no significant difference (α= 0.05) in the standardized yield of sediment and dissolved pollutants before and after the GFS installation, except for phosphate-phosphorus and filtered total phosphorus concentrations, and sediment-bound total phosphorus and total kjeldahl nitrogen loads that decreased significantly. However, load decrease could have been partially caused by the smaller rainfall volumes after the GFS installation as compared to the existing condition.

    Notes: A method is presented for obtaining a unique temporal and spatial slip distribution on a prescribed fault plane from inversion of earthquake ground motion. The inverse problem is formulated in the frequency domain where the spatial distribution of slip is found for a set of frequency values. The time dependence of slip is then recovered by Fourier synthesis. A new norm minimization condition is presented, based upon the scalar wave equation, which produces the model having the most nearly constant rupture velocity and the most nearly constant slip amplitude distribution. Although a preferred rupture velocity is specified, no assumption on the geometrical shape of the rupture front is made. While time-domain inversion methods prescribe the hypocentre location, source time function, and rupture front geometry, the frequency-domain method actually solves for these important source properties. The wave equation minimization condition is tested using synthetic data from Haskell-type dislocation models in a homogeneous full-space. These solutions are compared with the traditional two-norm minimization solutions. The two-norm minimization models exhibit a strong dependence on the recording array geometry. The wave equation minimization models are smoother and devoid of many of the spurious features that are not actually required by the data but that, nevertheless, appear in the two-norm minimization models. The results of numerical experiments indicate that the solution need not conform to the specified rupture velocity value used in the construction of the wave equation norm if the data are sufficient to warrant otherwise.

    Notes: A morphometric study of nucleolar organizer regions (NOR) was performed to analyze their distribution, volume, number and shape in the different strata of human normal oral mucosa epithelium and papilloma and in squamous cell carcinoma employing microphotographs of silver-stained paraffin sections. The different NOR-related parameters evidenced significant differences between normal mucosa, papilloma and squamous cell carcinoma. The functional polarity of normal mucosa epithelium and of papilloma is also evidenced in terms of NOR-related parameters. The discriminative value of certain NOR parameters was demonstrated.

    Notes: A rapid, reproducible method is described for extracting and comparing levels of the ether-soluble fish androgen 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) in blood serum, muscle tissue and surface mucus. Because widely different volumes of extract were recovered after centrifugation from the three sources, it was important to express androgen levels as pg 11-KT/mg of total soluble protein (TSP). For six male and four female sexually-staged freshwater Koi (Cyprinus carpio), the method yielded similar pg 11-KT/mg TSP ratios in blood serum and extracts of muscle tissue and surface mucus, with the strongest correlation between blood serum and surface mucus. While male Koi were distinguishable from females based on the magnitude of 11-KT levels, reproductive stage and gonadosomatic index levels were not correlated with the 11-KT levels of either sex. Similar pg 11-KT/mg TSP ratios were also found for autologous muscle tissue and surface mucus extracts of 37 captured and sexed wild marine fishes representing seven genera. However, high 11-KT levels were not restricted to mature males. Collectively, results suggest that surface mucus collection (followed by 11-KT assay) is a useful alternative to more invasive methods of determining systemic hormone levels in fish. Without knowledge of seasonal variation in levels of this and other sex hormones, however, reliance on 11-KT levels alone may lead to spurious identification of gender, let alone reproductive stage.
