Notes: The motivation for this article has been to try to understand the relative phenomenological differences between the behavior of the films of the high-temperature superconductors like YBa2Cu3O7−δ deposited on (a) relatively insulating substrates (like LaAlO3) through sputtering technique and (b) highly metallic substrates (like stainless steel and inconel) through laser ablation method. It is observed that the most prominent Raman bands on LaAlO3 substrate falling near 337, 440, and 503 cm−1 have half widths (defined as the full width at half the maximum intensity) of 22, 42, and 38 cm−1, respectively. The half width gets nearly doubled on the metallic substrates. These results have been attributed to the metal-superconductor interfacial interactions. Further, infrared reflectance measurements and the Kramers–Kronig analysis of the spectra reveal a large difference in the conductivity of the film on LaAlO3 compared to the films on metallic substrates. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have studied the leakage current conduction mechanism of pulsed-laser-deposited SrBi2Nb2O9 (SBN) thin films on platinized silicon substrates. The time-dependent dc leakage current densities of SBN thin films do not follow Curie–von Schweidler power law. Instead the contribution of conduction current is predominantly electronic. At lower fields, the leakage current follows the ohmic behavior, and it increases exponentially for higher fields. The leakage current density of the SBN thin films was studied at elevated temperatures, and the data were fitted with the Schottky emission model. The effective Richardson's constant was calculated to be about 8.7×10−6 A/cm2 K2. The Schottky barrier height of the SBN thin films was estimated to be 1.37 eV. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Bismuth-layered ferroelectric thin films of Sr1−xAxBi2Ta2O9, with composition x=0 and 0.2, were fabricated by using the pulsed-laser deposition technique. Structural characterization of the films by x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy, revealed that the films are polycrystalline in nature with average grain size of 180 nm. The films displayed spherical grains with a surface roughness of 12 nm. The ferroelectric measurements of Sr0.8Ba0.2Bi2Ta2O9, SrBi2Ta2O9, and Sr0.8Ca0.2Bi2Ta2O9 showed saturated hysteretic behavior with remanent polarization (2Pr) of 23.5, 17.9, 14 μC/cm2 and coercive field (Ec) of 31.06, 74.2, 86.3 kV/cm for a maximum applied electric field of 360 kV/cm. Films exhibited minimal (≤17%) degradation of polarization for up to 1010 switching cycles. It was observed that the coercive field decreased with increase in the ionic size of partially substituted cations. The leakage current density of films were found to be of the order of ∼10−8 A/cm2 for up to a breakdown field of about 75 kV/cm. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: To test the hypothesis that isolates of Phytophthora infestans attacking wild Solanaceae exhibit specialization for particular host species, 115 isolates of P. infestans were collected from cultivated potatoes, nontuber-bearing Solanum spp. of the Basarthrum section and wild tomatoes from five departments in the northern and central highlands of Peru, and characterized using several neutral markers. All isolates belonged to one of four clonal lineages described previously in Peru: EC-1, US-1, PE-3 and PE-7. There was a strong association of three lineages with host species: PE-3 was only isolated from cultivated potato, while PE-7 and US-1 were only isolated from nontuber-bearing Solanum spp. (Basarthrum section and wild tomatoes). EC-1 was isolated from all host groups sampled. A subset (n = 74) of the isolates was evaluated for metalaxyl resistance. High levels of resistance were found almost exclusively in EC-1 and PE-3, while US-1 and PE-7 isolates were generally sensitive. In a detached-leaf assay for lesion diameter using five EC-1 isolates from S. caripense and seven EC-1 isolates from cultivated potato, there was a significant interaction between isolate origin and inoculated host, caused by higher aggressiveness of EC-1 from cultivated potato on its host of origin. In a comparison of EC-1 (seven isolates from cultivated potato) and US-1 (three isolates from S. caripense), each pathogen lineage was more aggressive on its original host species, causing a highly significant interaction between isolate origin and inoculated host. Wild tomatoes and nontuber-bearing Solanum spp. harbour several pathogen lineages in Peru and could serve as reservoirs of inoculum that might contribute to epidemics on potato or tomato. Potential risks associated with the use of wild Solanum hosts as sources of resistance to P. infestans are discussed.

Notes: Thirteen fresh equine heads were dissected in an attempt to determine the cause of a groove frequently found on the dorsal border and medial side of the nasal process of the incisive bone. This groove appeared on both sides in 40 out of 44 equine skulls. The sulcus seems to be caused by the combined action of the lateralis nasi muscle and the medial accessory cartilage of the nose (cartilago nasalis accessoria medialis). Other sulci found on the nasal process of the bone may be explained as impressions caused by nerves.

Notes: The anatomy of the rabbit is not well known and there is no consensus on the anatomical nomenclature for this species. The objective of this study was to give a complementary description of the peritoneal folds in order to improve the existing knowledge on this species. Eighteen adult rabbits were studied. Ten animals were dissected unfixed and the remaining eight after fixation in formalin. The hepatic ligaments were similar to those of the dog. The transverse mesocolon was absent. The entry to the caudal recess of the omental sac was relatively smaller than that in other domestic species. We consistently found an omental foramen. An amount of fat tissue was almost always found in the proximal mesorchium. The vaginal process was inconstant.
