    Notes: Abstract An experimental study is reported of the influence of temperature (T), electric field polarity (±E), as well as of changes in the electrode/insulator/superconductor (E/I/S) measuring system on the field effect in the ceramic (BiPb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox. It has been established that at 77 K and for E⩾60 MV/m the critical current I c and conductivity of the sample increase for I〉I c, irrespective of the field polarity. For lower fields and a negative electrode potential the conductivity in an electric field may decrease. The field effect decreases with increasing temperature, to practically vanish near T c where the sample is still in superconducting state. Experiments carried out with more complex systems E/I/M/I/S and E/I/M/S (M stands for a metallic foil) support the conclusion that it is the external electric field that is responsible for the observed effects.

    Notes: Abstract Precision measurements of the creep rate using interferometric recording of the process in LiF crystals containing 0.002 to 0.03 wt % Mg using interferometric recording of the process show that nonmonotonic episodes in the form of alternating segments with relatively high and low creep rates periodically appear against a background of overall creep attenuation. The accumulation of creep strain takes place mostly on the segments with increased rates, which causes kinks to appear in the creep curve that are noticeable when shifts are resolved at a level of fractional microns. Measurements were made of the height of steps L based on “rate-strain increment” curves for stresses smaller and closer to the yield point. Increasing the stresses causes the value of L to fall off, while increasing the Mg content causes it to increase. It is proposed that the nonmonotonic behavior of creep is connected with structural nonuniformity of the material, which is determined by the impurity content and the nonuniformity of the strain process itself. For small strains in the neighborhood of the yielding area, where strain comes about as a result of a broadening of a pre-existing slip band, the impurity atoms enhance the nonuniformity of the strain (L increases). As the strain (stress) increases, L decreases, which corresponds to a smoothing out of the nonuniformities. It is emphasized that the step-like character of the strain accumulation is a general property.

    Notes: Abstract The dislocation structure of strained single crystals of Ni3Ge with various orientations is investigated by electron microscopy. The evolution of the dislocation structure parameters is studied as a function of the degree of strain, temperature, and orientation of the single crystals. Analysis of the experimental dependences of the yield stress on the density of dislocations leads to certain conclusions about how various mechanisms for dislocation drag make temperature-dependent contributions to the deforming stress, and about the nature of the thermal hardening of Ni3Ge.

    Notes: Abstract An experimental study is reported of the effect of an electric field E⩽120 MV/m and of temperature T on the critical current I c and I-V characteristics of yttrium-based high-T c superconducting ceramics. The materials studied were copper-deficient ceramics, YBa2Cu3−x Oy (D samples), and YBa2Cu3−x Oy/Agx ceramics [S samples with silver present in amounts equal to the copper deficiency (0⩽x⩽0.4)]. It has been established that in D samples at 77 K, the electric field increases I c and reduces substantially R for I〉I c, whereas in S samples no field effect is observed. Measurements of the I c(T) dependence near the critical temperature showed that they can be described for all samples by a relation of the type I c =const(1−T/T c )α, where α≈1 for the D samples, and α≈2 for the S samples. The results obtained suggest that the electric-field effect correlates with the existence in the ceramic of SIS-type weak links at grain boundaries.

    Notes: Abstract The mechanical properties and the dislocation structure of Ni3Ge alloy single crystals have been experimentally studied at low temperatures. It is found that the flow stresses increase beginning with 4.2 K, and the observed rise in the stresses depends on the orientation of the strain axes of the crystals. The dislocation structure is investigated thoroughly. It is revealed that the mean density of dislocations and the interdislocation interaction parameter α anomalously increase as the temperature increases in the range 4.2–293 K. The mechanisms providing an explanation for the temperature anomaly of flow stresses and the α parameter are considered. The activation energy of thermal hardening is evaluated. It is assumed that the low activation energies of thermal hardening are due to the motion of dislocations at velocities close to the velocity of sound at these temperatures.

    Notes: Abstract A thermodynamic transition in C60 crystals, subjected beforehand to uniaxial compression at various temperatures and to thermal action, was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. It was established that compression of the crystal at temperatures below the phase transition has a much smaller effect on the transition itself than a similar or even much weaker action at a temperature above the phase transition. A “quenching” effect was also found. This effect is probably due to the orientational order of individual fullerene molecules. A correlation was established between the magnitude of the effect and the preliminary deformation of C60 crystals.

    Notes: Abstract The strain characteristics of nanocrystalline niobium are measured in the temperature range 4.2–300 K. It is shown that the development of a strong local deformation with clearly delineated macroscopic slip bands occurs at 4.2 K and 10 K. The thermal effects at a stress jump observed upon transition of the sample (or a niobium strip placed close to the sample) from the superconducting state to the normal state are estimated. It is demonstrated that the temperature dependence of the yield point σs(T) can be divided into three portions: two portions (T〈10 K and T〉70 K) with a slight change in σs and the third portion with a strong dependence σs(T). The strain characteristics of polycrystals with nano-and larger-sized grains are compared with those of single crystals.

    Notes: Abstract The thermodynamic transition in the C60 crystals subjected to uniaxial compression at different temperatures and heat treatment has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The kinetic parameters of the irreversible endothermic “quenching” effect are determined. It is revealed that the process is accompanied by the cooperative molecular motion, which is characteristic of the high-elasticity state of organic glasses.

    Notes: Abstract The temperature spectrum of small-inelastic-strain rates in a vapor-phase-grown C60 single crystal has been measured within the 200–290 K interval with a high-precision strain-rate meter based on a laser interferometer. The spectrum exhibits a strong peak in the region of the phase transition at 250–260 K and a slight strain acceleration at ∼240 K, which correlates well with the calorimetric curve. The first maximum is associated with strain that developes more easily in an fcc than in a primitive cubic lattice, and the second, to the effect on the strain rate of annealing of the defects created with fast crystal heating.

    Notes: Abstract A comparative study of the thermodynamic properties of the C70 fullerene, sulfur, and C70S48 crystals has been made by differential scanning calorimetry. It is shown that only C70S48 has an endothermic δ phase transition with a peak at 430 K, which lies in the temperature region exhibiting conductivity and dielectric anomalies. A correlation between the behavior of the sulfur sublattice in the C70S48 crystals and the thermodynamic parameters of the transition has been established.
