Notes: 131 I]-iodomethyl-norcholesterol ([131I]-Adosterol) demonstrated clear activity in the omentum, weak activity in the rectus muscles, and no activity in the adrenal beds. These findings suggest that the omentum may be more suitable as an implantation site for adrenal tissue than muscular pockets.

Notes: Abstract Bilateral total adrenalectomy results in the need for patients to take lifelong supplements of adrenal steroids, with the risk of possible Addisionian crisis. Few reports of the successful autotransplantation of adrenal tissue in muscular pockets have been documented; however, we describe herein the case of a 22-year-old woman in whom autotransplantation of an adrenal gland was successfully performed employing a new method of omental wrapping. The patient underwent bilateral total adrenalectomy for bilateral pheochromocytoma at which time adrenal tissue was sliced into 1–2-mm thick pieces, half of which were placed in muscular pockets in the abdominal rectus muscles, and the remaining half put onto the omentum and wrapped with it. Laboratory examinations done 6 months after surgery showed recovery of her adrenal function, and 4 months later steroid supplements were able to be discontinued. Scintigraphic studies using [131I]-iodomethylnorcholesterol ([131I]-Adosterol) demonstrated clear activity in the omentum, weak activity in the rectus muscles, and no activity in the adrenal beds. These findings suggest that the omentum may be more suitable as an implantation site for adrenal tissue than muscular pockets.

Notes: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between technetium-99m hexakis-2-methoxyisobutylisonitrile (99mTc-MIBI) accumulation in tumours and response to radiotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer patients in comparison with the findings obtained using thallium-201 chloride (201Tl).Simultaneous dual single-photon emission tomography (SPET) imaging with 600 MBq 99mTc-MIBI and 111 MBq 201Tl was performed in 31 patients with biopsy- or sputum cytology-proven lung cancer. SPET images were acquired 15 min (early) and 2 h (delayed) after injection, and the early ratio, delayed ratio and retention index were measured. The tumours were classified into two groups on the basis of follow-up computed tomography (CT): responders (at least 50% reduction in tumour size) and non-responders (little or no change in tumour size). The mean (± SD) values of early ratio, delayed ratio and retention index using 99mTc-MIBI SPET were 3.0±1.1, 2.7±1.0 and –9.5±12.7, respectively, in responders and 2.4±0.7, 2.0±0.5 and –18.4±9.0, respectively, in non-responders. The corresponding values using 201Tl chloride SPET were 3.7±1.0, 4.7±1.5 and 24.2±22.1 in responders and 3.3±1.2, 4.0±1.3 and 20.4±20.5 in non-responders. Using 99mTc-MIBI, the delayed ratio and retention index in responders were significantly higher than those in non-responders (P〈0.01 and P〈0.05, respectively). The results of this study indicate that patients with higher delayed ratio and retention index values using 99mTc-MIBI SPET are likely to respond better to radiotherapy than those with lower values. 99mTc-MIBI SPET may give an indication of the short-term response to radiotherapy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

Notes: Abstract: Chiral order of the Josephson-junction ladder with half a flux quantum per plaquette is studied by means of the exact diagonalization method. We consider an extreme quantum limit where each superconductor grain (order parameter) is represented by S=1/2 spin. So far, the semi-classical case, where each spin reduces to a plane rotator, has been considered extensively. We found that in the case of S=1/2, owing to the strong quantum fluctuations, the chiral (vortex lattice) order becomes dissolved except in a region, where attractive intrachain and, to our surprise, repulsive interchain interactions both exist. On the contrary, for considerably wide range of parameters, the superconductor (XY) order is kept critical. The present results are regarded as a demonstration of the critical phase accompanying chiral-symmetry breaking predicted for frustrated XXZ chain field-theoretically.

Notes: Heterogeneous or homogeneous polyelectrolyte influences on the solvolyses of t-butyl chloride and α-phenethyl chloride were studied. Anionic polymers enhanced the reaction rate by stabilizing the intermediate point dipole (ionic strength effect); cationic polymers with chloride ions as gegenions retarded the reaction by the mass action law (common ion salt effect), thus supporting the theory of Ingold et al. On the other hand, neutral polymer resins retarded the reaction probably because of the binding of the substrate on the resin surface. By the addition of a neutral polymer resin. Amberlite XAD-4 the net steric course of the solvolysis of α-phenethyl chloride was slightly changed from inversion to racernization, whereas anionic resins (Amberlite IR-124) showed no effect. The heterogeneous polymer resin effect on the dearnination of α-phenethyl amine was also studied. An anionic resin (IR-124) retarded the reaction slightly and a neutrai resin (XAD-4) retarded it to a great extent. A cationic resin (Dowex 1 × 8) accelerated the reaction, although slightly. The net steric course of the deamination was changed from inversion to racemization in the order XAD-4 〉 Dowex 1 × 8 〉 IR 124. The heterogeneous polymer effect of the stereochemistry depended mainly on the hydrophobicity: i.e., the ability to bind the substrate on the surface of resin.
