    Notes: The release of amino acids and the hydrolysis of inositol phospholipids were examined in parallel in three hippocampal areas following classical conditioning. Paired or unpaired tone(CS) - shock(US) presentations were given to animals engaged in a previously acquired food-motivated lever-pressing task. Conditioned suppression of lever-pressing was the behavioural measure of conditioning. Twenty-four hours after the last conditioning session, the dentate gyrus and areas CA3 and CA1 of the hippocampus were removed bilaterally from conditioned and pseudoconditioned animals, and slices cut and stored in liquid nitrogen for subsequent analysis. Crude synaptosomal pellets were prepared to investigate: (i) potassium-stimulated release of preloaded [3H]glutamate and [14C]aspartate in the presence and absence of extracellular Ca2+; (ii) [3H]inositol labelling of phosphoinositides and inositol phosphates; and (iii) [14C]arachidonic acid labelling of 1,2-diacylglycerol (1,2-DG). Potassium-stimulated, Ca2+-dependent release of [3H]glutamate in synaptosomes prepared from the dentate gyrus and area CA3 was significantly greater in conditioned animals than in pseudoconditioned animals. In area CA1, K+-stimulated, Ca2+-dependent release of [14C]aspartate was significantly increased in conditioned animals. These results confirm in synaptosomes, and extend to a period of 24 h our previous report of an increased release of transmitter in the dentate gyrus and hippocampus associated with classical conditioning. In parallel with the increased release of amino acids, learning was associated with a significant increase in labelling of phosphoinositides and inositol phosphates by [3H]inositol and a significant increase in labelling of 1,2-DG by [14C]arachidonic acid in the three hippocampal areas examined. It is suggested that a long-lasting presynaptic activation of inositol lipid metabolism may contribute to the learning-dependent increase in the capacity of hippocampal terminals to release transmitter and hence to the maintenance of a neurochemical trace which may, at least in part, underlie lasting changes in synaptic function built up during associative learning.

    Notes: Abstract  The latest trends in the paper industry have been towards manufacturing by a neutral or alkaline process, greater consumption of secondary fibres and the closing-up of the process water systems. Under these conditions of papermaking, the problems of deposits, corrosion and odours due to the microbiological activity increase considerably and therefore, runnability and production problems occur. To help our understanding of the current situation in the paper industry, this paper presents a review of the microorganism sources, the consequences of the microbiological activity upon the actual systems of manufacturing paper and board, and the current state of the different alternatives for its prevention and control, as well as the future trends to address environmental considerations.

    Notes: Summary The authors report on pollution measures in some operating theatres and consider biological data for the hepatic and hemopoietic functions in operating room personnel and in control groups. Waste gas concentrations range from 17.3 to 22.6 ppm for enfluorane and from 500 to 1275 for N2O in theatres not equipped with antipollution systems. Pollution is 3–8 times lower when a scavening system is present, while with horizontal laminar air flow exhaust in function, the gas concentration in the air is insignificant. Tests for the hepatic and hematological functions, done on 61 operating room personnel, 87 ward nurses, and 69 technicians and physicians of radiology services, do not show any significant difference between those exposed to anesthetic gases and controls.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of the specific inhalation challenge test (SIC) in 160 subjects with suspected baker's asthma and to assess its relation to total flour dust levels and to personal characteristics such as specific skin sensitisation, non-specific bronchial hyper-responsiveness (NSBH) and atopy. Methods: We investigated the outcome of SIC tests performed with wheat flour in six Italian laboratories. For each subject, data was available regarding skin sensitisation to wheat flour, NSBH, atopy, forced expiratory volume at 1 s (FEV1) monitoring and airborne flour dust in the challenge chamber measured by the gravimetric method (total dust in mg/m3). Results: The SIC test was positive for early asthma in 42 subjects (26%) and for late/dual asthma in 18 (11%). Positive outcome to SIC was significantly associated with NBSH (odds ratio, OR: 3.5, 95% CI: 1.6–7.7) and skin sensitisation to wheat flour (OR: 3.1, 95% CI: 1.3–7.0). Exposure level to wheat flour was less than or equal to 10 mg/m3 in 12% of individuals, ranged between 11 and 30 mg/m3 in 43% and exceeded 30 mg/m3 in 45%. The outcome of SIC was always negative among workers not skin sensitised to wheat flour and without NSBH and atopy. An increasing prevalence of positive SIC was observed among workers with one or more of the above-mentioned personal characteristics whose challenge exposure was greater than 10 mg/m3 (P 〈 0.001). Conclusion: Procedures currently adopted for wheat flour dust exposure during SIC need to be better standardised in order to avoid excessive airborne dust exposure. Over-exposure seems to be of no use for the diagnosis and risks making the asthmatic reaction worse, particularly in patients who are both sensitised to wheat allergens and have NSBH and/or atopy.
