    Notes: Abstract A modified version of the classical coagulation theory in the diffusion approximation is used to study some anomalies in the behavior of the particle size distribution function. It is established that unlike a normal aerosol, in a dusty plasma the dispersion of the distribution and the average particle size may decrease with time.

    Notes: Abstract Elementary processes in dusty, beam-driven plasma discharges are studied experimentally and theoretically for the first time. A theoretical model is constructed for a beam-driven plasma containing macroscopic particles. The effect of macroscopic particles on the electron energy distribution function is estimated assuming a Coulomb field for the particles. The resulting rate of electron-ion recombination on the macroscopic particles is compared with the electron loss constant calculated from the electron energy distribution function with an electron absorption constant in the orbital-motion approximation. This approximation, which is valid in the collisionless case, is found to work satisfactorily beyond its range of applicability. The distributions of the charged particles and electric fields created by macroscopic particles in a helium plasma are determined. The experimental data demonstrate the importance of secondary emission by high-energy electrons.

    Notes: Abstract An investigation is made of characteristic features in the behavior of small particles in a dusty plasma attributable partly to the suppression of coagulation as a result of monopolar charging for particle sizes smaller than the Debye shielding length and partly to the reduction in the effect of charging for larger particles. Similarity relations linking the plasma composition and particle charge with the parameters of the dust component are used to determine the range of parameters for which the linear approximation of the particle charge as a function of their sizes holds. A modified classical theory of coagulation in the diffusion approximation is used to study some anomalies in the behavior of the particle size distribution. It is established that unlike an ordinary aerosol, in a dusty plasma the dispersion of the distribution and the average particle size may decrease with time. It is shown for the first time that a long-lived “quasi-liquid” state of a dusty plasma may be established as a result of the anomalous behavior of the size distribution function of coagulating charged particles.

    Notes: Abstract An experimental and numerical investigation is conducted of the evolution of perturbations, which are excited in a non-self-sustaining discharge, which is controlled by an electron beam at pressures close to atmospheric in various gases and gas mixtures. The perturbations were generated by the discharge itself or with the aid of a specifically introduced external source. As a result, spatially inhomogeneous structures arise, which are oriented along or transverse to the electric field and which degrade the optical properties of the active medium created by the discharge.
