Notes: The onset and recurrence of multiple filamentary structures in the long-distance propagation of high power femtosecond laser pulses in air displays features analogous to strong turbulence events observed in many areas of physics. However, dissipation is not a key player in regularizing the underlying singular dynamical events. The collapse singularity of the two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear Schrödinger equation is identified as the robust nonlinear mode which both initiates and sustains the waveguide. Physical collapse regularization mechanisms include normal group velocity dispersion and plasma generation in the high intensity nonlinear focal regions. Plasma absorption is weak and the dominant process is the transient generation of a highly localized strongly defocusing lens which evacuates the light behind the leading intense light filament. Consequently the nonlinear waveguide formed is highly dynamic. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The design of a simple all-optical spatial scanner, based on a propagating self-focused channel incident at an oblique angle to a nonlinear dielectric interface, is illustrated using the beam propagation method. The channel asymptotics are shown to be insensitive to the shape of the incident beam profile with the latter satisfying a simple area criterion.

Notes: Starting from a set of equations derived from a microscope theory we show that the familiar nonlinear gain of the form a/(1+I/Is) introduced in semiconductor laser rate equations phenomenologically should be replaced by a more general form of a/(1+I/Is)b. The new scaling exponent b depends on the relaxation constant γT that describes the rate of heat dissipation from plasma to the lattice due to carrier-phonon scattering. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The gain medium effects on the lateral mode stability of an unstable resonator semiconductor laser are investigated. A physical optics laser model based on a many-body semiclassical laser theory of the gain medium is used. The consistent treatment of bulk, quantum well, and strained quantum well structures shows that quantum confinement or strain can result in single lateral mode operation over significantly wider ranges of unstable resonator configurations and gain medium excitation.

Notes: The linewidth enhancement factor in single quantum-well graded index separate confinement heterostructure semiconductor lasers is investigated theoretically and experimentally. For thin wells, a small linewidth enhancement factor is obtained which clamps with increasing carrier density, in contrast to the monotonous increase observed for thicker wells. Microscopic many-body calculations reproduce the experimental observations attributing the clamping to excitation dependent gain shifts and the influence of the population of off-resonant states on the refractive index. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The transverse behavior of a laser beam propagating through a bistable optical cavity is investigated analytically and numerically. Numerical experiments that study the (one-dimensional) transverse structure of the steady state profile are described. Mathematical descriptions of (i) an infinite-dimensional map that models the situation, (ii) the solitary waves that represent the transverse steady state structures, (iii) a projection formalism that reduces the infinite-dimensional map to a finite-dimensional one, and (iv) the theoretical analysis of this reduced map are presented in detail. The accuracy of this theoretical analysis is established by comparing its predictions to numerical observations.

Notes: Abstract The spatial soliton plays a fundamental role as a robust, particle-like object which can be manipulated to switch or spatially scan collimated light channels or optical pulses which are incident at an oblique angle to an interface separating two or more selffocusing Kerr slab dielectrics. The underlying equivalent particle/multiparticle theory can also be employed to predict stability properties of nonlinear surface or guided waves, to derive an analytic expression for the nonlinear Goos-Hanchen shift at a nonlinear interface and to quantify the effect of material diffusion, linear and twophoton absorption on the switching behaviour of the light beam. Pulsed spatial switching effects are studied in order to illustrate the general predictive power of the equivalent particle theory.

Notes: Abstract We report on a full-scale numerical simulation of the coherent photon seeding technique applied to colour-centre lasers with counterpropagating beams. The stabilization technique is proved to be simple and efficient independently of the interferometric precision of the coupled cavity.

Notes: Abstract The dynamical behaviour of Fabry-Perot type semiconductor lasers is modelled, including the relevant many-body Coulomb effects of the excited carriers. Conditions are given under which a parametrization of the full model is possible, allowing simple analytic relations for local gain, refractive index and linewidth enhancement factor. The parameters of the simplified model are uniquely determined by the microscopic theory and have to be optimized for the respective operating conditions. The theory is evaluated for bulk and quantum-well GaAs active material and a variety of laser structures, including strongly and weakly index-guided structures, as well as purely guided single-and twin-stripe lasers.
