    Notes: Abstract Partially stabilized ZrO2-Y2O3 films (PSZ) were deposited using an r.f.-diode cathode sputter deposition system. The variation of film structure according to changes in the deposition parameters is described. The results show that the oxygen concentration of the oxygen-argon sputtering gas used for deposition of PSZ films can be used to control the microstructure of the films and their roughness. We found the optimal oxygen concentration to be 10%, resulting in a dense and homogeneous structure within the film, and a smoother surface. At the optimal oxygen concentration of 10% the refractive index and the absorption coefficient of the films showed a clear maximum and minimum, respectively. We consider that addition of oxygen to neutral argon sputtering gas both decreases the sputtering yield and increases the substrate bombardment by neutral oxygens.

    Notes: Abstract   The distribution of two repetitive DNA probes Sat-121 and PB6-4, specific for the section Procumbentes of the genus Beta, was tested in 16 B. patellaris monosomic addition families using a dot-blot hybridization procedure. All monosomic additions were accurately distinguished from diploid sib plants with both DNA probes. The probe PB6-4, with the strongest signal after hybridization, was selected for rapid screening of an extensive number of putative monosomic additions in B. patellaris or B. procumbens addition families using a squash-blot hybridization procedure. The probe PB6-4 detected 118 monosomic additions in 640 plants (18.4%) in eight different B. procumbens addition families. The addition family with chromosome 4 of B. procumbens was semi-lethal and could not be tested. The distribution of PB6-4 in B. patellaris addition families was confirmed in 63 addition families using the squash-blot procedure. In 4580 plants of these addition families, 628 individual monosomic additions (13.7%) were found. The relationship of the morphological characteristics of monosomic addition plants to the results of the squash-blot hybridization (plants with signal) using probe PB6-4 is quite rigorous but not complete. The correlation between plants with a signal and chromosome number (2n=19) is complete. These results indicate that sequences present on PB6-4 are probably present on all chromosomes of B. patellaris and B. procumbens. The possibility of utilizing the sequence information of Sat-121 for a PCR-based assay to screen for putative monosomic addition plants was also investigated as an alternative to chromosome counting. The DNA-amplification profiles using the primers REP and REP.INV clearly distinguished monosomic addition plants from their diploid sibs.

    Notes: Abstract The McMaster Health Utilities Indexes Mark 2 (HUI2) and 3 (HUI3) are multiattribute health classification systems, for which multiattribute preference functions have been developed in Canada. They provide a comprehensive instrument for use in economic evaluations and population health survey studies. This paper reports on the first results on the adaptation of the HUI2 and HUI3 systems cross-culturally and the assessment of the validity and reliability of the French self-report questionnaire in different patient populations. The cross-cultural adaptation included translation, backtranslations, an expert consensus meeting and pre-test with a few patients and healthy subjects in order to produce a conceptually equivalent French version of the 15 question self-report questionnaire and the HUI2 and HUI3 classification systems. Different groups of patients attending specialized clinics (n = 709) completed the questionnaire and another generic questionnaire (the Sickness Impact Profile (SIP)) for validity assessment. Physicians and patients were also asked for a global subjective assessment of the patient's health status. The French questionnaire was well received by the patients. The criterion and convergent validities of both classification systems (correlations with the patients' and physicians' assessments and with the responses to the SIP questionnaire) were satisfactory. The internal consistency was acceptable too (Cronbach's α = 0.81), as was the 3 day test-retest reproducibility. These first results authorize careful use of the 15 question self-report questionnaire in French. An assessment of the multiattribute preference function for the HUI3 system in France will be the study's next objective.

    Notes: Cardenolides of Convallaria majalis were separated by reverse-phase HPLC on Partisil PXS 10/25 ODS columns using 25% acetonitrile as mobile phase. Periplorhamnoside, convallatoxin and either convallatoxol or convalloside were resolved from glycoside mixtures. Convallatoxin and periplorhamnoside were identified in plant extracts, convalloside and convallatoxol were not resolved from non-cardenolide material present in leaf extracts.
