    Notes: Electrostatically interacting colloidal suspensions at medium to very low salt concentrations were prepared in differently ordered phases using the method of continuous deionization. Equilibrium phase states include fluid, mono- and polycrystalline material as well as coexistence between fluid and monocrystal. A nonequilibrium supercooled fluid state is reproducibly reached by shear melting. In these phases the long time self-diffusion coefficient DL was measured by forced Rayleigh scattering, while the potential of interaction was systematically varied by changing salt concentration cs and volume fraction φ. In the equilibrium fluid DL decreases by roughly an order of magnitude as the interaction increases. This trend extends continuously into the supercooled state. In all cases crystallization is observed for DL/D0≤0.10(1). In the polycrystalline phases self-diffusion coefficients are still 1 to 2 orders of magnitude lower than in the supercooled state. Here self-diffusion increases with increasing interaction. For the monocrystalline case upper limits of DL are given. These data on the solid phases are discussed in terms of grain boundary and vacancy diffusion.

    Notes: We report on the shear modulus G of colloidal crystals formed from thoroughly deionized suspensions of charged latex spheres. G is measured as a function of particle number density n. Body- and face-centered-cubic (bcc and fcc) crystal structures are observed by simultaneously performed static light scattering, and a broad coexistence region is found between (2.7±0.1)×1018 m−3≤n≤(4.8±0.2)×1018 m−3. Below n=1019 m−3, G closely follows theoretical predictions for both bcc and fcc, while it stays constant throughout the transition region. Above n=1019 m−3, G still observes the predicted n-dependence but with values larger than expected. While in that region, an upper bound of particles per crystallite is estimated from scattering data to be on the order of 104; the abrupt change in G cannot be solely attributed to the gradual morphological transition from polycrystalline to nanocrystalline materials. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Light scattering as a function of scattering angle can be regarded as a standard method to investigate the dynamics of dilute colloidal suspensions. Concentrated suspensions, which are of interest if interactions between the particles are to be investigated, usually show strong multiple scattering. Decorrelation of multiple scattered light, which isolates single scattering events at the expense of a reduced signal-to-noise ratio, has been proven to work using the two-colour crosscorrelation scheme. In this contribution we demonstrate for the first time the suppression of multiple scattering of a concentrated colloidal suspension at different scattering angles using the 3D cross-correlation technique. Our set-up is designed to extend both measurements towards smallerq values and the scattering intensity of the samples under study beyond the limits of existing apparatus. The latter feature will enable us to approach the photon-diffusion regime as far as possible using decorrelation methods.

    Notes: Abstract We have investigated a colloidal suspension in a thin wedge formed by two glass plates in the presence of a lateral pressure. Starting with a single hexagonal layer, with increasing separation between the glass plates additional layers are added. This process is accompanied by a number of structural transitions necessary to maintain a high packing fraction under the given boundary conditions. Besides the well-known sequence of hexagonal and quadratic phases, we observe two new phases which are identified with the buckling and the rhombic phase recently predicted by other authors.
