Notizen: It is shown that quantum effects in dense gases and nonideal plasmas lead to nonexponential tails in the distribution function of electron momenta. This in turn is responsible for nonexponential temperature dependence of ionization and excitation rates in thermal equilibrium. These changes are predicted to be more pronounced than those due to lowering of the ionization potential. Consistent description of this phenomenon relies upon the evolution of the generalized electron distribution function, which depends both on energy and momentum. A kinetic equation for this function in a strong electric field is derived. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract A modified version of the classical coagulation theory in the diffusion approximation is used to study some anomalies in the behavior of the particle size distribution function. It is established that unlike a normal aerosol, in a dusty plasma the dispersion of the distribution and the average particle size may decrease with time.

Notizen: Abstract The optical absorption spectra of high-density (1016–1019 cm−3) sodium vapors were studied in a broad spectral range (0.35–1.1 μm). The intensity of thermal radiation from sodium vapors was measured in the 2–3 μm wavelength interval. It is established that the effect of metal clusters can account neither for the observed structure of absorption spectra nor for the increased intensity of emission in the near-IR range reported in some works (in particular, for the emission spectra of high-pressure gas-discharge sodium lamps).

Notizen: Abstract It is shown that in a dense, not very hot, multiply charged plasma the satellite structures of resonance lines can become more intense than the resonance lines themselves. Experimental and theoretical investigations show that the conditions under which the satellite structures dominate in the emission spectrum of the plasma are quite easily realized experimentally and, furthermore, apparently they will be the most typical case in investigations of compressed plasma regions in inertial-confinement fusion experiments and in the study of plasma produced by high-contrast pico-and femtosecond laser pulses.

Notizen: Abstract An investigation is made of characteristic features in the behavior of small particles in a dusty plasma attributable partly to the suppression of coagulation as a result of monopolar charging for particle sizes smaller than the Debye shielding length and partly to the reduction in the effect of charging for larger particles. Similarity relations linking the plasma composition and particle charge with the parameters of the dust component are used to determine the range of parameters for which the linear approximation of the particle charge as a function of their sizes holds. A modified classical theory of coagulation in the diffusion approximation is used to study some anomalies in the behavior of the particle size distribution. It is established that unlike an ordinary aerosol, in a dusty plasma the dispersion of the distribution and the average particle size may decrease with time. It is shown for the first time that a long-lived “quasi-liquid” state of a dusty plasma may be established as a result of the anomalous behavior of the size distribution function of coagulating charged particles.

Notizen: Abstract The efficiency of conversion of the heat flux into hard x radiation (HXR) is analyzed, via time-dependent two-temperature one-dimensional non-LTE-radiation-hydrodynamic numerical modeling, for a heat-to-radiation flux converter linked to the edge of a low-atomic-number hot Z-pinch. The domain of parameters in this scheme is found where about the same HXR yield can be achieved at values of input energy which are an order of magnitude lower than in the conventional scheme of a radially imploding plasma.

Notizen: Abstract The evolution of the ion composition of a laser plasma during its expansion over a large distance is studied. The plasma is produced by a TIR CO2 laser with a pulse energy up to 100 J and duration of ∼20 ns. X-ray diagnostics with the use of a spectrograph and X-ray PIN diodes was applied to study the plasma near the target surface. At large distances from the target surface, time-of-flight neutral-particle diagnostics with the use of an electrostatic analyzer and ion collector was applied. Calculations performed with the GIDRA-1 code agree well with experimental data.

Notizen: Abstract The purely thermal visible and infrared radiation emitted by a dense resonant medium (sodium vapor) heated nonuniformly to temperatures of 600–1200 K was investigated experimentally for the first time under conditions where the photon mean free path is comparable with the emission wavelength. The profile of the recorded spectra and the absolute luminescence intensities in the different spectral ranges show good agreement with the results of a numerical simulation using a previously developed theory of resonance radiation transport which assumes a Boltzmann spectral distribution of the resonant level population proportional to exp(−ℏω/T). The self-reversed resonant sodium line exhibited strong asymmetry and it was shown that under certain conditions, the luminescence spectrum of the medium may exhibit an additional broad peak on the far “red” limb of the resonance line. Calculations and measurements demonstrated that the intensity of the thermal emission of sodium vapor at this red peak is several orders of magnitude higher than that obtained from the standard theory of resonance radiation transport. This effect is arbitrarily termed an infrared “ catastrophe.” It is noted that in a solar corona plasma and in gas-discharge lamps, the far red limbs of the resonant lines may make a substantial contribution to the total luminescence intensity and in some cases, considerably exceed the intensity of the photorecombination and bremsstrahlung continuum.

It is shown that the emission intensity in the 2–3 μm range at temperatures of 600–1200 K is several orders of magnitude higher than the intensity obtained from the standard theory of resonance radiation transfer. This phenomenon can be conventionally termed an “infrared catastrophe.” The form of the recorded spectra and the absolute intensity of the emission in both the infrared and visible regions of the spectrum are in agreement with the theory developed by Yu. L. Zemtsov and A. M. Starostin, Zh. Éksp. Teor. Fiz. 103, 345 (1993) [JETP 76, 186 (1993)], in which the Boltzmann spectral distribution of the population of the resonance level is proportional to exp(−ħω/T).

Notizen: Abstract An experimental investigation and numerical simulation of resonant laser breakdown are performed. As a result, quantitative agreement between the experimental data on the parameters of a dense resonant plasma (the electron density and the electron temperature) and the results of calculations in the range of detunings of the laser radiation from resonance Δλ〉2–2.5 nm, in which the spatial instability of the intense resonant laser beam and the absorption of radiation are minimal, is obtained for the first time. It is shown that the previously proposed mechanism of resonant breakdown associated with laser-induced associative ionization introduces only a small correction to the final extent of ionization of the resonant plasma and scarcely alters its temperature. The influence of quantum stimulated inverse bremsstrahlung processes, which are usually described as collisions of the second kind in the resonance case, on the energy gain by electrons is analyzed for the first time in reference to specific experimental findings. The numerical calculations show that at detunings of the order of the Rabi frequency, the mechanism by which electrons gain energy through the resonant system does not reduce to collisions of the second kind and can significantly increase the density of the resonant plasma. However, in this range of detunings the laser beam is still strongly perturbed by instability processes, precluding a proper comparison of the theory with experiment. At large Δλ the classical and quantum cases differ from one another only slightly, and the values of N e calculated for both mechanisms lie within the measurement error.
