Notes: The results of Mössbauer investigations of the viscous magnetic liquids at temperatures of 100–300 K are discussed. The investigated ferrofluids were the colloidal dispersions of magnetite particles with average diameters of 7.5 and 10 nm in silicone carrier fluid. Supposing that the intensity of the Mössbauer line is determined by the factor f=f′⋅f″ (f′ is Mössbauer factor for magnetite powder; f″ is a similar factor depending on oscillations of particles in a liquid), we estimated the values of the factor f″(T) at various temperatures. To describe the dependence f′(T), the Debye approximation was used. By means of the data on the dependence f″(T) the estimations of frequencies of particles oscillations Ω and "elasticity modulus" E of the investigated substances were obtained. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Photoluminescence of GaN layers grown on 6H–SiC substrates was studied in the temperature range 77–900 K. GaN layers were grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The temperature dependence of the band gap of GaN was measured throughout the entire temperature range. Edge cavity stimulated emission from photopumped GaN layers was observed in the temperature range 77–450 K. The full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the stimulated emission peak was ∼3 nm at 300 K and ∼7 nm at 450 K. Multipass stimulated emission with Fabry–Pérot modes was detected from GaN. The FWHM of Fabry–Pérot modes was ∼0.2 nm (300 K). © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Measurements were made of the deformation and fracture characteristics of nanocrystalline copper and nickel at temperatures between 4.2 and 300 K. It was observed that the flow stresses are sensitive to the sign of the load while deformation instability was observed at temperatures close to liquid-helium temperature. The temperature dependence of the yield stress was obtained. It was found that there is a range of a thermal deformation at low temperatures which extends to 60 K for nickel and 200 K for copper. Possible reasons for these characteristics in the deformation behavior of nanocrystalline materials are discussed, especially the role of quantum effects in the low-temperature deformation.

Notes: Abstract The influence of ZrO2 particles on the low-temperature deformation of nanocrystalline copper produced by strong plastic deformation is investigated using equichannel angular pressing. A comparison is made between the deformation characteristics in tension and compression in the temperature range 4.2–400 K, measured for copper and the composite Cu:0.3 vol. % ZrO2. It is shown that within 4.2–200 K the yield point σ sm of the composite is higher than that for copper, attaining 680 MPa at 4.2 K, then the yield points are close in value up to room temperature, and diverge again as the temperature is raised. Possible causes of the dissimilar influence of an impurity on the strength and plasticity characteristics of nanocrystalline copper in various temperature intervals are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The rate spectrum of small inelastic strains of the C60 single crystal in the temperature range 80–300 K has been obtained with a precision laser interferometer. It is revealed that the spectrum exhibits two large peaks in the glass formation (90–100 K) and phase transition (250–260 K) ranges. A small strain acceleration is also observed at ∼220 and 240 K. The first two maxima are attributed to the changes in strain resistance upon transitions, and the strain acceleration at 220 and 240 K is associated with the annealing of the defects formed upon rapid cooling of the crystal. It is demonstrated that the peak at 250–260 K broadens with an increase in the stress. The spectrum of strain rates is compared with the calorimetric curve for the same single crystal.

Notes: Abstract A study has been performed of the crystalline structure and optical characteristics of single crystals of gallium nitride (GaN). The crystals were grown from a gallium-based flux. X-ray structural analysis showed that the crystals have wurzite structure 2H-GaN. From their luminescence characteristics and optical absorption spectra the crystals are similar to 2H-GaN epitaxial layers described in the literature.

Notes: Abstract The dislocation structure of strained single crystals of Ni3Ge with various orientations is investigated by electron microscopy. The evolution of the dislocation structure parameters is studied as a function of the degree of strain, temperature, and orientation of the single crystals. Analysis of the experimental dependences of the yield stress on the density of dislocations leads to certain conclusions about how various mechanisms for dislocation drag make temperature-dependent contributions to the deforming stress, and about the nature of the thermal hardening of Ni3Ge.

Notes: Abstract The instability of plastic deformation during the extension and compression of aluminum and during the extension of titanium and stainless steel is studied, and the temperature-rate region for the existence of deformation instability is determined. The form of the jumps in the flow stresses and their relationship to the macroscopic localization of strain and to fracture of the sample are also investigated. The role of the localization of microstrain and of fracture in the macroscopic manifestations of strain inhomogeneity is discussed.

Notes: Abstract An analysis is made of the influence of impurity content and of the sign and variation of the load on the stress-strain curves of aluminum at liquid helium temperatures. It is shown that the deformation instability, observed as jumps in the diagrams, depends on all these factors. When the sign of the load is reversed, the amplitude of the deformation jumps increases, which leads to the appearance of macrocracks, even under compression. The temperature-strain rate region of unstable deformation was determined for the alloy D16T.

Notes: Abstract Magnetite nanoparticles with an average particle size of 7.5 nm were studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy in the 100–300 K temperature range. Using experimental data on the temperature variation of isomer shifts in the partial spectra of 57Fe nuclei in the A and B crystal sublattices, the linear thermal expansion coefficient of the ultradisperse magnetite particles in the temperature range studied was estimated within the framework of the molecular orbital formalism: α=(1.2±0.2)×10−4K−1.
