Notes: This article reports on the photoluminescence study of activation of a Li dopant in ZnSe films. It has been found that the amphoteric role of the Li dopant is strongly influenced by annealing or substrate temperature. The temperature ranges for efficient activation of Li are estimated to be 430–460 °C in the annealing experiment and 280–350 °C in the thermal diffusion experiment. The correlation of emission intensities between acceptor-bound exciton (I1), donor-bound exciton (I2), and donor-acceptor pair (DAP Q0) is described in detail. As the Li acceptor increases, the emission intensities of both I1 and DAP increase, which leads to the decrease in the emission intensity of I2.

Notes: We report a remarkably reduced photorefractive sensitivity in Ti:LiNbO3 channel waveguides using substrates with reduced optical absorption near the absorption edge. In addition, the intensity dependence of the saturated index change was measured, which indicates that, based on the Glass model, the saturated value of photoinduced index change is independent of irradiation intensity in the high intensity limit.

Notes: In laser purification of Ag from an Ag-In alloy based on multistep photoexcitation for ionization, we demonstrated that a time-division collection method employing a high-speed rotation disk is effective in suppressing an impurity level. High purity Ag film of 0.11% In impurity concentration was obtained from a starting Ag-In alloy of 6.08% In. This impurity reduction was much higher than the case without the new method, in which only half reduction was obtained. This work also showed that the contamination is mainly due to neutral atoms that failed to be irradiated by pulsed-mode lasers. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The n-type ZnSe with electron concentration up to 3×1020 cm−3 and low resistivity down to 1×10−4 Ω cm has been grown using a planar-doping technique of chlorine during molecular beam epitaxy. The photoluminescence evaluation shows that the planar-doped ZnSe layers are superior to uniformly doped ones especially for the case of high Cl doping. The in-depth profile of Cl concentration in a planar-doped sample was measured with a secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). The SIMS analysis shows only slight diffusion of the incorporated Cl atoms even in highly doped samples.

Notes: The specific roles of syntaxin 5 (Syx 5) in the interaction with presenilin (PS) and the accumulation of β-amyloid precursor protein (βAPP), as well as the secretion of β-amyloid peptide (Aβ peptide) were examined in NG108-15 cells. Syx 5, which localizes from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the Golgi, bound to PS holoproteins, while the other Syxs studied did not. Among familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD)-linked PS mutants, PS1ΔE9, which lacks the endoproteolytic cleavage site, showed markedly decreased binding to Syx 5. The interaction domains in Syx 5 were mapped to the transmembrane region and to the cytoplasmic region containing the α-helical domains, which are distinct from the H3 (SNARE motif). Among all of the Syxs examined, only overexpression of Syx 5 resulted in the accumulation of βAPP in the ER to cis-Golgi compartment, an attenuation of the amount of the C-terminal fragment (APP-CTF) of βAPP, and a reduction in the secretion of Aβ peptides. Furthermore, co-expression of Syx 5 with C99 resulted in an increase in APP-CTF and suppressed Aβ secretion. Taken together, these results indicate that Syx 5 may play a specific role in the modulation of processing and/or trafficking of FAD-related proteins in neuronal cells by interaction with PS holoproteins in the early secretory compartment of neuronal cells.

Notes: An autopsy case of malignant eccrine poroma (MEP) with multiple visceral metastases is reported. A flat, dark tumor of 1 cm in diameter developed on a pre-existing pigmented spot at the left side of the waist of a 58-year-old male. The histopathology suggested the tumor to be malignant melanoma. Nine years later, a painless swelling occurred in the left lower leg, resulting from the obstruction of lymphatics at the left inguinal region. The swelling continued and spread with pain, reaching the inguinal region. Two years later, several papules appeared around the left knee, from which an extensive lymphorrhea occurred. The histopathology of the resected papules suggested epidermoid carcinoma or trichilemmal carcinoma, mainly localized within the lymphatics of the upper dermis. Re-examination of the first skin tumor and electron microscopy of the tumor obtained at autopsy revealed that both tumors were MEP. Although the metastases to the local cutaneous regions and lymph nodes via the lymphatics occur in 20% of MEP, cases with multiple visceral metastases are very few.

Notes: Summary The patient was a 60-year-old Japanese male. He complained of epigastralgia and right chest pain of 4 month's duration, and general malaise, nausea and vomiting of 2 month's duration. Physical examination revealed on the right third rib a tender mass with a diameter of 2 cm and hepatomegaly with a multi-nodular surface and red palms. There were no signs of carcinoid syndrome, such as cutaneous flushing. Laboratory examinations disclosed certain biochemical alterations; alkaline phosphatase 810 IU/l, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GTP) 2090 IU/l, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) 23.5 ng/ml and α-fetoprotein (AFP) 6,800 ng/ml. Both HBs-Ag and HBs-Ab were negative. The patient died in a uremic state, with rapid increases of jaundice and ascites. Autopsy revealed gastric carcinoid with extensive metastases to the liver and the bone marrow. Tumor cells showed argyrophilia but not argentaffinity. Immunofluorescence specific for AFP was positive in the hepatocytes, particularly those adjacent to the metastatic tumor cells but not in the tumor cells, either primary or secondary. 79 Cases reported in Japan of serum AFP-positive malignant tumor other than hepatocullular carcinoma and certain other malignancies of germ cell origin are reviewed and discussed.

Notes: Summary Reinke's crystals in human Leydig cells were analyzed stereologically to assess their functional role. Testicular tissues were taken from seven older men (57–82 years old) with prostatic carcinoma and also from seven younger men (26–38 y.o.) complaining of male infertility. Sections 0.5 Μm thick, stained with toluidine blue or Heidenhein's iron-hematoxylin were examined by a point-counting method and with a Particle Measurement Computor System (πMC). When the patients were grouped by age, the mean crystal volume, the number of crystals per cell, the volume of crystals per cell and the volume ratio of crystals to cell were significantly larger in the older age group than in the younger age group. In particular, the latter three variables correlated well with the age of subjects, with correlation coefficients of r=0.66–0.85. On the other hand, none of these variables had any correlation with the concentration of plasma testosterone. These results indicate that Reinke's crystals can be considered as degenerative products in cell life but not as facultative constituents for testosterone production.
