Notes: Summary Comparative studies of the spiral ganglion cells in guinea pigs and rats, subsequent to osmium and glutaraldehyde fixation were undertaken to demonstrate the structure of their myelin sheets. We believe that the myelin sheets consist only out of loose and compact myelin components, which can be seen using glutaraldehyde fixation. The so called semicompact myelin must be an artefact due to osmiumfixation followed by a slight shrinkage of the ganglion cells with tearing of the compact myelin.

Notes: Summary We have been examining with the electron microscope the spiral ganglion and the organ of corti in guinea pigs, using osmium and a combined glutaraldehyde-osmiumfixation together with various fixation techniques. The structures of the organ of corti were not considerably effected. Differences in the structure of the myelin sheets of ganglion cells were found in the spiral ganglion. Presumably the semicompact myelin represents an artefakt after osmium-fixation, glutaraldehyde being able to demonstrate clearer the structure of the myelin sheets on spiral ganglion cells compared to osmium.

Notes: Summary After exposure to noise (100 dB for 40 and 60 min) we observed distinct patterns of degeneration of the sensory and dark cells, similar to those after intoxication with ototoxic substances. We used white noise.

Notes: Summary Looking for the morphological correlation of uremic inner ear damage a 5/6 resection of kidney parenchyma in rats was performed. A biochemically proven chronic uremia was so created. The ultrastructural examination of the stria vascularis showed a marked swelling of the intermediate cells, compressing occasionally stria vessels. The stria was enlarged and the mitochondria of the dark and light cells swollen. In the spiral ligament connective tissue cells were moderately swollen and blood vessels partially obstructed by swelling of the endothelium. These changes are proved not to be dependent on the urea. The pathophysiological significance for uremic inner ear damage can only be determined after further examination of cochlear tissue.

Notes: Abstract This study presents a method of calculation for two-dimensional, steady-state, laminar flow in the entrance region of an MHD duct. The electrically conducting fluid in the free stream is compressible whereas the medium in the boundary layer itself is taken to be incompressible. Thus, the density is variable in the axial direction of the duct only, and the momentum and energy equations for the boundary layer are uncoupled. These equations are solved using an extended Von Kármán-Pohlhausen method as described by U. P. Hwang for a compressible MHD flow with zero electric field. In this study, however, the electric field is essentially not zero and the MHD duct can work as a generator. The equations of the insulator boundary layer are solved in the assumption that the displacement thickness of the electrode boundary layer equals that of the insulator boundary layer, so the total influence of the varying effective crossection on the free stream is taken into account. In this way a quick method of calculating the MHD flow in the entrance region of a duct is obtained.

Notes: Summary This is the first morphometric analysis of the cochlear spiral ganglion. Therefore the ganglion was subdivided in precisely defined compartments. We found that the normal, untreated spiral ganglion in guinea pigs contains 58% ganglion cells of the granular type, 26% satellite cells and Schwann cells, 8.6% extracellular space, 6.4% myelinated nerve fibers and 1% ganglion cells of the filamentous type. The granular ganglion cell consists in 83% out of cytoplasm and in 17% out of nuclei. The cytoplasm is containing 13% ribosomes, 12% mitochondria, 10% RER, 2.1% Golgi apparatus, 1.3% lysosomes. Based on these quantitative datas we expect to detect alterations of the normal structure earlier and more precisely under pathophysiological conditions as before.

Notes: Summary The cochlear spiral ganglion of rats consists of 61.8% granular ganglion cells, 22.4% satellite cells and Schwann cells, 9.3% extracellular space, 4.8% myelinated nerve fibers and 1.4% filamentous ganglion cells. The granular ganglion cells consist of 76% cytoplasmic components and 24% nuclei. Their cytoplasm contains 66.3% hyaloplasm, 11.4% mitochondria, 11% free ribosomes, 7.8% rough endoplasmic reticulum, 2.7% Golgi apparatus and 0.8% lysosomes. Comparing with morphometric data in guinea pigs, granular spiral ganglion cells in rats show some species dependent differences in their quantitative cytoarchitecture. They don't differ in their principal architectural pattern, especially in regard to the metabolism for energy and cell performance. The spiral ganglion cells of rats in contrast to those of guinea pigs do not show viral particles. Since it is impossible to evaluate with certainty the influence of viruses on the metabolism of infected cells, in our opinion rats are more suitable experimental animals for morphometric investigations of spiral ganglions.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung An Meerschweinchen-Cristae wurden die Erholungsvorgänge nach Streptomycinapplikation untersucht.
Notes: Summary The proceedings of restitution after Streptomycineintoxication were examined on Guinea-pigs cristae ampullares. The animals were sacrificed 10, 14, 16 days after the tenth injection of Streptomycine (250 mg/kg and day). At this time no visible damage of the sensory cell's plasma could be seen, though at the same time the sensory hairs showed signs of intoxikation. There were remarkably different patterns of degeneration in the dark cells, regarding degree and shape of damage.
