Notes: In a person with inactive ALDH2 (ALDH2*2) the blood aldehyde concentration tends to rise faster and higher and there are flushing responses which are considered to be a restraint against excessive alcohol drinking. The subjects in this study comprised 71 Japanese alcoholics. Psychiatrists interviewed the patients concerning the clinical features. Alcoholics homozygous (n = 59) for ALDH2*1/ALDH2*1 (Group I) and those heterozygous (n = 12) for ALDH2*1/ALDH2*2 (Group II) were compared. Group II alcoholics included significantly more cases of guilt or personality disorder. These findings indicate that alcoholics with the ALDH2*2 genotype showed generally typical clinical features.

Notes: We have fabricated GaInP/Er,O-codoped GaAs (GaAs:Er,O)/GaInP double heterostructure (DH) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and successfully observed 1.5 µm electroluminescence (EL) due to an Er-2O center under forward bias at room temperature. Er excitation cross section by current injection decreased with increasing GaAs:Er,O active layer thickness, implying reduced diffusionlength of injected carriers in the active layer. Carrier dynamics in GaAs:Er,O have also been investigated by means of a pump and probe reflection technique. Time-resolved reflectivity of GaAs:Er,O exhibited a characteristic dip after a steep decrease to negative in less than 10 ps. The analysis of the characteristic dip revealed short lifetime in range of ps for photoexcited carriers. Theextremely short lifetime is quite coincident with the reduced diffusion length of injected carriers, and suggests that a trap induced by Er and O codoping would play an important role in dynamics of nonequilibrium carriers in GaAs:Er,O

Notes: Abstract The ras GTPase activating protein (ras GAP), a regulator of Ras activity, has two isoforms; ras GAP 120 and ras GAP 100. The latter, whose molecular size is about 100 kDa, is generated alternative splicing from the ras GAP 120 gene and is considered placenta-specific, while the former is expressed ubiquitously. As point mutations of ras are frequently observed in human tumors, we investigated the expression of ras GAP in several human cancer cell lines and samples of human colon cancer using immunoprecipitation and immunoblot analysis with an anti-GAP monoclonal antibody, B4F8, as well as reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). ras GAP 100 protein was detected in 4 of 9 colonic, 1 of 6 gastric and 1 of 4 lung cancer cell lines as well as ras GAP 120, but not in colon cancer specimens. In contrast, ras GAP 100 mRNA was present in all tested cell lines and colon cancer specimens. Then, we investigated ras GAP 100 expression in normal tissues. ras GAP 100 protein was not detected in human normal tissues except placenta. Contrary, ras GAP 100 message was expressed in normal tissues derived from liver, stomach, colon and lymphocyte although the level of which was smaller than that in placenta. These findings demonstrate that ras GAP 100, reportedly placenta-specific, is distributed in other normal tissues at least at mRNA level and its expression is augmented in some cancer cell lines. Notes: Abstract 201Tl myocardial imaging can, noninvasively, visualize the various cardiac structures; such as the left ventricle, right ventricle and, occasionally, the atrium. We have noted that certain patients exhibit a prominent appearance of the papillary muscle on a scintigram. Thus, we analyzed 201Tl myocardial scintigrams for evidence of activity which corresponded to the anterolateral (A-PM) and posteromedial (P-PM) papillary muscles. Twenty normal subjects, 81 patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD), 11 with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and 13 with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) were examined. Patients with DCM had rest imaging only, while the remaining ones performed exercise studies. The prevalence of a positive A-PM image was not high (9%–23%) and there was no significant difference among groups. The P-PM was seen in only 15% of the normal group and in 18% of the HCM group, while the prevalence was high in the IHD (34.6%) and DCM (53.8%) groups. In the IHD, the positive images of the P-PM were largely from the subgroup with single vessel left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery disease (78.9%). However, even in the presence of a defect in the left ventricular wall supplied by the LAD coronary artery, the patients with multi-vessel coronary artery disease did not tend to disclose the P-PM on the scinti-gram (30.8%). Thus, we conclude that positive P-PM imaging on a planar 201Tl myocardial scintigram is frequently observed under some cardiac states and seems to be related to reduced wall motion, sound blood supply to the P-PM and the existence of a defect in the anterior left ventricular wall overlapping the P-PM. When we analyze the planar 201Tl myocardial scintigram, not only the left and right ventricles, but also the PM should be assessed.

Notes: Abstract: A 74-year-old Japanese woman with early gastric cancer was successfully treated with uracil and tegafur (UFT). She was diagnosed by endoscopy (including endoscopic biopsy and endosonography) with an early gastric cancer, type IIa + IIc, on the greater curvature of the angulus. Surgical procedures or endoscopic therapy could not be performed because the patient had severe ischemic heart disease. Therefore, chemotherapy with UFT was administered at 300 mg/day for 15 months. Follow-up endoscopy, endosonography, and biopsy showed disappearance of the gastric cancer. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of the complete response of an early gastric cancer to UFT in the English-language literature.

Notes: Abstract: We recently cloned a prostacyclin (PGl2)-stimulating factor (PSF), which stimulates PGl2 production by cultured vascular endothelial cells. Immunohistochemistry and Northern blot analysis demonstrated that PSF was highly expressed in colon cancer sites compared with normal colon mucosa obtained from the same patient, as well as in cultured adenocarcinoma cell lines compared with cultured normal colon mucosal cell lines. Increased levels of the PSF protein were detected in the culture media of these adenocarcinoma cells compared with levels in the culture media of normal mucosal cells. These results suggest that PSF is closely associated with carcinogenesis of colon mucosa.
