Notes: [Auszug] The use of 5-MOP in a number of suntan preparations widely available in several European countries has been questioned20. It was suggested, in view of the evidence of the carcinogenicity of 8-MOP when combined with near UV light3-8,15,16, that 5-MOP might have similar properties. There has been one ...

Notes: Summary The local homogeneity property is defined as in [Mak]. We show thatL ωω(Q1) and some related logics do not have the local homogeneity property, whereas cofinality logicL ωω(Q cfω) has the homogeneity property. Both proofs use forcing and absoluteness arguments.

    Notes: Abstract. We investigate several versions of a cardinal characteristic $ \frak f$ defined by Frankiewicz. Vojtáš showed ${\frak b} \leq{\frak f}$ , and Blass showed ${\frak f} \leq \min({\frak d},{\mbox{\rm unif}}({\bf K}))$ . We show that all the versions coincide and that ${\frak f}$ is greater than or equal to the splitting number. We prove the consistency of $\max({\frak b},{\frak s}) 〈{\frak f}$ and of ${\frak f} 〈 \min({\frak d},{\mbox{\rm unif}}({\bf K}))$ .

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Abstract. In order to perform resections of tumors at critical sites in the liver in young children, liver resections in cardiac arrest and deep hypothermia under cardiopulmonary bypass have been developed. We report our experience with liver resection under cardiopulmonary bypass in three children with hepatoblastoma. In the first child the operation was performed under cardiac arrest and, the other two children were operated on under „low flow“ conditions. The periods under cardiopulmonary bypass circulation were well tolerated. Extended right liver resections with vascular reconstructions were performed. The postoperative increase of liver enzymes was moderate. The increase in GOT was between 100 and 200 U/l. In spite of the extended tumor growth, reasonable long-term results were achieved by resection in combination with chemotherapy. One child has been living 8 years and another 10 months without tumor recurrence. The third child died due to sepsis during adjuvant chemotherapy, after she had recovered well from liver resection.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract HMSN is a hereditary symmetric ascending neuropathy of the peripherial nerves. Several cases of HMSN with motility disorders of both eyes have been reported in the literature. We describe a patient with HMSN type 1 and an incomplete peripherial 3rd nerve palsy of the right eye. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of developed unilateral oculomotor disorder in a patient with HMSN.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Two weeks after an upper respiratory infection, a ten year old boy presented with vomiting, vertigo, and spontaneous nystagmus, suggesting an elevation of intracerebral pressure. However, caloric testing revealed unilateral depression of labyrinthine function, while cerebrospinal fluid and a magnetic nuclear imaging scan of the brain were normal. Therefore we made the diagnosis of vestibular neuronitis. The disease was self-limited within several days. Vestibular neuronitis has an incidence of 4:100000 and occurs predominantly at the age of 40–50 years. Only 5% of the affected patients are children. The disease is regarded as the vestibular counterpart of sudden hearing loss. Diagnostic criteria are vertigo, decreased reaction to caloric stimulation of the labyrinth, absent abnormality of cochlear and central nervous system. Causative factors are infectious, cardiovascular, metabolic, and toxic affections. A preceeding upper respiratory infection appears in up to 60% of affected children. The prognosis for complete recovery is excellent in children. Discussion: We report a classical case of vestibular neuronitis in childhood. This uncommon disease in the pediatric age group should be considered when an elevation of intracerebral pressure is suspected.
