Notes: Growth of ferroelectric Bi2WO6 (BWO) mono-domain bulk crystals was attempted by thevertical-Bridgman (VB) method below the phase transition (ferro- to paraelectric) temperature of940oC using Li2B4O7 as a flux. In this method, Pt crucibles with different shapes were used. Thecrucible with a wedged tip bottom produced BWO crystal with a thickness of over 4 mm along thecrystallographic c-axis (perpendicular to the spontaneous polarization axis). Using BWOmono-domain crystals grown by slow cooling technique, on the other hand, their electric propertieswere characterized. The dielectric constants, εij, and electromechanical coupling factor, k33, of thecrystals were 70-100 and 36% at room temperature, respectively

Notes: (Ba,Sr)TiO3 (BST) thin films have been investigated because of significant interest in deviceapplications of their nonlinear dielectric properties such as in frequency tunable devices. We haveinvestigated frequency conversion devices using BST films as new nonlinear devices, such asfrequency mixers and multipliers. In this paper, we report the evaluation of nonlinear properties ofvarious capacitors, and the experimental equation of the properties and the equivalent circuit modelfor frequency converters were established. A frequency multiplier using the BST film capacitor wasfabricated, and obvious third harmonic signals could be observed. A conversion efficiency of -20dB was obtained with a low input power of 0.25 W. Analysis of the converter with an equivalentcircuit was also carried out, and the calculated output voltage agreed well with the measured result. The model is expected to be used for the analysis and improvement of conversion devices

Notes: The (Ba0.6Sr0.4)TiO3 (BST) thin films were formed on a Pt bottom electrode/glazed-Al2O3 substratesby a chemical solution deposition (CSD) method. The BST films were annealed at temperaturesbetween 600 and 800ºC in a rapid thermal annealing (RTA) process and grown at each temperaturewith a random orientation. The grain size of the BST films enlarged and the electrical properties ofthe BST films improved as the annealing temperature rose. The grain size of the film annealed at800ºC enlarged to be 80 nm. The averaged surface roughness Ra was 2.927 nm, which resulted in afavorable degree of planarity. The dielectric constant and loss tangent of the film at 1 MHz were403 and 0.049, respectively. The film also displayed a high degree of tunability, which was 58.3%(at 429 kV/cm). These results indicated that high-quality BST thin films could be formed on anextremely cheap glazed-Al2O3 substrates

Notes: We report an effective substitution of aluminum for gallium in langasite-type La3Ta0.5Ga5.5O14(LTG) crystals for use in a pressure sensor at high temperature. Al-substituted LTG(La3Ta0.5Ga5.5-xAlxO14; LTGAx) single crystals up to the solubility limit of x=0.5 have been grownby the conventional Czochralski technique. The electric properties of the LTGAx crystals wereinvestigated and compared with those of LTG. By Al substitution, the piezoelectric constant d11 andthe electromechanical coupling factors (k12) became slightly larger. The LTGAx crystals showed alower temperature dependence of d11 and a higher electric resistivity ρ than those of the LTGcrystals

Notes: Summary Histogenetic similarities in the female geninal system suggest that a group of cancers from the coelomic epithelium may have a common sensitivity to cytotoxic treatment. A total of 24 patients with evaluable gynecologic cancer were treated with a new combination regimen consisting of cisplatin (50 mg/m2), Adriamycin (50 mg/m2), and ifosfamide (1 g/m2×5days) (PAI) given in five courses at 4-week intervals. The tumors included ten cervical, four endometrial, seven ovarian, and three peritoneal cancers. In all, 20 of our patients had recurrent disease and had previously received other cytotoxic treatment, including radiation (11 cases), cisplatin-containing chemotherapy (8 cases), or both (1 case). As a schedule modification, PAI plus bleomycin (20 mg/m2, on days 1 and 8) was recommended for tumors containing squamous components. According to the response criteria of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), a 96% response rate was obtained (cervical, 9/10; endometrial, 4/4; ovarian, 7/7; peritoneal, 3/3). Of 23 responders 8 (35%) achieved a complete remission. The dose-limiting side effect of the PAI regimen was hematologic toxicity: grade 4 leukopenia was observed in 92% of patients, and grade 4 thrombocytopenia was seen in 175. However, the myelosuppresion reversed spontaneously within 3 weeks, and none of the patients was incapable of completing the planned treatment courses. The results sugest that PAI combination chemotherapy is effective and can be used in the management of patients with gynecologic malignancies derived from the coelomic epithelium (müllerian tumor group).

Notes: Abstract The molecular basis of T-cell-mediated recognition of ovarian cancer cells remains to be fully addressed. In this study we investigated HLA class I restriction and directed antigens of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) at the sites of ovarian cancer. Three HLA-class-I-restricted CTL lines were established from the tumor sites of ovarian cancer by culturing tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes or tumor-associated ascitic lymphocytes with interleukin-2: (1) HLA-A2402-restricted and ovarian-adenocarcinoma-specific CTL, (2) HLA-A2-restricted CTL recognizing histologically different cancers, and (3) HLA-B52-restricted and ovarian-cancer-specific CTL. HLA-A0201, HLA-A0206 and HLA-A0207 tumor cells were lysed by the HLA-A2-restricted CTL. HLA-B52 restriction of the third CTL line was confirmed by the transfection of HLA-B5201 cDNA into the tumor cells. The HLA-A2-restricted CTL recognized the SART-1, but not the MAGE-1 or MAGE-3 antigen. These results may facilitate a better understanding of the molecular basis of tumor-specific immunity at the tumor site of ovarian cancer.

Notes: Abstract Although selective posterior rhizotomy (SPR) was pioneered as early as 1913, only over the past decade has the procedure gained popular use for the treatment of spasticity in cerebral palsy. The medical knowledge base regarding this procedure is expanding, and surgical techniques continue to be revised. We present our 7 years of experience in treating spastic cerebral palsy using SPR. The aspects of preoperative evaluation used by the multidisciplinary team to determine candidacy are outlined. The surgical procedure is detailed with a particular emphasis on the role of intraoperative nerve root stimulation to aid in selection for rootlet sectioning. Historical nerve stimulation protocols are reviewed and compared to our findings over the years. The functional goals are discussed in the context of the postoperative evaluation and therapies. Specific outcome in relation to joint range of motion, self care tasks, and ambulation is reported. The paper outlines a concise overview of our experiences and will assist the clinician in defining a protocol and expectations for SPR.

Notes: Abstract Expression of the laccase gene (lacc) of Neurospora crassa is transcriptionally inducible by the protein synthesis inhibitor cycloheximide. A lni-1 mutation, conferring the laccase non-inducible phenotype, was found to be a cpc-1 allele. Northern blots probed with plasmid pLAI, which carries the lacc gene revealed that the cpc-1 mutation abolishes the induced transcription of the lacc gene, indicating requirement of the cpc-1 gene for transcriptional activation of the lacc gene. In Northern blots probed with plasmid pABI, which bears arg-2 a gene whose transcription is under the control of CPC1, the level of the arg-2 transcript was shown to increase several-fold in wild-type mycelia but remained low in cpc-1 mycelia, after treatment with cycloheximide. This suggests that inhibition of protein synthesis with cycloheximide, as well as amino acid limitation, elicits the CPC1-mediated cross-pathway control. Characterization of the lacc upstream region using a series of 5′-deletion plasmids led to the identification of a 170 bp DNA region required for the induced lacc expression. Sequence analysis of this DNA region demonstrated that it includes a 9 by sequence with dyad symmetry, ATGAATCAT which differs only by a central base pair from ATGA(C/G)TCAT the recognition sequence characteristic of CPC1 and GCN4 binding sites. Possible mechanisms by which CPC1 mediates transcriptional activation of the lacc gene are discussed.

Notes: Abstract In order to clarify the mechanism of food-antigen recognition, the proliferative responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to native, heat-denatured or pepsin-treated ovalbumin (OA) were investigated in 16 hen's egg-sensitive patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). Seven of them had hypersensitivity to boiled hen's egg and others had not. The responses of PBMCs to heat-denatured OA were lower than those to native OA in the patients without hypersensitivity to boiled hen's egg. However, there were no differences of the responses of PBMCs between heat-denatured OA and native OA in the patients with hypersensitivity to boiled hen's egg. Moreover, the reduction of the responses of PBMCs to pepsin-treated OA was recognized in six out of seven patients. The primary structure of OA did not change by heating or pepsin treatment according to sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). These results suggested that the secondary structure of OA changed in connection with the reduction of the responses of PBMCs to denatured OA. In addition, we demonstrated the suppressive effect of anti-HLA-DR and anti-HLA-DQ monoclonal antibodies on the proliferative response of PBMCs to OA. The results suggested that the proliferative responses of PBMCs to OA were restricted by HLA-DR or HLA-DQ in hen's egg-sensitive patients with AD.

Notes: Abstract Scores of radio allergosorbent test (BAST) for cow's milk or buckwheat flour and proliferative responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to bovine serum albumin andβ-lactoglobulin or buckwheat flour were measured in cow's milk or buckwheat flour sensitive patients with allergic tension-fatigue syndrome. In all 3 cow's milk sensitive patients with allergic tension-fatigue syndrome, RAST scores for cow's milk were negative or slightly positive, but PBMCs well responded to bovine serum albumin andβ-lactoglobulin, but not to ovalbumin. In a buckwheat flour sensitive patient with allergic tension-fatigue syndrome, RAST scores for buckwheat flour were negative, but PBMCs well responded to buckwheat flour, but not to ovalbumin, bovine serum albumin andβ-lactoglobulin. Conversely, in cow's milk or buckwheat flour sensitive patients with immediate allergic symptoms, RAST scores for offending foods were positive although PBMCs did not respond to offending food antigens. These results suggest that proliferative responses of PBMCs to food antigens are very useful for detection of offending foods in allergic tension-fatigue syndrome.
