    Notes: Infrared (IR) reflection spectra of sintered SiC thermoelectric semiconductors are studied as a function of doping concentration as well as of sintering temperature. Attention is focused on the changes in the reststrahlen band. The peak and dip frequencies remain constant, implying we are probing stable optical phonon mode in the crystalline grains through the interaction with IR photons. In contrast, variation of spectral shape, including the peak and background reflectance seems to give valuable information regarding the quality of the sintered samples and dopant distribution within the crystal grains and grain boundaries. Measured spectra are analyzed by the use of a four-component effective medium model. In this model we assume the presence of: (1) pores, (2) intergranular materials, (3) crystalline grains, and (4) metallic inclusions (at higher doping levels of metallic impurities), with volume fractions fi(i=1–4), respectively. For frequency dependent complex dielectric functions we employed: (a) a single oscillator model appropriate to the single crystal for the crystalline grains, (b) a Drude model for the metallic inclusions, and assumed (c) another single oscillator model for the intergranular material. The parameters of the latter are determined to give a best fit to the spectrum of a low doping level sample. This model gives excellent overall fit to measured spectra with the ratio f2/f3 and the damping coefficients for the oscillators as adjustable parameters when the experimental estimates for the fraction of pores f1 and metallic inclusions f4 are used. This is remarkable in view of the situation that similar data could not, so far, be explained in terms of the simple Maxwell–Garnet model. The results suggest that careful analyses of spectral shape of IR reflection in the optical phonon resonance region can be used to get information on the intergranular to grain ratio or on the damping coefficients, which are related to the quality of sintered samples or to the distribution of doped impurities among grains and grain boundaries. The background reflectance also give information on the presence of metallic inclusions although the effects of scattering may affect the interpretation. These results combined with the possibility of local probing seems to imply that IR reflectance can offer a versatile means to check the quality of the sintered samples. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Differential isothermal capacitance transient spectroscopy (DICTS) and normalized isothermal capacitance transient spectroscopy (NICTS) were proposed to improve the resolution of the conventional isothermal capacitance transient spectroscopy (ICTS) which could characterize the deep levels in semiconductors isothermally. The resolution of the methods was studied for the closely spaced energy levels by the numerical simulation. Though the resolvable emission rate ratio R (R=λ2/λ1, where λ1 and λ2 are each thermal emission rate for two levels) of ICTS was around 5, R of DICTS was around 4. Moreover, R of NICTS reached 3.5 which is less than that of any other conventional methods. The error ratio of the estimation is almost the same as ICTS. The new method was applied to study the deep levels in a Si:Au system as an example and found two closely spaced energy levels explicitly. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A patient had triple extramammary Paget's disease of both axillary and genital regions. Right inguinal lymphadenopathy was found 1 year after excision of all the skin lesions. Excisional biopsy of the lymph node demonstrated a mixture of Paget cells and atypical squamoid cells with horn pearls suggestive of keratinization. The squamoid cells were positive for cytokeratin 10, a marker of suprabasal epidermis, and also positive for laminin γ2 which is often expressed in invasive squamous cell carcinoma. The coexistence of these different cells within the same tumour island suggested that the squamoid cells derived from metaplasia of Paget cells.

    Notes: We propose an improved version of the CCVT (constant capacitance–voltage transient) method to study the emission rate spectrum of deep impurity levels in semiconductors. The iterative feedback system is developed for this CCVT technique. The emission rate spectrum is analyzed from the feedback voltage transient wave form by using a nonlinear least-squares program. The feasibility of the method is shown for an Au-doped Si p+n diode. The method is expected to be effective in resolving the problem of closely spaced multiple deep levels, even if the sample has a high trap concentration and/or a nonabrupt junction profile. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Serum dopamineβ-hydroxylase activity, which is thought to reflect noradrenaline secretion, and free fatty acid level were measured in twenty atopic asthmatic children, of whom ten had exercise-induced asthma (EIA), after exercise on the treadmill.There was a significant decrease in the level of serum dopamine β-hydroxylase activity in the asthmatics who developed EIA and this closely accompanied the onset of airflow obstruction. There was no change in the free fatty acid levels. In contrast, the asthmatics, who did not have EIA showed a significant rise in the levels of dopamine β-hydroxylase activity and free fatty acids after the same exercise task.Our results suggest that the atopic children studied, who developed EIA, may have had an impaired noradrenaline response to exercise. It is further suggested that this impaired noradrenaline secretion may facilitate mediator release and contribute to the airflow obstruction in EIA.

    Notes: Primary and secondary extinction are studied using the dynamical theory of X-rays diffracted by imperfect crystals. The transition from dynamical to kinematical scattering is explained in terms of fundamental processes in diffraction. Contrary to existing extinction theories, where the intensities diffracted dynamically by single coherent domains of a mosaic are combined using an ad hoc assumption of mosaic distributions, the present theory permits the dynamical amplitudes to change in response to disturbances of the dynamical interactions by imperfections. Neither the mosaic block model nor the statistical treatment of imperfections is used. The extinction of diffracted intensities is thereby treated as caused solely by inhomogeneous strains in a single coherent domain.
