Absolute rate constants of the collisional decay of I(5 2P1/2) by the halogen fluorides F2, ClF, and IF have been determined using the technique of time-resolved, laser-initiated infrared fluorescence, as well as atomic absorption spectroscopy (in the case of IF only). The room temperature rate constants, kF2〈8.7×10−14, kCIF=1.3±0.3×10−13, and kIF (∼400 K) =1.3±0.6×10−11 cm3 molecule−1 s−1, along with other reported quenching rate constants for the other halogen diatomics have been explained in terms of correlations based on the symmetry of the relevant potential energy surfaces.
